Busy, busy, busy. That's what things are like in the WWE right about now.
We're right around the corner from Wrestlemania 25, the granddaddy of 'em all, the showcase of the immortals, the grandest stage of them all....the most nerve wracking experience of my life.
I've performed live on Raw in a main event match, I've performed at big PPVs like Summerslam and Survivor Series, hell I've performed at Wrestlemania on the undercard....but never have I performed in one of the five big matches on an event of this magnitude, never. With all due respect to Ric he's not a young man anymore, in order for our match to be the match I know it can be we're going to need Ric's quarter of a century in experience and I'm going to have to bare the brunt of the physical work. Don't get me wrong, I have complete confidence that Ric can and will put on a fantastic showing and wow the crowd but it will not be easy. Can we do it? Will we do it? You're damn right.
Things lately in the WWE have been quiet, a lot of the guys seem to be a bit down to be frank. I'd theorize that like myself they're all worried and stressed out about Wrestlemania, this is make or break time for an awful lot of us, this show could send some of us to heights we could have never imagined....or it could end in heart ache. We're feeling the pressure. You know what though? I guarantee you that when they hit the ring, be it Assassin, Sergio Griffon, Simmons, Hansen, Edge, anyone of them, that the moment they hit the ring all of that nervousness flies out of the window and every single one of them will give the match absolutely everything they have. They're all out to steal the show.
There's been some humor backstage though, Assassin is still a straight-edge virgin, Ryan Simmons is still an offensive cross-dresser and the Texas Rattlesnake, Stone Cold Steve Austin himself has been backstage at a lot of the events. Steve appears to be going through a rough period in his personal life at the moment but he's just as good humored and entertaining as ever. His banter with 'Taker and Shawn is legendary. He's an assett to have backstage. As for a return......I don't know. Steve is pretty much finished with the business as far as I can tell but in wrestling one can never say never. Lord knows the fans would go absolutely ape-shit.
I wanna give a brief honorable mention to a guy called Jason Cooper by the way. Trust me, this guy is the shit. The dude has gone from more brands than Jimmy freaking Fatal (who is STILL a talented bloke imo) so he's never been given his time to shine but from what I've seen this guys got talent. I watched some of his TNA work which somehow got lost in the clusterfuck that is iMPACT but was impressive nonetheless. He's not a spot monkey who no-sells big moves like 99.9% of the X-Division this guy combines these flashy moves with a bit of ring savvy and an entertaining persona. From his mic work to his blogs, the guy has got undoubted charisma. Not to mention that he's a genuinely nice guy who's just been waiting for his chance to shine. I have no doubt that when he gets his shot after 'Mania he'll be a star. Who knows, this time next year I could be sitting here typing about Cooper/Hardy at 'Mania 26...never say never.
I've not much else to tell you my friends, I'm typing to you all from the magic of wireless internet in the back seat of a rental car, squeezed between the ample sized Morten Hansen and Suffering, Sergio Griffon having somehow commandeered the front seat while John Morrison takes the wheel. A diverse group to be sure. Travelling down this road gets lonely sometimes but having your wrestling brothers around you makes all of the difference. Be it Joe, Morten, Shane, I don't know where I'd be without them all. They keep me grounded, they keep me safe and despite all of the problems I've caused and had this year they've stood beside me and got me through it. I will forever be in debt to these guys and most of the others backstage, we really have to each other going as we cruise to the next show at 70 miles an hour. Wrestling is indeed an interesting business when 6'5 foot muscleheads (and not so 6'5 muscleheads) depend on each other for their emotional well-being.
I must away for now my friends, I'm hearing grumblings about the nearest grease bucket.....I must locate the nearest place one can obtain a nice healthy wrap. Tortilla bread = Life.
Later,
Jeff
Sorry it's a vid guys, if anyone could tell em how to get iTunes music onto her that'd be helpful lol. Enjoy
This is just a simple gif I made of Assassin's finisher - Assassination. The second time round is me doing it to Sergio Griffon on SvR 09.
How's it going everybody, Bryan Alvarez back again with you and here with a review of WWE's big PPV from this past Sunday, the Royal Rumble. Now straight off the bat, I have to say this is one of the strongest shows I've seen from the company in such a long time. My inbox has been full of reader feedback to the show, and I'm still struggling to pick out anything negative.
