I was listening to the show yesterday and was like " Is Sybill really that stupid?" The man from Barnes & Noble came on the show and explained what happened so why bash him the way he was? To me that was really ignorant! To argue about something as petty as this is beyond me and I know that there are many other fights worth fighting. I see now how stereotypes come into play, especially the one that we african-americans complain to much!!

"I'm a church man…And I kind of figured this here is about like it was with Moses with the children of Israel," admitted James Presley of Sledge, Mississippi to the McClatchey Press last December.
I can’t discount Mr. Presley’s feeling. It has been some 40-years since the Civil Rights Movement was short circuited by Dr. King’s assassination leaving African Americans in limbo. Throughout the years there seemed an un-ending search for a suitable black leader. From Jesse Jackson and Colin Powell to TV personalities like Tavis Smiley, black and white America searched until the 2003 Democratic National Convention when a young senator from Illinois named Barack Hussein Obama spoke to the nation. The rest is pretty ordinary until the Eclipse of August 2008 (see Slide 1 below) gave us our first black president.Slide 1
In the months and days leading up to the inauguration, many Americans echoed Mr. Presley’s sentiment and began pointing to similarities between President Barack Hussein Obama (BHO) and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK, Jr.) as well as Moses and Joshua from the Bible’s First Testament. Many liken Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to Moses and Joshua to Barack Hussein Obama.
Oddly, it does seem as if President Obama much like Joshua was standing in the right place at the right time. Frankly, it does seem as if his purpose is to lead a people across a great divide. Unlike Joshua, Obama’s greatest foe isn’t an army of men, but a nation suffering from mis-perception in desperate need of change.
Strangely, the black press has stepped back from what folks like James Presley see as obvious. Why only a few weeks ago, the Reverend Al Sharpton, widely known for his political activism on behalf of the citizens of New York, weighed in on the question. He attempted an explanation during the Tom Joyner Morning Show (TJMS) and quickly pointed to the obvious -- that President Obama is a politician while Dr. King was a reverend. "Obama would not exist had there not been a King," offered Reverend Sharpton.
With all due respect to Reverend Sharpton, I can’t believe he side stepped the grand opportunity to provide a spiritual explanation to simple folk like James Presley on Obama’s assent to the presidency. Now don’t get me wrong, Reverend Sharpton is a very smart man who has had the benefit of years of theological training including history, archaeology, and world religions. But this doesn’t erase the fact that good, well meaning, God fearing common folk like James Presley are looking to men like Reverend Sharpton for an answer to justify their feeling that some sort of biblical divine covenant has been reached between a people and their God.
So, like any good astrologer, I pulled up Barack Hussein Obama and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s charts and took a look (see Slide 2 below).Slide 2
Lo and behold I uncovered an astrological explanation for the simplistic down to earth feelings folks like Mr. Presley have about why the paths of Dr. King and President Obama appear connected.
Here are a few observations I gathered from the analysis of Dr. King and President Obama’s synastry charts. They are:
(1) When Dr. King’s journey on his road ended, he had a dirth of excess blessings on reserve (banked) for the right soul. But in 1968 future President Barack Hussein Obama was attending elementary school and not ready to receive King’s blessing. A crossing of fates had to be achieved. A simple visual analysis of the astrological charts in synastry of King and Obama can confirm that this indeed occurred. King’s North Node or Dragon’s Head lands smack dead in the middle of Obama’s first house and conjuncts Obama’s Moon. Obama may very well have modeled his personality, style and appearance after a father figure who he imagined and dreamed to be a lot like King.
(2) I offer that the charts in synastry indicate that King and Obama were brothers in past lives. In fact Slide 2’s synastry charts had so many connections I would go as far as say this is more likely a fact.
(3) Lastly, I offer that the charts in synastry show that King and Obama share a similar mission. King started it and Obama just picked up where King left off and moved forward. In western business culture they call this a finish to start relationship. In other words, King had to finish before Obama could start. This also explains the 40 year time lag? The time lag is due to the fact that King’s message had to set or rather solidify for African Americans, Women, Gays, Americans with Disabilities – everyone. Like Joshua, only when America was ready to fight for the civil rights of every man, woman, and child could a man like Obama vie for the presidency. The nation had to be cleansed and healed of its overt forms of disparity before someone like Obama could participate in a national election and win fair and square (see Slide 3 below for Timeline).Slide 3 - Historical Timeline
How does a non-astrologer like James Presley see these things so clearly?
James Presley was probably able to:
(1) Approach the topic with an open mind from a biblical perspective;
(2) Reference his unwavering trust in a higher power, like God as well as Saints and Angels;
(3) Believe that for everything there is a season, and
(4) Trust the work of his ancestors. Our Ancestors who wrote the bible also worked out astronomical and astrological systems that can predict the timing of events.
Today, there are only remnants of the systems our ancestors used to predict events. A good example of a remnant still going strong is the Farmers Almanac. It’s still published and widely read in North America, but it is only a remnant of the old methods of prediction successfully employed by slave and slave owner alike to survey, settle, farm and ranch the United States.
In my 2009 analysis of the King and Obama charts, I use some of the old remnants which include the astronomical events of our Moon. As stated in previous blogs, throughout the ages the Moon has been a better than accurate predictor of fateful events. Our ancestors used the Moon to predict the best time to plant, the next year’s weather, storms, change in seasons, times of travel, times of birth as well as the rise and fall of empires. For instance, The Rise of Obama series was created as a result of findings I uncovered after careful analysis of the Eclipse of August 2008 involving our Sun and Moon. Solar and Lunar eclipses and most notably the Moon’s orbits, shadows, and phases are considered astronomical phenomena and I believe that when read astrologically the Moon can show how people will be affected by events on earth.
One easy way of looking at astronomical phenomena is as a transportation system like a railway. At certain times trains (astronomical phenomena) full of tourists (Saints and Angels) show up with bags of “blessings” and “answers” both good and bad for the present, future and past.
For the purposes of building a better understanding among non-astrologers, I’m going to make an attempt at creating a fable. I call this fable “The Astronomical Making of a Man’s Mission.”
The Astronomical Making of a Man’s Mission
Right now we have a bunch of tourists (Saints and Angels) coming in at Earth Station North anxiously looking for a relative or an associate they haven’t seen in a few decades. Well, before many of them depart from the station, they crowd into telephone booths and computer kiosks only to discover that their relative has passed on or is just not in the position to receive the bag of blessings. So, many of our tourists (Saints and Angels) do an about face and head to Earth Station North’s Customer Service for help. The Customer Service Reps explain to the tourists how, in most cases, the blessings will go to the next worthy soul. But sometimes that worthy soul hasn’t been born yet or is not ready. In these cases, the Customer Service Rep recommends the blessings to be stored in a sort of Angel-Saint Savings and Loan or blessing bank.
Now just like there are millions of stars in the universe, there are many ways an Angel or Saint who finds a worthy soul can discharge a blessing. This is where a blessing type comes into play. Is it an isolated blessing like a miracle? Is it a one time window of opportunity? Is it part of the fated contract at birth? If it is part of the fated contract at birth with a bunch of what ifs attached to it, the tourist Angels tend to shy away from the planets. They’d rather employ the power of elliptical orbits that cross age old points, angles, and lines in the sky. The most widely used in the west are the Arabic Part of Fortune, The Vertex, and the Moon’s Nodes. The first choice is the Arabic Part of Fortune. She is good for miracles and other one time events. However, the Arabic Part of Fortune has a lot of rules having to do with partners and timing. There’s always the risk that the recipient could miss their intended blessing. The second is the Vertex but she may have a long wait time due to the fact that she requires a driver in order to be effective. While waiting she can lay dormant or spin up some pretty negative events and few Angels want all that. The third is the Moon’s Nodes. The Nodes are two guys named Dragon’s Head and Dragon’s Tail. One side is good, the other has a twist. Like the ocean tides, once every few hours the Moon’s Nodes re-position providing Angels and Saints an opportunity to discharge a varied range of blessings. Of course, because of the Nodes flexibility they have a long line -- but it’s moving!
At this point, I’m going to see if I can capture what may have taken place when a tourist Angel, looking for Martin Luther King, Jr. discovers that King has passed on. He’s made it from the Customer Service Desk to the queue for the Moon’s Nodes.
