  • March Snow Totals

    • From: David_Aldrich
    • Description:

Here is my latest video update.  Please feel free to give us your snow totals, as they come in.  Some of you had a minor snow accumulation from Sunday morning.  Here's your chance to give us that amount, too.

Enjoy, but stay safe.  This storm should begin in the Philly Metro around dinnertime  4 to 7 PM.

Heaviest snow rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour may fall between 9 PM and 2 AM Monday.  Winds gusting to 35 to 45 mph will create POOR VISIBILITY and BLOWING and DRIFTING on Monday morning.  Temperatures will be near 31 degrees at midnight, dropping into the 20s all day.  Wind chills should range from 5 to 15 degrees on Monday as well.

  • 7 to 12"+ Snow By Monday After

    • From: David_Aldrich
    • Description:

Tonight, a mix of rain, sleet and snow will be coming up from the South. A trace to 0.5 inches of accumulation, I think, is possible.  In the big picture, this is no big deal.

If you wait long enough, it will come.  I know that is not the quote from the Field of Dreams movie, but it is close enough.  Snow lovers have been patient.  That is for sure.

Look for a significant snow storm to affect the Delaware Valley late Sunday into Monday morning.  Flurries and snow showers could even linger into Monday afternoon.

7 to 12 + inches of snow is what I am expecting for Philly Metro, Trenton, Wilmington and Points North and West (Allentown & Reading may only receive 7 inches).  If Philly got 15 inches, it would not surprise me.

Further to the south and east, (Dover to Millville to Wrightstown to Atlantic City), I think will pick up 12 to 17 + inches of snow.  If some areas in South Jersey picked up 20 inches, it would not surprise me.

The key here is to prepare now.  If you need a shovel, go buy one.  If you need supplies, go get them.  This storm has the potential of beating out the February 2006 storm, when Philly received a foot of snow.

Good news.  This snow will be out of here by late Monday and the clean-up can begin.

TONIGHT:  Clouds thicken, rain, sleet, snow mix develops from the South.
      Trace to 0.5 inches.

Lows:  25 to 30 degrees from suburb to city.

Winds:  NE 5 - 15 mph, gusts to 25 mph.

SUNDAY:  Mix ends early.  Otherwise, gray skies.  Snow returns at night.

High:  37 to 41 degrees from suburb to city.

Winds:  NNE 5 - 15 mph, gusts to 20 mph.

SUNDAY NIGHT:  Snow storm begins around 7 PM from the South.

MONDAY:    7 to 12 inches + for Philly and N.W. suburbs12 to 17"+ Dover & South Jersey (Wrightstown, Millville, Atlantic City)

Heavy snow, windy, gusts around 30 mph

Midnight high around 31 degrees and falling.

Temperatures in the 20s by day, dropping to the lower to mid teens by Tuesday morning.

      TUESDAY:  Cold sun.

      High around 28 degrees

  • Sunshine, Low Humidity Today

    • From: David_Aldrich
    • Description:

High pressure anchored over the Eastern Great Lakes will keep the sun shining today.  There is a weak disturbance off the Carolina coast that could bring a shower to the New Jersey Shore by Thursday.

Otherwise, expect plenty of sunshine and low humidity today.  Highs near 78 degrees.

  • Clouds & Sun, Windy Today

    • From: David_Aldrich
    • Description:

Look for a mix of clouds & sun today.  An isolated snowflake will be possible, particularly NORTH and WEST this morning due to the instability on Lake Erie.  The instability is highest between now and 10 AM.  A bitter cold start is expected this morning as wind chills start in the teens and single-digits.

Sunshine is expected on Saturday with an increase in high clouds Saturday afternoon.

On Sunday, a fast-moving storm from Canada, known as an Alberta Clipper, will be moving into the Delaware and Lehigh Valleys.

Sunday morning...say...7 AM to 10 AM looks favorable for some wet snow.  I like the wording of "wet snow mix" because some SLEET and RAIN could mix in as well initially.  The "accumulation potential" looks REALLY LOW to me.  Right now, I am thinking 0.5 inches or LESS area-wide.  I will get another look at it on Saturday, though.

FRIDAY:  Mix of clouds & sun, cold, windy, gusts around 40 mph.

High:  30 to 34 degrees from suburb to city.

      Winds:  W 15 - 30 mph, gusts to 40 mph.

TONIGHT:  Evening clouds break, clearing overnight, breezy,
wind chills in the teens by morning.

Lows:  16 to 23 degrees from suburb to city.

      Winds:  W 10 - 20 mph, gusts to 25 mph.

  • Mix N.W. Early, Warmer Today

    • From: David_Aldrich
    • Description:

With the approach of a weak cold front (which will eventually turn into our next warm front), a few showers North and West
of Pottstown may fall this morning.  Sleet pellets, raindrops or even snowflakes will be possible.  The key here is that
any precipitation today will be light and focused North and West of Pottstown.

The warmest day of the week is still on Friday.  Gusts 40 to 50 mph (quite windy).  Temperatures around 63 degrees.  Rain moves in Friday afternoon.

THURSDAY:  Light Mix Early North & West, otherwise Mix of Sun & Clouds, Warm.

Highs:  50 to 54 degrees from suburb to city.

      Winds:  SSW 5 - 15 mph.

TONIGHT:  Increasing high clouds, not as cold, breezy late.

Lows:  34 to 39 degrees from suburb to city.

      Winds:  S 5 - 15 mph.

FRIDAY:  Hazy sun early, Increasing clouds, P.M. Rain Showers, Windy.  Gusts 40 to 50 mph.

High:  around 63 degrees.  Warmer south.