Nice to see WWE's production values aren't being hampered by the economic downturn as a side note, the opening video was as spectacular as ever, no-one can touch WWE in this department in my opinion.
The opening tag match....great match, wrong finish. I wrote in my preview about how Rock has made noises about being in this tandem with Foley again, and it showed in places, but apart from that, these four worked very well. However, where my qualm comes is with the vets going over. Credit to WWE, Rhodes and DiBiase got in some very solid offense throughout, and were made to look strong, but for Rock to kick out of the DDT...wrong move, I think, if WWE really wants to get these young guys over they should've had one kick out of either the Rock Bottom or whatever Foley does these days. I personally don't see where WWE are going after this, unless they're planning the old partner breakup. A Rock heel turn would be something fresh, although Vince bottled it a while back. (2 1/4 *)
I wasn't too sure about the Shane/Nitro promo but the one after that really blew me away. I'm not usually one for WWE having long promos on PPV's because that's what RAW's for, building up the angles, but this was well done. As I've said, I'm not sure where this Jeff angle is going, but this really got the fans behind him. Primal was great playing the antagonist as well, top marks to both guys here.
Simmons and Mysterio...I really enjoyed this, these two had some great chemistry in the ring and I wouldn't be surprised to see something between the two after WrestleMania. The injury angle was nicely done, something WWE haven't done in a long time and it certainly gives them tons of options concerning Primal and the Intercontinental Title. (3*)
Santino's really finding his niche in WWE, his promos are standing out even more now WWE are moving towards this much 'darker' vibe. The stable tease with Orton was well done as well, although not overly played so that the audience suspected the involvement later on.
Assasain and Regal had a really good match, Regal's influence in the ring really told against the youngster who, in my estimation, really made a name for himself here. The No DQ angle was done nicely, again not overplayed by WWE and thus made effective, and the post-match angle, with the punt...really good work, a real sense of development between Assasain and Orton. (3*)
Forxx cutting himself in a promo? I was a little uncomfortable with the use of a knife in a promo, especially with the self-harm undertones but it certainly struck a chord. Suffering's promo that followed...short, effective and very interesting.
Next match was Primal and Jeff Hardy, solid match between the two as expected, not a great deal different from their feud from last year but that's not a bad thing at all. Thing I really liked here though was, watching on TV, hearing J.R really out over Jeff's conflicting emotions which is what this angle is all about, no-one can get an angle over like Jim Ross and I hope WWE really run with this one.(2 1/2*)
I think the next segment may contain the most visual image you will ever see in a WWE ring. I also think it's one that will be replayed for years to come. I'd heard Shane and Suffering had been planning an angle but I wasn't too sure what, I was expecting nothing more than the verbals they had. It's a testament to Vince McMahon, though, that they had the balls to go through with what they did. I've seen article after article from outraged parents, censorship groups and anti-wrestling bodies condemning this angle, and that's just what WWE like - people talking about their product, I got no end of texts within seconds about it, Vinny was marking out considerably. And that's what this did. The image of a man being hung, his blood pouring onto a welcoming human being below, is almost biblical in its' presentation. I think a lot of people are comparing it to the Raven crucifix angle in ECW many years ago. This was that, multiplied by 100. It's one of those moments that transcends generations, and it instantly made both Suffering and Shane the hottest commodities in the business today. One can't forget the involvement of the young Sergio Griffon, yet more talent elevation by WWE, but the two main protaganists could well eclipse the main event at WrestleMania, and that's saying something.
The next match was basically eclipsed as a result and I like that, Ross playing it up fantastically once again, the involvement of Flair and Steamboat was good as well. Morrison and Nebraska as tag champs with an attitude? A good choice, WWE are building the tag division back up towards its glory days in late 2005 I believe, there's an angle brewing somewhere with the legends and these young guns too. (2*)
Vince as the frustrated half-owner = buys. I'm liking Kane's new character as well, the maniac returning, he and Forxx could really develop something if given time although I'm yet to be convinced of its worth as a WrestleMania angle/match.