“Next” a voice calls out through a fog to a group of Angels. They all look over their shoulders and around piles of bags and satchels wondering who is next?
“I think it’s you” points a tall rotund man in a Persian style turban to a thin man in a toga wearing a laurel wreath around his head. After a moment or two of nervous squinting and arm flailing our toga clad fellow yells out “Yes, Yes!” But he is unsure of whether to walk straight or turn right or left.
“Step right this way,” the voice directs. Miraculously a short thin man in a red cap and a blue military style jacket with gold toned buttons appears at the toga clad Angel’s side to assist with his bags. The red capped man points the toga clad Angel into the fog. The toga clad Angel nods in response and steps hesitantly forward.
“Right this way,” the voice guides.
After a few steps through the thick fog the toga clad Angel sees a figure. It’s a man in a beige baseball cap. He’s seated at a glass desk in front of a wall of clear water. “Oh thank the heavens, it’s the clerk,” he whispers in prayer clasping his hands together. “I remember you,” the clerk announced pointing a pencil at the toga clad Angel. “You showed up here late for John Kennedy in 1964 and we ended up giving half his blessings to Lyndon Johnson and Martin Luther King, Jr.”
“I was not late,” responded the Angel indignantly.
“Rest your feet,” directed the man pointing his pencil at a folding chair. “So who’re ye here for?”
“Martin Luther King, Jr.” the Angel announced proudly.
“Ar ya serious?” asked the clerk.
“What madness is this…?"
“No madness,” the clerk replied in a chuckle. “But Martin Luther King, Jr. has been dead for some forty years and the last I heard he was volunteering as a Saint in Chicago.”
“A saint!”
The clerk pushed his chair back and turned facing the wall of flowing water. After a moment or two he waves his right hand horizontally back and forth across the flow.
“What do you see?” asked the Angel.
“A man who wants to be president. He is very good at finding common ground between people who don’t like each other. The language used is very different but the mission is the same.”
“In war!”
“No, in peace.”
“Aaaah!” responded the Angel. “Such a man regardless of his position is deserving of these gifts.”
“Huuuumm!” pondered the clerk. “But peace doesn’t feed people, or bring rains, or stop the earth from trembling. These are some of the world’s big problems.”
“You’re right God does all that” piped the toga clad Angel. “ Peace just allows beings like me to finish their work! Now young man, when can I discharge my goods?”
“August”…answered the clerk. The clerk’s image changed briefly to that of Father Time. This startled the toga clad Angel who sat back in his chair. Father Time then slowly turned back to the image of the clerk and began starring into the water. “Yes… August 1, 2008…there’s an eclipse… a Node, a Saint…it’ll work!”
The Angel, realizing that he was in the presence of a great one leaned forward cautiously and nodded in humble approval.
“You’ve got a 36-hour wait, ” explained the clerk. “I’ll give you a pass to the Lion’s Den and…”
“Biggie!!” a voice boomed from behind the clerk. A man resembling a very young and slim version of Brad Pitt emerged and without warning leapt toward the toga clad Angel.
“What madness is this…” screamed the toga clad Angel.
“Tupak, Tupak take yer hands offa that man, yeu don know him,” scolded the clerk.
The man the clerk referred to as Tupak stood up, withdrew and stared at the toga clad Angel whose headband of laurel sat lopsided and wilted upon his head.
“I’ve done it again, I’m sorry sir a…a…”
“I am Arcturus the 22nd” answered the Angel as he straightened his head laurel, rubbed his neck, and brushed dust from his toga.
“Tupak!” exclaimed the clerk in stern warning. Tupak crouched down low and faded from sight.
“Yes sir Mr. Arctorfus the 22nd step this way” said the clerk in a gentle tone seemingly undisturbed by the interruption. He rose from his desk and step around to the first Angel and extended his hand to help him up from his seat. “This way now. I’ll point you to the main Kiosk for the Lions Den. My assistant will carry your bags over. All you have to do is give them this pass and they’ll take it from there.”
The Angel Arcturus took the pass and quickly uttered prayers for what occurred between the clerk, the strange man called Tupak and himself. He then looked straight into the clerk’s eyes. “Just give him a mission and he will be whole again. “
“It is not my will,” responded the clerk as he guided the first Angel into the fog. As Arcturus stepped forward, he heard the clerk call out some feet behind him: “Next!”
Arcturus the 22nd, made his way confidently through the thick fog as directed by the clerk. After the 12th step the fog began to clear again. Soon he was able to make out a white gazebo. As he drew nearer he could hear voices. He detected some distress in the tones. It seemed that there was a dispute going on.
“Sir, may I remind you that I am General Goethals and I’m here to escort General Eisenhower on a pleasure trip to Hawaii.”
“You are not listening. You must go back through to the clerk and get a new pass,” pleaded another man. This one appeared as a young brown haired man fashioning a pony tail and a saber. Oddly, he was dressed in a long sleeve oversized white tee shirt, beige cargo paints, and sneakers. “This pass is no good for the Lions Den. It’s expired. Besides, General Eisenhower is not here!”
As soon as the Angel Arcturus approached, the man calling himself General Goethals faded from sight much like the Tupak fellow. In fact, he thought they looked the same.
“Welcome!” the pony tailed man bowed low, rose, clicked his heels and extended his hand. “Your pass please?”
Arcturus handed over his pass and watched as the pony tailed clerk examined it intently. “Please step this way,” he instructed leading Arcturus through the gazebo into a lush garden restaurant teeming with plants, flowers and wide screen TVs with headphones. Arcturus could see a bar in the foreground where a bartender was busy taking orders from waiters. All the tables were round with glass tops. They were garden tables with small telephones in the middle of them. All the tables were spaced generously allowing for extra wide chairs and ottomans. Several Angels who had arrived earlier were already snoozing -- a few with mouths gaped open. Judging from the mounds of food and empty glasses of wine, there was little wonder why this behavior was so pervasive.
The pony tailed man guided Arcturus to his table. “Here we are,” he explained clasping his hands and winking. “You have a 36-hour lay over before your event. The wait staff will bring you anything you’d like. The extra chairs and telephone are for visitors who will be collaborating with you on the event. If you need anything or have any questions our wait staff is equipped to assist you. Welcome to the Lion’s Den Angel Arcturus the 22nd and enjoy your stay.”
Arcturus the 22nd sat for a while undisturbed taking in his Eden like surroundings. He had nearly drifted off to sleep when a waiter appeared.
“Mr. Arcturus sir,” he said politely bowing low enough to expose the crown of his head where the hair was just beginning to thin. “My name is Slomenivic and I will be serving you today." He handed Arcturus a menu and explained what the specials were as well as the events that would occur. He wrote every request down and he seemed to appear instantaneously with food, drink, as well as incoming messages and reports. For some hours Arcturus was allowed to snooze. Angels don’t usually sleep but this was Earth Station North – odd things were not a surprise.
A day later the waiter appeared to gently wake Arcturus. “Your first member is here. It’s the Saint’s Dragon’s Head. He’s straight with the details he just wants to meet you.”
This happened repeatedly until the actual Saint appeared with another Angel called Guardian representing the Moon. It seemed as if they all had met before. They laughed and talked like old friends – but they weren’t. It may be another century before they all get the chance to meet again. The waiter brought wine and they toasted to this possibility as the countdown to the Eclipse of August 2008 began. The Saint left first to take his position and the Saint’s Node returned for his position was to sit with Arcturus. The Guardian representing the Moon departed next for his place was with the recipient. Arcturus was getting nervous it was time he opened his bag.
“Here it is!” Arcturus exclaimed raising an old, worn brown leather satchel.
“Do you think we’ll make a difference this time,” asked the Saint’s Dragon Head.
“It’s a slightly different approach,” explained Arcturus. “But I’m sure we’ll make a difference.”
Suddenly, the lights in the Lion’s Den dimmed – The Eclipse had arrived. Arcturus opened the satchel and a small spark of starlight flew out tapping the Saint’s Dragon Head on the shoulder and roaming slowly around the Lion’s Den. Then without warning the starlight took off at the speed of light traveling to each member of the Arcturus team positioned on Earth and in the Heavens. When light finally emerged from behind the Moon marking the end of the Eclipse, the starlight raced toward it and blended in with the Sun's rays racing toward North America (see Slide 4 below).Slide 4
Arcturus and the Saint’s Dragon Head jumped and dance around in glee.
“Thank you, it will be different. I just know it!” exclaimed the Saint’s Dragon Head.
At that moment the pony tailed man and the red capped man appeared to collect Arcturus and his bags.
Arcturus bid his friend farewell and wiped a tear from his eye.
“These bags are much lighter this time,” commented the red capped man as he lead Arcturus back through the Gazebo into a thick fog. In no time they were back aboard a train. “By the way, who did you decide to give the blessings to?” asked the red cap.
“I gave the light to a man running for president somewhere in America. I think they call him Obama.”

