At least half of all MEPs must sign this Declaration before 21st January 2010.
If this is achieved, then the campaign will be a step closer to ending these journeys for good!

  • Gruesome scene of horse suffer

    • From: voicesforhorses
    • Description:

Just three weeks ago, 25 thin and neglected foals, stallions and pregnant mares were removed from an isolated farm in Aberdeenshire. The semi feral horses had not been handled or received even the most basic of care for many months and were forced to wade through thick mud to reach what little grazing was available. They had been allowed to breed indiscriminately and the body of a still born foal had been left where it lay. A weak and collapsed filly was also found and had to be put to sleep.

The plight of the horses was discovered after a concerned member of the public called World Horse Welfares free UK Welfare Hotline. Field Officer Doug Howie was sent to investigate and was shocked at what he found. Doug knew that in order to get the horses signed over and ensure their safe removal, he would have to keep quiet about a terrible discovery he had made at the premises.

      www.thehorserefuge.org

The Horse Refuge needs urgent financial help to avoid closure.  Where possible horses have been re-homed, but our remaining 40 permanent residents have suffered the most terrible abuse and will bear the scars for life. They are happy now, but have been too traumatised to remove them from their safe environment here and would become incredibly stressed and dangerous if this was to happen. Their fate would be terrible.  We never give up on a horse and provide the 24 hour care that many of them need.

Our future plans are good, but we just need to get through the next two months.  Pease, please help us to keep going and give these wonderful animals a chance and a secure future.  Come and visit, or telephone for more information.  Donations please, however small, to the above address.
With very many thanks,  Sara Ross

Online donations via paypal or card can be made on The Horse Refuge website. Please click link to visit the home page, where donation buttons can be found http://www.thehorserefuge.org

The picture attached shows Sara with Duke, one of The Horse Refuge's residents and the UK's biggest horse! Duke stands at 19.3hh!

Daily Mail Article, 24th March 09 '......Duke lives in a stable which had to be custom-built to fit all four hooves, and his blankets have to be made to measure. And he munches through £80 of food a week. The one-ton giant has already claimed the title of Britain's tallest. horse.

At five years old he is still growing, however - and may one day take the world record from Radar, a Canadian shire who is around an inch taller.

Earlier this week the Daily Mail featured Chilli, a nine-year-old Friesian who at 6ft6in is believed to be the country's tallest bullock.

Luckily for those who take care of Duke, he is as gentle as a lamb.

Carer Sara Ross said: "He's a big baby at heart and is frightened of lots of things, which is unusual because he's such a huge horse and shires are generally very laid back.

"The first time he heard a mobile phone, he freaked. He also doesn't like the rain and will come running back to his stable when it's raining. He also hates snow."

She added: "We rescued him about 18 months ago when his owner suddenly died and since then he's grown and grown.

"He's the biggest horse I've ever seen and I've seen quite a few horses over the years. He's an absolute giant."

The amount of food he eats is four times that of a normal horse, said Mrs Ross.

"He can really pack it away. In the summer he has two small feeds and then eats grass in the field.

"In winter, he has two large feeds and "ad-lib" hay - which generally means around one-and-a-half bales a day. If he didn't come in at night he'd eat all the grass in the field."

Despite his size, Duke gets on well with his more diminutive stablemates and has a particularly soft spot for a Shetland pony called Jasper.

The average height of a shire horse is 17.2 hands. The British record of 19.2 hands was held by a shire called Cracker until his death last year.'

PLEASE HELP THE CARTWHEEL HORSES OF CANAKKALE-TURKEY

      Horses used by the Romanis (aka Turkish Gypsies) in the city for cartwheel freight transportation-and mostly suffer during their short lives because of abuse and starvation-are now at the brink of total extinction.  The mayor of Canakkale Ulgur Gokhan has ordered that the 80 or more of such horses should be expropriated from their current Romani owners and left to the wilderness without any medical aid, food or water.  The horses will either end up at an illegal slaughterhouse or an immature death from starvation and illnesses.  Mayor Gokhan on the other hand may collect the harvest in the form of votes in the upcoming local elections coming from;

-Romani families in exchange of TL 5,000 paid per horse,

-and the public in general for getting rid of slow and dangerous horse drawn cartwheels spoiling the city traffic.

BUT NOT A SINGLE PERSON OR GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITY CARES FOR THE HORSES.

The municipality declines the fact that the horses are being left to the wilderness.  However they also can not answer and document where they are right now.  Please find attached a series of photographs captured by us showing a group of sick and wounded horses left to the wilderness.

We cry out for help and need your support...

    • From: voicesforhorses
    • Description:
Actress Claire King, a long-time supporter of World Horse Welfare, travelled to Lesotho in August. Viewers will know Claire from Emmerdale, where she played Kim Tate, Bad Girls, where she was governor Karen Betts and from Strictly Come Dancing, where she partnered Brendan Cole. In Lesotho she met farriers and saddlery students being trained by the charity and the problems faced by horses there. "The terrain is so harsh and mountainous [in Lesotho] that they have no choice but to use the horse as their main mode of transport," said Claire. "What was especially noticeable was the tack. The bits were worn too low and were clanking against their teeth. The old military saddles were falling apart and the harnesses just didn't fit at all. I saw horses with incredible sores on their backs," she added. As well as Lesotho, World Horse Welfare's international training programmes are also underway in Mexico, Romania. Students are chosen from the local community to spend a year training in farriery or saddlery. The best students go on to be the trainers of tomorrow, passing the skills on. Talulah and Shiloh - We had two new additions this week. Talulah the foal and her mom Shiloh. Mom was found as a stray and really didnt look like she was pregnant. But Talulah popped out and is healthy and very cute. Shiloh was very nervous when she first came in but has improved a lot. Unamed Donkey and Baby - We rescued a female donkey that had been stuck in a bog for about 3 to 4 days. The baby donkey had stayed with his mother through the whole ordeal and never left her side. It was very moving watching her nuzzling her mother gently as we waited for more help to come. She was very week and we had to carry her up from a deep sloppy gouge to get her out. Her baby was so tired but he struggled up after his mother. Back at the unit we had a vet and vet nurse waiting to treat mommy, she still could not stand up. She went on the drip and we made her as comfortable as we could. After a while she tried to get up, so with lots of help and the aid of a hoist they managed to hoist her up. She tried to stand but was too weak. Mommy donkey passed away in my arms the following afternoon. It brought tears to my eyes to see the baby donkey with his mother as he moarned her death. Baby donkey was later moved into a stable with another donkey orphan that we have at the unit and have become the best of friend- will update you all on progress Gill