Primal and Mysterio for the IC Title was exactly what you want from a big man/little man match, Rey allowed plenty of offense but Primal really allowed to show what he's capable of, something I think we need to see more of, and probably will soon. Whether Mysterio remains in the title picture...I'm not sure because of the Primal/Simmons deal but we'll see, WWE have more sense than to under-use a talent like him. (3*)
Three promos from three men who are up there with the best these days, Cena, Orton and Nightmare, and I was impressed by all of them. I really like where WWE have gone with Cena, a lot more serious than before the heel turn, got the point of being a hunted man across well. Orton...not much more to say, the man is on such form these days he's pretty much untouchable with a microphone. Nightmare? Thought WWE might make more of his on-screen return, save it for his Rumble entrance but no, a tease with Vince. I've not heard about any plans for a match, but who knows.
The Elimination Chamber is one of those matches which, if done right, can make every man in the match. This certainly did that. Last time out, at SummerSlam, WWE made the top guys but neglected MVP, arguably the one most in need of a push. Here, everyone got the rub. The inclusion of Michaels made the in-ring stuff incredibly watchable, and really brought the crowd to life at points, his energy in the ring, at his age, always makes great matches. Kane and Forxx further advanced their angle, which I liked, and having Kane in the final three really adds to the credibility he's been recieving lately. Undertaker was fantastic in his role, but his elimination by Orton....there's an angle waiting there, so I believe. Orton was once again fantastic, and Cena was booked correctly. I know of many people in the industry who have critiscised Cena recently, but I've got nothing but praise for his performance here. He'll run with the ball to WrestleMania, no doubt. Overall, a fantastic match, some brutal spots. A real MOTY contender. (4 1/4*)
The Orton and Taker angle was well done, further adding to their interaction in the Chamber, and we finally got the mini-payoff with Assasain joining forces with Orton. Time will tell whether the plan is to simply keep Orton and Cena in a program alone, but I for one wouldn't mind seeing Undertaker involved somehow. WrestleMania 25 will also feature Steve Austin in some form so it seems, I fully expect the angle taking him out of the Rumble and being replaced with HBK to be followed up on.
Austin/Michaels? I'll leave that one hanging.
And then we ended with the Royal Rumble, a match that is impossible to screw up, no matter how hard one can try. Here...WWE did very well, so many stories coming out of the match as there always is, a lot of stuff to follow up on. HBK's non-elimination is a nice angle and I'm sure we'll see something develop there. Batista returning was a great boost to WWE's upper-level roster, a fresh face on the scene, he wasn't allowed to stick around long and I think that makes sense, no need to rush him into the title picture just yet. More advancement between Orton/Undertaker, really interesting, at this moment in time it seems like we'll get that, or some variation perhaps involving this new stable, down the line. Assasain's involvement and the steel chair certainly gives WWE something to run with as far as Undertaker's revenge goes. More elevation for Suffering too, lasting I think the longest in the match. And Mickey Rourke? Quite obviously WWE's seemingly now annual celebrity angle heading towards WrestleMania. It's a good choice, Vince is hooking his wagon to a movie that's EVERYWHERE right now, and I think Nightmare needs this kind of match at WrestleMania, if proposed angles are followed through.(4 1/2*)
The winner? The right choice. A few people have been moaning about having Orton/Cena at WrestleMania again, but in my eyes there's no-one hotter in the company than Orton. Of course...there's lots of time to go between now and April, and No Way Out is a few weeks away, so Vince could dramatically change his plans. But for me, Orton and Cena at WrestleMania 25 is as perfect a situation they could hope for right now.
That's all from me for this week, I'll be back after Monday's RAW to give you my review of the show, discuss where WWE are going next and bring you all the latest news from the comapny. Feel free to drop me any feedback, and I'll see you next time.
This is a great video! It does contain some coarse language but it's all for a good reason. Trust me, if you saw him you'd hate him lol
Sorry I didn't do this earlier guys, I didn't even think to do it lol. Well here goes...