Just like when we were kids, sometimes a simple fable or two helps foster simple understandings. Maybe The Rise of Obama is just like what James Presley described when he told the media he saw Obama “like it was with Moses and the children of Israel.” Maybe it’s like Joshua? Maybe it’s like King? All I know is that the heavens have a way of re-cycling old blessings to fill a need.
Personally, I don’t believe Obama is like Moses, Joshua or King even though historical similarities exist. Frankly, I wouldn’t want Obama to lead us to a dead end in the desert for forty years, or into a war to kill every living soul because he made the Sun and the Moon stand still (by the way this was probably an eclipse). Similarly, I wouldn’t want Obama as a spiritual leader in the same manner as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King’s mission was unique. He was charged with changing the psychological mindset of a defeated people so they could stand up, challenge and change a nation’s culture and laws for the betterment of everyone. Anyone watching VH1 today can see how much circumstances have changed. My hope is that Obama’s rise will grow to foster understanding and trust among world leaders. Imagine a planet where world leaders really trusted the United States. Do you war with those you trust?
Yes, like in the case of Joshua, the Sun and the Moon seem to stand still long enough to bless Obama with the U.S. Presidency. If the Eclipse of August 2008 unleashed certain blessings fostering a miracle, my hope is that the miracle will continue to trample mis-perception and spawn constructive change for us all.

Well Tom I was unable to attend the inauguration in person. But I watched with my 81 year old grandmother and I was over come with emotions just from watching her reaction to the swearing in of the country's first black President. She cried, laughed, shouted and actually felt the presence of God during the swearing in ceremony. As I watched her with all of her many emotions. I cried also. She then said to me "baby you just don't know what we've gone through to get to this moment to see this man be sworn in as the country's first black President is almost more than I can bare. Right now I just can't explain to you what I'm feeling." You see Tom, we live in Mississippi and she's right I could never imagine what blacks must of had to go through sixty or seventy years ago here in the Jim Crow south. I have never experienced such an amazing event. It was truly a blessing for me to watch such an historical moment with my grandmother and one that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I just wanted to share my inaugural day moment with you. I love your show keep up the good work. Let's Go President Obama!!!!!!!!!!!

Racial Incidents and Threats A

Since election day, the number of threats against the president-elect, and racial or violent incidents directed at his supporters, have soared. The Secret Service is concerned, calling it the highest number of threats against a President-elect in memory, but the national media until this weekend have largely ignored the disturbing pattern. So a few days ago, over at the Editor & Publisher site, we started chronicling the incidents, which has drawn wide attention (so we will continue, though we hope the problem subsides).
Some claim that, given the size of this great country of ours, the incidents don't amount to much or are merely anecdotal. I would argue: The ones we know about may represent only the tip of the iceberg -- the ones that make it into the local press. And, yes, they may die down as the country gets used to the idea of a President Obama. On the other hand: They could soar again as that reality nears.
So let me just briefly list the full range of episodes, which doesn't even include several cross burnings on front lawns. These aren't necessarily the worst but they do capture the national flavor/fever. Note that about 2 out of 3 took place in states that Obama won.
* In a Maine convenience store, an Associated Press reporter saw a sign inviting customers to join a betting pool on when Obama might fall victim to an assassin. The sign solicited $1 entries into "The Osama Obama Shotgun Pool," saying the money would go to the person picking the date closest to when Obama was attacked. "Let's hope we have a winner."
* In Idaho, the Secret Service is investigating a "public hanging" sign erected by a man upset with the election outcome, the Bonner County Daily Bee reported Thursday. A handmade sign posted on a tree reads "FREE PUBLIC HANGING" written in large letters beneath a noose fashioned from nylon rope. The most prominent name on the sign is "OBAMA," according to the Bee. "That's a political statement. They can call it whatever they want, a threat or whatever," the creator of the sign, Ken Germana, told the Bee.
* A popular white supremacist Web sites got more than 2,000 new members the day after the election, compared with 91 new members on Election Day. The site, stormfront.org, was temporarily off-line on Nov. 5 because of the overwhelming amount of activity it received. One poster, identified as Dalderian Germanicus, of North Las Vegas, said, "I want the SOB laid out in a box to see how 'messiahs' come to rest."
* From the Orange County (Ca.) Register: "Two gang members pleaded not guilty Thursday to hate crime and attempted robbery charges in connection with the beating of a black man who was trying to buy cigarettes at a Fullerton liquor store." The two men shouted racial and anti-Obama epithets in the attack.
* From today's New York Times: "Two white Staten Island men face hate crimes charges after they were arrested on Friday in the beating of a black teenager on the night that Barack Obama was elected president, the police said on Saturday. The teenager, Alie Kamara, 17, was walking home on Pine Place in the Staten Island neighborhood of Stapleton when several men hit him on the head with a baseball bat and yelled 'Obama,' said Aliya Latif, the civil rights director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who was in contact with Alie's family since the attack and spoke to his mother on Saturday after the arrests were announced."
* In Mississippi alone, the American Civil Liberties Union has received more than 10 calls since the staff first reported anti-Obama incidents last Friday, according to the Jackson (Miss.) Free Press.
* In Midland, Mich., a man dressed in full Ku Klux Klan regalia walked around toting a handgun and waving an American flag. Initially denying it, the man eventually admitted to police that the display was a reaction to the Obama victory. "[The man] had a concealed weapon permit and was walking up and down the sidewalk in front of a vehicle dealership while some motorists shouted obscenities at him and others shouted accolades," police told The Saginaw News.
* Parents in Rexburg, Idaho, contacted school officials this week after they learned that 2nd and 3rd graders on a school bus were chanting, "Assasssinate Obama!"
* At the University of Texas in Austin, a racist post on Facebook has cost one student his place on the university football team, according to the Houston Chronicle. Buck Burnette, a sophomore offensive lineman for the fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns, was dismissed from the team on Nov. 5 after posting a racist remark about President-elect Obama as his "status" on the social networking Web site. Burnette posted: "All the hunters gather up, we have a [slur] in the White House," the Chronicle reported.
* AP reports: "While the world watched a Grant Park celebration heralding the election of the first black U.S. president, some white Chicago police officers committed hate crimes against black residents cheering Barack Obama's victory elsewhere in the city, attorneys alleged Thursday." Lawsuits have been filed.
* At Appalachian State University, the administration has expressed disappointment at the numerous times black students have expressed being harassed in residence halls since the election. The Appalachian, a student newspaper serving the university, also reported conversations suggesting Obama may not be alive in 2009 and a t-shirt seen around campus that reads "Obama '08, Biden '09."