So there I was. Backstage at the Royal Rumble. The place was buzzing. Young stars such as myself equally anticipant as the more experienced members of the locker room such as 'Taker. I decided to catch up with a few guys I hadn't seen for a while due to my time on ECW. I first talked with Assassin and wished him well as we are both still good mates. As we bade each other farewell I was stopped by Ryan Simmons who gave me a few tips for the upcoming Rumble match. As we parted company I decided to go and do a few simple stretches and warm up before my segment. While doing this I was approached by Suffering and we went over some last minute details of our segment. He also confirmed no one knew what was going to happen or that I was even going to be involved. As he left and we wished each other luck the Rumble was starting. You could hear "Let it Rock" loud and clear backstage and it was a fantastic moment in my young career.
I then went to go and watch the first few matches of the PPV alone but was shocked to see Forxx sitting at the TV. I decided it was best not to bother him and so said nothing as I sat down and began watching. Soon enough my mate Assassin's match versus William Regal was on. No one could have seen what was coming at the climax of that match even after his and Randy's brilliant promo.
Forxx had left by this stage to finish his warm up (I presume lol) and so it was just me watching the match on this particular TV. Still shocked I remembered I had a segment to do yet. I dashed into the locker room to grab my baseball bat and just had time to get down near the ramp as Michael Shane's music was fading out. It was an eager few moments for me. My first segment at a major PPV event. I suddenly thought about what I was about to do and for the first time actual fear set in. Were there going to be consequences for this next act? I pushed the thoughts out of my head and raced down the ramp to smash Michael Shane's head open. While it may seem odd it was an exhilirating experience, as I picked up the cable and hung Shane 8 feet above the ring and watched Suffering bathe in his blood.
As I headed backstage after the segment I had a million emotions running through me. Suffering caught up and told me I did great out there. I was thankful but still unsure. I headed to the showers where I decided I'd calm my nerves and conscience with the hot water. It helped a bit. I caught up with Assassin not long after and we both congratulated the other on their respective pushes. We said our farewells again and departed. I met up with Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase who were still sour about their loss to The Rock 'n Sock Connection. We sat down and watched the Elimination Chamber as a group. It was truly a brilliant match, no question about that.
Then...It was time for...The ROYAL RUMBLE!!
I was as nervous as I had ever been. Time seemed to fly from the beginning of the match until my entry. I vaguely remember Suffering wishing me luck but thats it. Suddenly I was in the ring wrestling my heart out. I decided to bring a lil' bit of ECW to the match as I would not be returning for a while. The table proved to be my downfall, Kane throwing me through it perfectly shattering the wood. It went as perfectly as I could've hoped. I went backstage and had another shower. I was out in time to see the end of the match as everyone was watching it backstage. A long sigh swept the room when HBK was eliminated then a deathly silence ascended when 'Taker was thrown over the top rope. Of course no one was too displeased at Randy winning it, he had a brilliant match.
All in all it was a truly spectacular, obscenely wonderful PPV. Pushes were given, alliances made and championships retained. I was pleased at my performance and the fact that I had been made a part of a powerful team in the WWE. Learning under Suffering will no doubt be a hard and gruelling task, but no doubt a rewarding one as well. It shall be a fantastic experience, with titles surely soon to come.
Congratulations to All on a great night. Get well rested Ryan Simmons, we will no doubt meet sometime in the future and I wan you at your peak when that time comes.
Again, well done to all...
-Sergio Griffon
Sorry for the interruption last time guys, I had to tend to a few things for Raw this week. Now, where were we last? That's right, after being congratulated by some fellow superstars after my match I headed back to the showers to have a quick wash, to remove all the sweat my body was producing. After I had fully cleaned I got changed into some casual clothes as I wasn't going to appear on screen for a little longer and decided to watch a bit more of The Royal Rumble by myself. When I turned on the TV it was upto the Suffering/Shane segment, I started to watch it, not knowing of any plans and then was shocked as I saw my close friend Sergio Griffon appear, after hitting Michael Shane. Serge hadn't told me anything about this and I started to grin, happy that he was getting a "push".
As the segment finished I decided to go find someone to watch the Chamber match with. After a while of searching I found Jeff Hardy and Mort (Primal) watching it and asked if I could join in. They agreed and I sat down next to them, Mort offered me a beer but I declined and we begun to watch the Chamber match. Another great match and I have to say this is an early candidate for Match Of The Year, every superstar put in 110% effort and it resulted in a great match. I didn't have time to sit around however as my next segment was up next as I went to find Randy and Taker. I found them quite easily and we started to film the segment straight away. Suprisingly, I felt much more comfortable and relaxed this time, maybe it was because it was my second promo or the fact that I was working with two of the "top dogs" in the business.
After everything ran smoothly I casually started to head to the "gorilla" position, taking my time as I was to enter very late in the Rumble match. I arrived just as Joe was heading out to the ring and decided to hang around with people that were there. The time seemed to fly and before I knew it, it was time for me to enter the Rumble match. As I stepped through the curtain and saw all the superstars currently in the ring a rush of excitement ran through me and I raced down to the ring. The next 10-20 minutes you should all know what happens so I won't go through that.
After I arrived backstage, I decide to stay around for a bit with Randy and celebrate, meeting up with several other stars again and then Sergio for the first time since I saw him earlier on in the night. We talked for a solid few minutes and I congratulated him on becoming a member of the Gathering and he congratulated me on becoming apart of The Legacy. I then left him, saying goodbye and then decided to have an early night as I said see ya to everyone else and then head back to my hotel...
That's it for now guys, until you see me next time...farewell,
Assassin.
The Rumble- Typically a good one.
What about the Gathering segment though? How can that be called classy or even intriguing? Showering in another man's blood as he hangs 8 feet above the ring dying? Well let me tell you something. You don't HAVE to call it classy or intriguing. You can call that neseccary. Michael Shane spat in Suffering's face. What did he expect? Suffering to just walk away? No. Thats not how we do things in the Gathering.
I will admit to having been approached by Suffering prior to the event asking if I wanted the chance at glory. Naturally I accepted, knowing full well that it was by no means going to be glamorous. In fact, since it was Suffering talking to me I knew it would be the exact opposite. I have no regrets in taking Suffering up on his offer.
Now onto the other Gathering member. CM Punk. In my opinion he shouldn't even be in our little 'group.' He prances around with Mickie James like he has no care in the world. But why? Suffering is a fantastic competitor and under his guidance, I will be as well. But Punk? Come on. He didn't even have the guts to follow through with our plan to take out Michael Shane, no, he left me to do the dirty work. I didn't mind as it gave me a chance to show my loyalty to Suffering. Trust me though, soon enough Punk will be out of favour with Suffering and will ultimately be left on his own.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not the greatest competitor ever to roam the Earth. But there is no shame in being eliminated from the Rumble by a rampant Kane is there? In my limited time in the WWE I have achieved more than Punk in his entire career. I am younger, fitter, smarter and more athletic than CM Punk and will ultimately achieve more than him in my career.
Enough has been said about him though, you all know where I stand with him now and we will all get along in the Gathering anyway, because that is how the greatest of teams conquer all. By working together, no matter what we're doing, be it hospitalizing Michael Shane and bathing in his blood or simply winning titles we'll do it together.
The gathering are the greatest stable in wrestling history and will dominate this business until there is no one left to break.
Sergio
That wasn't as good as my last one but I tried. feedback would be nice cheers guys.
CHANGES!!!!!
FFS. I really shouldn't show myself being angry but Vince has just changed BACK those changes i talked about he made yesterday, after yesterday learning the new lines with Ric. Ric isn't pleased either but seems to hide it better than me. I'm just venting, i always get frustrated and on edge before big nights and THIS is a big night in my career.
Michael Shane as a character, like all good ones, is an exaggerated form of myself. Just like Cena, Austin, Ric and even Randy, we all have a little of ourselves in our characters.
I'm like to think I'm confident rather than arrogant, nobody else agrees with me, that i do respect this business and the legends of it but equally, i want my own chance to shine, something any self respecting Legend would actually agree with me on. Hogan doesn't, but he can f*ck off.
But until last week you didn't see the other side to Michael Shane - the one who ISN'T confident, the one who doubts so much.