Since election day, the number of threats against the president-elect, and racial or violent incidents directed at his supporters, have soared. The Secret Service is concerned, calling it the highest number of threats against a President-elect in memory, but the national media until this weekend have largely ignored the disturbing pattern. So a few days ago, over at the Editor & Publisher site, we started chronicling the incidents, which has drawn wide attention (so we will continue, though we hope the problem subsides).
Some claim that, given the size of this great country of ours, the incidents don't amount to much or are merely anecdotal. I would argue: The ones we know about may represent only the tip of the iceberg -- the ones that make it into the local press. And, yes, they may die down as the country gets used to the idea of a President Obama. On the other hand: They could soar again as that reality nears.
So let me just briefly list the full range of episodes, which doesn't even include several cross burnings on front lawns. These aren't necessarily the worst but they do capture the national flavor/fever. Note that about 2 out of 3 took place in states that Obama won.
* In a Maine convenience store, an Associated Press reporter saw a sign inviting customers to join a betting pool on when Obama might fall victim to an assassin. The sign solicited $1 entries into "The Osama Obama Shotgun Pool," saying the money would go to the person picking the date closest to when Obama was attacked. "Let's hope we have a winner."
* In Idaho, the Secret Service is investigating a "public hanging" sign erected by a man upset with the election outcome, the Bonner County Daily Bee reported Thursday. A handmade sign posted on a tree reads "FREE PUBLIC HANGING" written in large letters beneath a noose fashioned from nylon rope. The most prominent name on the sign is "OBAMA," according to the Bee. "That's a political statement. They can call it whatever they want, a threat or whatever," the creator of the sign, Ken Germana, told the Bee.
* A popular white supremacist Web sites got more than 2,000 new members the day after the election, compared with 91 new members on Election Day. The site, stormfront.org, was temporarily off-line on Nov. 5 because of the overwhelming amount of activity it received. One poster, identified as Dalderian Germanicus, of North Las Vegas, said, "I want the SOB laid out in a box to see how 'messiahs' come to rest."
* From the Orange County (Ca.) Register: "Two gang members pleaded not guilty Thursday to hate crime and attempted robbery charges in connection with the beating of a black man who was trying to buy cigarettes at a Fullerton liquor store." The two men shouted racial and anti-Obama epithets in the attack.
* From today's New York Times: "Two white Staten Island men face hate crimes charges after they were arrested on Friday in the beating of a black teenager on the night that Barack Obama was elected president, the police said on Saturday. The teenager, Alie Kamara, 17, was walking home on Pine Place in the Staten Island neighborhood of Stapleton when several men hit him on the head with a baseball bat and yelled 'Obama,' said Aliya Latif, the civil rights director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, who was in contact with Alie's family since the attack and spoke to his mother on Saturday after the arrests were announced."
* In Mississippi alone, the American Civil Liberties Union has received more than 10 calls since the staff first reported anti-Obama incidents last Friday, according to the Jackson (Miss.) Free Press.
* In Midland, Mich., a man dressed in full Ku Klux Klan regalia walked around toting a handgun and waving an American flag. Initially denying it, the man eventually admitted to police that the display was a reaction to the Obama victory. "[The man] had a concealed weapon permit and was walking up and down the sidewalk in front of a vehicle dealership while some motorists shouted obscenities at him and others shouted accolades," police told The Saginaw News.
* Parents in Rexburg, Idaho, contacted school officials this week after they learned that 2nd and 3rd graders on a school bus were chanting, "Assasssinate Obama!"
* At the University of Texas in Austin, a racist post on Facebook has cost one student his place on the university football team, according to the Houston Chronicle. Buck Burnette, a sophomore offensive lineman for the fourth-ranked Texas Longhorns, was dismissed from the team on Nov. 5 after posting a racist remark about President-elect Obama as his "status" on the social networking Web site. Burnette posted: "All the hunters gather up, we have a [slur] in the White House," the Chronicle reported.
* AP reports: "While the world watched a Grant Park celebration heralding the election of the first black U.S. president, some white Chicago police officers committed hate crimes against black residents cheering Barack Obama's victory elsewhere in the city, attorneys alleged Thursday." Lawsuits have been filed.
* At Appalachian State University, the administration has expressed disappointment at the numerous times black students have expressed being harassed in residence halls since the election. The Appalachian, a student newspaper serving the university, also reported conversations suggesting Obama may not be alive in 2009 and a t-shirt seen around campus that reads "Obama '08, Biden '09."

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama has imposed stricter conflict-of-interest restrictions on his White House transition team than any president before him. But a list of transition team members that his office made public on Friday includes a complicated tangle of ties to private influence-seekers.Among the full roster of about 150 staff members being assigned to government agencies between now and Inauguration Day are dozens of former lobbyists and some who were registered as recently as this year. Many more are executives and partners at firms that pay lobbyists, and former government officials who work as consultants or advisers to those seeking influence.

Vt. town grows divisible over Pledge of Allegiance
WOODBURY, Vt.(AP)
No one is sure when daily recitations of the Pledge of Allegiance fell by the wayside at Woodbury Elementary School.But efforts to restore them have erupted into a bitter dispute in this town of about 800 residents, with school officials blocking the exercise from classrooms over concerns that it holds children who don't participate up to scorn.
U.S. schoolchildren have long been able to opt out of reciting the pledge for religious reasons. But unlike other pledge controversies, this one centers on how and where schoolchildren say it, not whether they should.
"The whole thing is tearing our community apart," said Heather Lanphear, 39, the mother of a first-grader and an opponent of reciting the pledge in the classroom.
The brouhaha in the Vermont school began in September, when parent Ted Tedesco began circulating petitions calling for the return of pledge recitation as a daily practice in the 19th-century schoolhouse, which has 55 children in kindergarten through sixth grade.
School officials agreed to resume it as a daily exercise, but not in the classroom.
"We don't want to isolate children every day in their own classroom or make them feel they're different," said Principal Michaela Martin.

Alan Keyes files suit over Obama citizenship question

Former presidential candidate Alan Keyes and other members of his American Independent Party have filed suit in California Superior Court in Sacramento to stop the state from giving its electoral votes to President-elect Barack Obama.The suit contends that Secretary of State Debra Bowen and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger shouldn't be allowed to certify last week's election results for electors until Obama or his supporters provide proof of his natural-born citizenship in the United States.
Conservative bloggers maintained during the presidential election that Obama was born in Kenya, not Hawaii, and had citizenship in other countries, thus disqualifying him from the presidency.
Groups such as FactCheck.org investigated the claims and determined that Obama had a valid birth certificate from Hawaii.
It was not clear Friday evening how soon the suit would get a court hearing.

Audit: Sharpton campaign owes US nearly $500,000
WASHINGTON – Federal auditors have concluded the Rev. Al Sharpton's 2004 campaign owes the government nearly $500,000 for illegal donations and other financial improprieties. Sharpton has been feuding with the Federal Election Commission for years over his accounting in his failed run for president, for which he received $100,000 in so-called government matching funds that authorities later concluded he did not deserve because he hadn't followed campaign laws.The auditors have now determined that Sharpton owes $486,803 to the U.S. Treasury because of his campaign's taking improper donations, largely from the National Action Network, a not-for-profit corporation that Sharpton leads but is separate from his campaign committee.
Sharpton will appeal the finding, aides said Friday, which would extend an already years-long fight with the government over how he raised and spent money to run for president.
The audit report is "a gross violation of Reverend Al Sharpton's right to perform his paid duties as president of the National Action Network, a traveling minister, lecturer, and an author who was promoting a book during the time period being audited," said his spokeswoman, Rachel Noerdlinger.
Sharpton's campaign finances came under scrutiny as he campaigned, speaking at churches where he collected "love offerings" that are common to traveling preachers.

How low can oil go? A lot lower, but it'll recover

LONDON (Reuters) - World oil prices could easily fall below $50 a barrel and might even slip toward $40 or perhaps $35, but they will recover and could do so fairly quickly, analysts and economists say.Benchmark U.S. crude futures dropped to a 22-month low under $55 on Thursday as evidence mounted that the deepening recession would have a severe impact on demand, reducing the use of oil by industries and individuals alike.
Oil has now fallen more than 60 percent from July's record $147.27 a barrel and is moving close to what is widely considered to be the average operating cost, or "cash cost," for the world's oil major oil companies around $50 a barrel.
Many analysts think the market is likely to fall further, breaching the psychological $50 barrier before recovering.

Lawsuits claim election night hate crimes by police

Several lawsuits have alleged that Chicago police abused Chicago citizens as they celebrated the win of Barack Obama.
CBS' Chicago affiliate reported:
Two more women are suing Chicago Police for hate crimes and battery after officers allegedly sprayed pepper spray on the women and their children and barged into their West Side home as they celebrated Barack Obama's Election Night victory.
Her family was standing outside their home in the 3400 block of West Chicago Avenue cheering and celebrating Obama's victory when police squad cars drove down the street and one or more officers hung out the window and discharged pepper spray at the crowd, the suit said.
After some words were exchanged, officers exited their vehicles with guns drawn and kicked open the door to the Arnold family home, according to the suit.
The officers allegedly knocked some of the family members to the ground and made racial comments, the suit said.

Jury awards $2.5 million to teen beaten by Klan members
(CNN) -- A jury awarded $2.5 million in damages on Friday to a Kentucky teenager who was severely beaten by members of a Ku Klux Klan group because they mistakenly thought he was an illegal Latino immigrant, the Southern Poverty Law Center said.The jury found that the Imperial Klans of America and its founder wrongfully targeted 16-year-old Jordan Gruver, an American citizen of Panamanian and Native-American descent.
The verdict included $1.5 million in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages against "Imperial Wizard" Ron Edwards.
The law center said before the verdict that a large damage award could break the Klan group, allowing the teen and the law center to seize the group's assets, including its headquarters, a 15-acre compound in Dawson Springs, Kentucky.
"We look forward to collecting every dime that we can for our client and to putting the Imperial Klans of America out of business," said SPLC founder and chief trial attorney Morris Dees, who tried the case.

North Carolina cops investigated for possible racial slurs against Obama
DURHAM - Derogatory remarks toward President-elect Barack Obama made on a social networking Web site are now the subject of an internal police investigation.
A police department employee claims the statements were made on the MySpace pages of two Durham officers.
"There's no exact words that were said," said Police Chief Jose L. Lopez Sr. in a telephone interview Wednesday from San Diego, where he is attending the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference. "It wasn't a racial slur, but we're still investigating it."
Investigators, who are focusing on the context of what was written, have been looking into the allegations since Thursday.
Lopez wouldn't disclose what was said or identify the officers involved.
City Manager Tom Bonfield, who was notified of the investigation late Tuesday afternoon, said he advised Lopez to complete it as quickly as possible.
Bonfield, whom Lopez reports to, said the department has the discretion to notify him of such inquiries.
The police, as well as other city agencies, have a good sense of when an issue is big enough to notify him, said Bonfield, who added that he notified city council members within an hour of talking with Lopez.
"It's important that the investigators have a chance to do their jobs and make sure they get all of the information," he said. "I think it's important that the police are given the opportunity to respond against any allegations against them."
Bonfield added that if the allegations are found to be true and officers posted racially charged statements, then an appropriate response by the department would be warranted.
The department's code of conduct, under the heading "private life," states that an officer's "character and conduct while off duty must always be exemplary, thus maintaining a position of respect in the community in which he or she lives and serves. The officer's personal behavior must be beyond reproach."
Lopez said even though the remarks were made on a personal Web page, the comments could be a violation of the policy.
"As a police officer, it doesn't matter where you do it, if you provide disservice to the organization, it violates the [department's] code of conduct," he said. "It is a high standard that officers are held accountable to."