On nights like this, my mind is full of what if's. What if i mess this up.. what it i forget what I'm supposed to do, what if i mess up. No matter how many years go by, i ALWAYS think that. When you're stood in that Gorilla position, thousands of fans on the other side of that curtain, Vince McMahon blaring in your ear last minute advice.... i cant tell you the feeling, it's like standing on the edge of a cliff ready to jump or be pushed by the boss. The heart beats faster, the blood pounds in the ears... and then your music hits. Somehow, like when Festus used to hear that bell... everything changes. There's no doubt anymore... there's no fear or nervousness, because when that music hits I'm no longer me.... I'm The New Generation Nature Boy, I'm Michael Shane. And I'm the best in the World.
But for now... I'm stuck with the what if's.
Got to the arena, straight into the locker room, there's Assassin playing SvR with Sergio Griffon, the new kid of ECW. I like him, reminds me of a young Ricky Steamboat in that athletic style and martial arts influence, maybe a little of me. He's got something.
There's a HUGE tray of hotdogs on a table over to one side, that can only mean Steve Austin and ANOTHER unmentionable guy are here already, i haven't seen them yet though. There's cables on the floor, Joey Nebraska tells me they're filing some kind of angle in here, i haven't even seen a full run sheet yet, i ask somebody to find me one.... seems its under the hotdogs and I'm not touching those things.
Open my bag, out comes a suit i was asked to bring, WWE don't do costumes except ring and backstage gear - no suits department, its the same one i wore when we filmed a segment on Wednesday with Ashley and Venus Vulu, nice continuity.
Lunch time, then we'll be out to get final word on what we're doing from Vince and the cerative team.
OK, lets have a go at this blog thing shall we.
The Rumble is just a few days away, everyone is primed, the locker room is buzzing, the hopes and nerves of young superstars in their first Rumble are at an explosive level. Myself included. I enter the Rumble one of the youngest and perhaps premature title winners ever, albeit a Tag title.
I've been in this business all of 6months and already i've learned a great deal. Who to respect, who you can have a joke with, and who you're never going to really get along with. My career has gotten off to the best possible start, a win on debut with Assassin, then being selected in Ric Flair's team at Survior Series. Soon after I was drafted to ECW where I won the Tag team titles 2 weeks in. I am especially grateful to my partner Super Crazy, who's experience has helped no end during my time on ECW.
Onto the Rumble match itself. It will obviously be a huge spectacle, as always. Anything and everything can happen and will probably happen. For a young lad such as myself, stepping into the ring to compete against the likes of Suffering, who I've idolised for the past few years, to Jeff Hardy who has been so successful in recent times.
Then comes the prospect of winning. I am by no means the favourite- but how can you pick a favourite in a match like this? Men have won from number 1 and number 30 and anywhere inbetween. Anybody can win.
The Road to WrestleMania is what every kid dreams of whilst growing up as a wrestling fan. I was not even born when the first WM was broadcast and to possibly be competing in one is certainly my every dreams coming true. Will I get there? Only time will tell.
No one is safe, no one is a favourite or an underdog in the Rumble. It will truly be a match of the greatest splendour.
Until next time,
Sergio.
Feedback would be most appreciated guys.
This is my mate owning a kid from our school- believe it or not, in the same year as us lol!
We only did it cos he's a Liverpool fan ;)
It was HIS idea. He was adamant that we did it so we did it- hard. He threw up the painkillers lol.
School is ridiculously boring nowdays haha
I guess to open i should really say what this blog type column thing will be all about. Simply this will be my weekly thoughts on anything and everything, usually VWWE.
Sometimes i'll speak as Michael Shane... usually you'll hear what i really think... though is there a difference? the Michael Shane you see on TV is simply an exaggerated form of the Michael Shane you see in the street. I expect it will at times be controversial, you wont agree with some things i say and frankly, it will be littered with Paramore references with the occasional Coldplay one.
There will be a big Bollywood dance number at the end of next weeks as well.
So... here we go, number one. Or maybe more if we count the archive of the Mick is Blog thing i did some years ago
As for the name, after thinking of going with the boring "Mick is Blog", "The Dirt Sheet" that really doesn't feel right or the unlikely "My Bloggy Wog" i'm still undecided what to call it so for now, this column is simply "The unamed blog"