In the wake of the Republican Governors Association (RGA) convention this week in Miami, many GOP governors were reluctant to embrace Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) as the party’s leader or presidential candidate for 2012. Today, the RGA made that sentiment official, by not voting her in to any of the organization’s leadership positions:
The Republican Governors Association announced its new leadership lineup today after their annual meeting concluded Thursday in Miami.South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was voted RGA chairman, taking over the top job from Texas Gov. Rick Perry who will now serve as finance chairman. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is vice-chairman, while Florida Gov. According to [Sarkozy’s chief diplomatic adviser, Jean-David] Levitte, the Russian seemed unconcerned by international reaction. “I am going to hang Saakashvili by the balls,” Mr. Putin declared.Mr. Sarkozy thought he had misheard. “Hang him?” — he asked. “Why not?” Mr. Putin replied. “The Americans hanged Saddam Hussein.”
Mr. Sarkozy, using the familiar tu, tried to reason with him: “Yes but do you want to end up like [President] Bush?” Mr. Putin was briefly lost for words, then said: “Ah — you have scored a point there.”

Rahm Emanuel apologizes for father's disparaging remarks about Arabs
U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel apologized to an Arab-American group on Thursday for comments disparaging Arabs made by his father.
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee sent a letter to Emanuel calling on him to distance himself from remarks made by the elder Emanuel in an interview with an Israeli newspaper following his son's appointment last week.
In the interview, Benjamin Emanuel was reported as saying: "Obviously, he will influence the president to be pro-Israel. Why wouldn't he? What is he, an Arab? He's not going to clean the floors of the White House." Displaced people are surrounding the compounds of bewildered U.N. peacekeepers. Young boys and men are hiding in the forest to avoid being killed or forced into armed groups."There are only girls left in the schools in my village," one 13-year-old boy told me. The day before, he and three friends had run from rebel soldiers who'd come to kidnap them.
There are now more than 1 million displaced people scattered throughout the province. In the last 10 years of fighting, more than 5 million people have died in the Congolese conflict—mostly civilians who haven't had access to enough food or health care because of the fighting. President-elect Barack Obama has formally named his friend Valerie Jarrett to be a senior adviser in the White House. Her official title will be "senior advisor and assistant to the President for Inter-government relations and Public Liaison in the Obama White House," according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Lynn Sweet.Jarrett is a co-chair of Obama's transition team and was a top advisor to him during the presidential campaign.

(AP)An American man who suffered from AIDS appears to have been cured of the disease 20 months after receiving a targeted bone marrow transplant normally used to fight leukemia, his doctors said Wednesday.
While researchers - and the doctors themselves - caution that the case might be no more than a fluke, others say it may inspire a greater interest in gene therapy to fight the disease that claims 2 million lives each year. The virus has infected 33 million people worldwide.
Dr. Gero Huetter said his 42-year-old patient, an American living in Berlin who was not identified, had been infected with the AIDS virus for more than a decade. But 20 months after undergoing a transplant of genetically selected bone marrow, he no longer shows signs of carrying the virus.
"We waited every day for a bad reading," Huetter said.

(AP)A federal appeals court upheld bribery and other charges against Louisiana Democratic U.S. Rep. William Jefferson on Wednesday, clearing the way for a trial.
Jefferson, who cruised to victory in a primary last week and is expected to easily win re-election, had sought to dismiss a 16-count indictment charging him with taking bribes, laundering money and misusing his congressional office for business dealings in Africa.
A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Jefferson's claims that a federal grand jury received evidence that violated his constitutional right to legislative immunity.
Jefferson's attorneys argued that three staffers should not have been allowed to tell the grand jury about Jefferson's relationships with African leaders and his knowledge about West African nations because those activities were part of his legislative duties.

Congo rebels make roadblock out of bodies
KILIMANYOKA, Congo (AP) -- The road that leads into rebel-controlled Congo begins with a makeshift roadblock made from the corpses of two government soldiers strewn across the dark volcanic earth.The pair on Wednesday blocked the main two-lane track running north from the regional capital, Goma -- one with a bullet in his forehead and a frozen fist grasping the air above.
The scene was meant as a warning to government troops just a few hundred yards down the road whom the rebels had battled the night before. And for the few fearful civilians trickling past the frontline, it was clear message that Congo's savage war is not easing amid fears it could draw in Angola and others in the region.
"We don't want any more of it," said 18-year-old John Biamungu, who pushed a wooden bicycle past the corpse-strewn checkpoint as rebels stood in a clutch of trees on both sides staring silently.
Years of sporadic violence in eastern Congo intensified in August, and fighting between the army and fighters loyal to rebel leader Laurent Nkunda has displaced at least 250,000 people since then -- despite the presence of the largest U.N. peacekeeping force in the world.

Controversial Sign
CBS 21 News gets answers after a concerned viewer emails us about a controversial sign. The sign sits in a front yard in Littlestown, Adams County and is aimed at gun control and Muslims. Our CBS 21 News crew went to Littlestown and tracked down the homeowner, Kenneth Frock.
"It's our right according to the constitution to have and bear arms and anybody who tries to take that away from me I will fight to the death," says Frock. Frock believes greater gun control will be enforced by the new Obama administration. He also believes Muslims, out to do harm, need to be stopped. According to Shannon Powers with the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission, although we do have the right to free speech, a sign such as this one could spell out something more. "This kind of sign can create tension within a neighborhood particularly for someone of Muslim or Arab descent," says Powers. Obama health plan to cost $75 billion: analysis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President-elect Barack Obama's plans to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system would cost the federal government $75 billion the first year but would provide health insurance for 95 percent of Americans, consulting firm PriceWaterhouseCoopers said on Wednesday.This works out to about $2,500 per newly insured person, the firm said in a report.
"The plan would increase to $1 trillion cumulatively by 2018 or approximately $130 billion per year," the report said.
While the plan would extend health insurance to two-thirds of the 47 million people who currently lack it, the overhaul may worsen some problems, such as a shortage of primary care doctors, the analysis found.
"Unless costs are cut, growing health care costs will increase the costs of Obama's plan dramatically over time and reduce the effectiveness of mandates. This could make the federal costs unsustainably high," the report said.
"Because of the deficit and financial crisis, there's unlikely to be any new federal money available, so health reform may require reallocation of dollars already in the health system."

Facebook postings land N.C. teachers in hot water
- The Charlotte ObserverCHARLOTTE -- A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools teacher faces firing for posting derogatory comments about students on Facebook, while four others have been disciplined for posts involving “poor judgment and bad taste,” school district spokeswoman Nora Carr said Tuesday.
WCNC, The (Charlotte) Observer's news partner, turned up questionable pages on the social networking site by searching for people who identified themselves as Charlotte-Mecklenburg employees.
Superintendent Peter Gorman has recommended firing a teacher who listed “teaching chitlins in the ghetto of Charlotte” as one of her activities and drinking as one of her hobbies.

In her “About Me” section she wrote: “I am teaching in the most ghetto school in Charlotte.”

The Observer is not publishing her name, pending the district's final decision in her case.
Reporter Jeff Campbell of WCNC said he showed district officials pages involving seven CMS teachers. Carr said four faced unspecified discipline that is less than suspension or dismissal. She would not provide details about the offensive material, but the pages Campbell submitted included photos of female teachers in sexually suggestive poses and a black male teacher who listed “Chillin wit my n---as!!!” as an activity and had a suggestive exchange with a female “Facebook friend” accompanying a shirtless photo of himself.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss’s (R-GA) re-election camp has confirmed that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will campaign for Chambliss in Georgia this week. The incumbent Republican is “locked in a tight runoff with Democrat Jim Martin that will be decided on Dec. 2.”Chambliss won his Senate seat in 2002 by defeating incumbent Max Cleland (D), a veteran who lost both arms and one leg in Vietnam. Chambliss’s strategy at the time was to paint Cleland as soft on national security. As part of that strategy, he ran a television ad linking Cleland to Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden. SPRINGFIELD - Donnie Hatten was ecstatic about last week's presidential election. But when she was invited to a large celebratory gathering at a banquet hall packed with other African-Americans that night, she balked.
" 'Somebody might throw a bomb in there,' " she recalls replying.
No bombs were thrown into the party, but just after 3 a.m. several miles away, someone crept into a clearing in the woods and set fire to the predominantly black Macedonia Church of God in Christ, reducing it to a skeleton of charred metal and wood.
Investigators have yet to determine why the church was targeted, but they say the timing, just hours after Barack Obama broke the highest racial barrier in politics, raised suspicions that it was a hate crime. It touched off a raw fear that has lurked just below the surface in many black communities, that Obama's breakthrough success would trigger a backlash against blacks.

Obama Plans Probe Of Bush Torture Whether Or Not Officials Are Pardoned
WASHINGTON -- With growing talk in Washington that President Bush may be considering an unprecedented "blanket pardon" for people involved in his administration's brutal interrogation policies, advisors to Barack Obama are pressing ahead with plans for a nonpartisan commission to investigate alleged abuses under Bush.
The Obama plan, first revealed by Salon in August, would emphasize fact-finding investigation over prosecution. Last week's election of Barack Obama was the equivalent of taking all African-Americans to that peak, says Dr. Alvin Poussaint.startclickprintexclude
In his view, Obama's victory last week wasn't just a political triumph. It was a seismic event in the history of black America.
Poussaint has made it his life's work to study how African-Americans see themselves and how the larger society sees them.
From the days of the civil rights movement through the 1980s, when he was a script consultant on "The Cosby Show," to today, he has been a leader in assessing how images of black people in the media shape perceptions. Poussaint, who is 74, is professor of psychiatry at Judge Baker Children's Center in Boston and at Harvard Medical School.
At a key point in the civil rights movement, Poussaint moved to Mississippi and worked for the Medical Committee for Human Rights, in Jackson, from 1965 to 1967, helping care for civil rights workers and aiding the desegregation of hospitals and other health care institutions.
Poussaint met Bill Cosby in the 1970s and has worked with him on a variety of books and shows, most recently co-authoring a book with Cosby. He was interviewed by CNN on Wednesday.

Obama Plot Skinhead Wants Dismissal
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A white supremacist charged with plotting to kill President-elect Barack Obama and other black people wants his indictment dismissed, arguing that the federal grand jury that charged him had too many black members.Twenty-year-old Daniel Cowart of rural West Tennessee and 18-year-old Paul Schlesselman of Helena-West Helena, Ark., face charges including threatening a presidential candidate and taking firearms across state lines to commit crimes.
Authorities say the pair plotted a robbery and killing spree in which they would murder dozens of black people, including Obama.
Cowart's lawyer filed a petition Thursday seeking to have his client's indictment dismissed.
It argues that the 23-member grand jury that returned the indictment had just two white members and could not have been fair and impartial.

85,000 homes lost to foreclosure in October
As government and industry scramble to reverse the tide of foreclosures, filings jumped 25% in October.
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- As government and industry scrambled to stem the housing crisis, another 84,868 homes were lost to foreclosure in October, according to a report released Thursday.
Last month 279,561 struggling borrowers received foreclosure filings, including default notices, notices of auction sales and bank repossessions, according to RealtyTrac, an online marketplace for foreclosures. That's a 5% increase from September, and up 25% from October 2007.
"October marks the 34th consecutive month where U.S. foreclosure activity has increased compared to the prior year," said James J. Saccacio, chief executive officer of RealtyTrac, in a statement.
A total of 936,439 homes have been lost to foreclosure since the housing crisis hit in August, 2007.
Foreclosures hit a record high in August when 304,000 homes were in default and 91,000 families lost their houses. Since then, a number of states have adopted legislation to freeze foreclosures and give homeowners a chance to modify their mortgages. These laws have helped slowed the rate of foreclosures.

Some theorists argue that political and social change is preceded by shifts in popular culture. So it’s not surprising that the debate has heated up over who, or what, in arts and entertainment presaged Barack Obama’s election as president.
Many ideas have ricocheted around academia and the blogosphere — from Oprah Winfrey to Tiger Woods to Will Smith to “The West Wing,” to the many actors who have played black presidents, among them Morgan Freeman and Chris Rock (although not that many people actually saw Mr. Rock’s film “Head of State”).
But one idea seems to be gaining traction, and improbably it has Bill Cosby and Karl Rove in agreement: “The Cosby Show,” which began on NBC in 1984 and depicted the Huxtables, an upwardly mobile black family — a departure from the dysfunction and bickering that had characterized some previous shows about black families — had succeeded in changing racial attitudes enough to make an Obama candidacy possible.

A couple of months ago, there was a media kerfuffle when Oprah Winfrey said she would not have Gov. Sarah Palin on the show during the election.
Now that the election is over, the door is open to the former vice presidential candidate. A representative for Oprah's talk show said that "we have extended an invitation" to the Alaska governor.
There's no word yet on whether Oprah, a prominent Obama supporter, has received a yea or nay from the camp of Palin, who is still much in the news as a candidate for 2012 and as a controversial figure even within the McCain campaign.********************************

Toll Of Children, Teachers Killed In Building Collapse Raised To 75; More May Be Trapped
(CBS/AP) sphereit start The mayor of Petionville said the death toll now stands at 75 from the collapse of a school in Haiti after crews uncovered a classroom filled with students and a teacher.
Claire Lydie Parent told The Associated Press that at least 17 students were found crushed on Saturday as crews continue to search for victims.
Authorities said there may have been hundreds of students in La Promesse school when the concrete building collapsed Friday. Rescuers used bare hands to pull bleeding students from the wreckage.
Underneath the massive pile of concrete are children, possibly 300 or more, reports CBS News correspondent Kelly Cobiella.
The school came down late in the morning while students from kindergarten to high school age were going to class, reports Cobiella.
At least 39 bodies were brought to the morgue at Port-au-Prince's General Hospital, Haitian police spokesman Garry Desrosier said.
Another eight people died in a trauma center run by the aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders, spokesman Francois Servranckx said. More than 80 others were being treated for injuries by the aid group.
Rescuers worked furiously through the night under floodlights to pull children from the wreckage and give water to those still stuck in the rubble. Thousands looked on from beside the school and across the valley, cheering each time a live student emerged.
But the rescue effort was chaotic and disorganized from the start. MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (AP) -- When 10-year-old Austin Smith heard Barack Obama had been elected president, he had one question: Does this mean I won't get a new gun for Christmas?
That brought his mother, the camouflage-clad Rachel Smith, to Bob Moates Sports Shop
on Thursday, where she was picking out that special 20-gauge shotgun - one of at least five weapons she plans to buy before Obama takes office in January.Like Smith, gun enthusiasts nationwide are stocking up on firearms out of fears that the combination of an Obama administration and a Democrat-dominated Congress will result in tough new gun laws.
"I think they're going to really try to crack down on guns and make it harder for people to try to purchase them," said Smith, 32, who taught all five of her children - ages 4 to 10 - to shoot because the family relies on game for food.
Last month, as an Obama win looked increasingly inevitable, there were more than 108,000 more background checks for gun purchases than in October 2007, a 15 percent increase. And they were up about 8 percent for the year as of Oct. 26, according to the FBI.
No data was available for gun purchases this week, but gun shops from suburban Virginia to the Rockies report record sales since Tuesday's election.

Mississippi students told not to say Obama's name

Published: Friday November 7, 2008A controversy has erupted at a Mississippi junior high school over allegations that a bus driver and a coach threatened students with punishment for saying Barack Obama's name.
The incidents became public when outraged parents called the studios of WAPT news in Pearl, Miss. Some said their children were threatened by a bus driver with being written up and taken to the principal's office, others that their children were told by a girls' basketball coach they would be suspended.
Reginald Simpson, a student at Pearl Junior High, explained that when students on the bus started saying, "Obama is our president," the bus driver told them she didn't want to hear his name. One kid said, "This is history woman," and according to Simpson, "She pulled over and kicked me and the kid off the bus." They were left waiting at the high school and later taken to their own school.
"They feel like they afraid to say who our president is, cause they afraid they going to be in trouble," Reginald's mother Canishia told WAPT. "We teach our kids not to be racist, and here it is going on. I just feel hurt by it."
The Simpson family is black. However, another mother whose son was on the bus and who also plans to confront school officials about the incident is white. "This is what the whole election was about," Venus Neagu told WAPT. "It was supporting someone. And now that they've done it and they're on the school bus, now they're getting consequences for it."
School officials reviewed video from the bus and promised that no students would be punished. The superintendent released a statement saying, "It appears that some persons, out of disappointment and disillusionment with the election may have been so frustrated that they said something inappropriate to students. President-elect Barack Obama's newly appointed chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, served on the board of directors of the federal mortgage firm Freddie Mac at a time when scandal was brewing at the troubled agency and the board failed to spot "red flags," according to government reports reviewed by ABCNews.com.
According to a complaint later filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission, Freddie Mac, known formally as the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation, misreported profits by billions of dollars in order to deceive investors between the years 2000 and 2002.

Simpson, 61, whose trial for the brutal 1994 murder of his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman ended up in his acquittal, was found guilty on October 4 of 12 charges in the armed robbery and kidnapping of the two collectors in the Las Vegas Palace Station casino on September 13, 2007.
Simpson and Stewart both face life in prison, and their sentences in the case are scheduled to be handed down on December 5.
Simpson's acquittal in the racially charged 1995 Los Angeles murder trial was greeted with widespread outrage across the United States.
The 1970s professional football hero has always vehemently denied murdering his former wife and her friend.

Obama's transition spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter confirmed the president-elect would not be attending the upcoming summit.
"As he said himself, there is only one president at a time," she told reporters after Obama's first post-election news conference in Chicago.
Earlier the White House confirmed it did not expect Obama to take a seat at the talks on November 15.
"We are in communication and coordination with them. I don't know whether someone will actually be in the building. I don't expect in the room," spokesman Tony Fratto said of Obama's economic team.But Fratto pledged close cooperation with the president-elect's economic advisers on the best way to respond to the global financial meltdown in order to avoid sending "confusing signals" to international markets.
"We look forward to hearing their views on how to deal with these issues which are going to go on for some time," the spokesman said one week before outgoing US President George W. Bush hosts the summit.
Obama is keen not to trample on the sitting president's authority. But his aides are also leery of becoming too closely associated with the outgoing administration's 700-billion-dollar banking bailout, which remains unpopular among many voters, sources said.
The November 15 talks will bring together leaders of the Group of 20 rich countries and major developing economies to discuss cooperative measures for responding to the global economic meltdown and ways to prevent future crises.
The G20 includes the seven major industrialized nations -- Britain, Canada, France, Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States -- plus Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey.
It also takes in the 27-nation European Union, represented by France, which holds the rotating EU presidency. The International Monetary Fund and World Bank also participate in its meetings.**********************************

The author of this vile letter is Tom Minnery, Senior Vice President of Focus on the Family Action. It was nearly inevitable that anger over losing the 2008 election would soon provoke right-wing extremists to violate Godwin's Law. Obama's victory in Colorado may have been particularly galling for the Colorado Springs based Focus on the Family, which has been heavily involved in the political campaign this year advocating for conservative issues. James Dobson personally endorsed the McCain-Palin ticket this fall.

Carroll named first black speaker of Colo. House

DENVER | Democratic Rep. Terrance Carroll was chosen Thursday to be the new speaker of the Colorado House, the first black named to the position.
The Denver lawmaker was nominated by majority Democrats on Thursday and will be formally elected by the full House in January, when the next session convenes.
Ratification is usually unanimous. It would be the first time the state has black leaders in both houses after Senate President Peter Groff re-nominated to that position on Thursday.
"It just shows how, with the selection of Sen. Groff and president-elect Barack Obama, that there are no limits to what we can do. It really shows we made significant progress, but there is still much work to be done," Carroll said.
It was a bittersweet day for House Democrats, who also said goodbye to Rep. 2 baggage handlers arrested at LAX
8:16 p.m. November 7, 2008LOS ANGELES – Two baggage handlers are accused of stealing $10,000 and hundreds of items from luggage at the Los Angeles International Airport.
KCBS-TV reported Friday that Roman Jaime and Carlos Garcia were arrested Oct. 30 on the tarmac. Police recovered 272 items at their homes, including purses, cameras, computers and cash.
Police say undercover officers became suspicious of the pair because many of the flights they worked had reports of thefts from baggage.
LAX police would not elaborate on the case Friday night and it was not immediately clear if either suspect had an attorney.
Lara Uselding, spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration, says more than 460 transportation security officers nationwide have been fired for theft since May 2003. She says that represents 0.4 percent of the agency's workers.

my name is gerald cross I have been following the tom Joyner show from it's beginning. I lived in Mobile, al for more than twenty years. The first time i saw Tom was at his brother restaurant on wilson ave. around 1982.
I graduate from the Unversity of South Alabama, but not before attending Jackson State University where I played in the boom as well as at least one member of my family dating back to 1965 to the present with my sister's two daughters Tori and Mea who are J settes My father and mother both graduate from Jackson State. Beteen the two of my parents they were responsible for helping get more than 150 students in one of the three major Black schools in the state of Ms. When I look around the State now and see some of these students I am reminded of the work of the teachers who were dedicated to seeing the day that we are all witnessing and blessed with. It is because of these people that each one of us have to some degree achieved the success that we have the people like coach Cooley, coach Jones, Band teachers luike my father and music teachers like my Elijah and mother Paralee Cross. This is the day the Mrs. Obama was speaking of for the "first time in my adult life I am proud of my country". If you are not black you may not understand this is our reality man I felt great this morning when I voted because there was hope for my country and my people. It is because of the people who came before us that I can live in a gated community in Mississippi where my skin color want keep me out if I have the means and no-one burning a cross on my lawn. Thank you my people.