SATURDAY:  Sun & Clouds, Mix Late

Midnight high around 49 degrees and falling.

Well, this is it.  My last Sunday broadcast on Fox 29 will be tonight at 10 O'Clock.  It's been a good run...almost like a college education.  I want to thank each and every one of you for making it possible.  I have more information that I want to share, but I will wait for a more appropriate time.  After all, my last day of employment at Fox 29 is not until Friday, October 2nd.

Keep checking the status of www.davidaldrich.com over the next couple of days.  Right now, it just shows you my Fox 29 bio.  But that will change, too.

      Now for the weather...

Sunset tonight is at 6:50 PM for the start of Yom Kippur.

You may want to secure any umbrellas or patio deck furniture that may be susceptible to the wind.  Why ?  Because...

Windy conditions will move in, especially Monday afternoon, as this storm system pulls away.  Note:  It will not be very windy when you wake-up tomorrow morning.  But those gusts should be increasing by midday. Wind gusts Monday around 40 to 45 mph still seems reasonable to me.

Temperatures will climb back into the mid to upper 70s by Monday at 3 P.M.

Wind gusts on Tuesday should be near 35 mph with highs only in the mid-60s.

It may be time to check your furnace, as temperatures by Thursday, October 1st may struggle to reach the lower 60s for highs, as a deep upper-level Canadian low sits on top of the Eastern Great Lakes for several days.

      _______________

TONIGHT:  (Stray showers fade) Clearing Skies, Patchy Fog Late

Lows:  52 to 57 degrees from suburb to city.

      Winds:  W to SW 5 - 10 mph

MONDAY:  Sun to Clouds, Windy, P.M. Shower.  (40 percent chance)

Highs:  73 to 77 degrees from suburb to city.

      Winds:  SSW 10 - 25 mph, Gusts 40 to 45 mph.

TUESDAY:  Mix of Sun & Clouds, Breezy, Gusts to 35 mph, & Cool.

      High:  near 66 degrees

Sorry, Ben Franklin (his idea), but I think we should split the difference by 1 half hour and leave it alone for good.

      Yes or no.

      Time for an unscientific poll.

  • The MANE Event

    • From: Jamie_Shupak
    • Description:

Thank you to Sue Serio for the blog title -- Here's the deal: I'm heading to Lionville, Chester County tomorrow for Firehouse Friday and because Sue is miss super creative - she thought of the "mane" event. Get it?! I know, she's the best.

So we've got a very exciting and busy weekend ahead - never too early to think bout the traffic implications... so tomorrow night we have a Phillies game and a Grateful Dead concert, so south philly will be buzzing. I'm going to one of those events but I won't tell ya which one - you'll have to guess :) I can tell ya one thing for sure -- I'm taking the subway there! Trains and buses, obviously :)

Then on Sunday, as you know, it's the Broad Street Run starting at 8:30am. I won't be giving you an alternate to drive around this one, cause I'm hoping you'll come out and cheer myself and the other 25,000 runners taking part in the 10 mile race. Still not sure if I'm totally ready... but guess I'll have to be.

And don't forget if you'd like traffic tips before anyone else, then you can follow me on twitter @ JamieShupak

      Sunny & Cooler Monday

High pressure takes center stage on Monday, allowing for bright sun to shine from start to finish.  Some high clouds will advance Monday night.

With the approach of a warm front on Tuesday, there is a remote chance we get a passing shower Tuesday afternoon or night.  No big deal.

The real story by midweek will be the warmth.  Temperatures spreading between 66 and 70 degrees seems reasonable to me on Wednesday.  The record high is 66 degrees, set back 122 years ago, when Grover Cleveland was President for the first time.  I fully expect we will break this number.  Some rain and even a thunderstorm will be possible late Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning.

TONIGHT:  Starry skies, Full "Snow" Moon.
Lows:  25 to 30 degrees from suburb to city.

      Winds:  NW to W 10 - 15 mph.

      MONDAY:  Sunny, cooler.
Highs:  44 to 48 degrees from suburb to city.

      Winds:  WNW 5 - 10 mph

TUESDAY:  Partly cloudy, P.M. brief rain shower possible, but not likely.
      Highs:  around 53 degrees.

WEDNESDAY:  Clouds to Sun, Record Warmth
      Highs:  near 70 degrees.

Record high for Philly on 2/11 is 66 degrees.

  • The Psychology of Weather

    • From: David_Aldrich
    • Description:

      The Psychology of Weather

For whatever reason, the mind perceives, processes and interprets information differently.  For example, 69 degrees is not as warm as 70.  79 degrees is not as warm as 80.  And 89 degrees is not as hot as 90.

This line of thinking is used quite often in marketing as well when something is priced at $ 19.99 versus $ 20 bucks.  The former seems to be a lot cheaper, even though it is only one penny.

Which leads me to ask you...what do you think ?  Below are some examples of "blown forecasts."  In your opinion, which is worst ?  And why ?

To over forecast the high temperature by 3 degrees or under forecast the high temperature by 3 degrees.

      Example 1:

      Actual high:  86 degrees
      Forecast 1:  89 degrees
      Forecast 2:  83 degrees

Which is worst, in your opinion ?  And why ?

To over forecast the amount of snow by 3 inches or under forecast the amount of snow by 3 inches.

      Example 2:

      Actual measurement:  4 inches
      Forecast 1:  1 inch
      Forecast 2:  7 inches

Which is worst, in your opinion ?  And why ?

      Example 3

To forecast rain and get nothing.  Or to forecast nothing in terms of precipitation and suddenly, you get a shower or thunderstorm.

Obviously, we all strive to be as accurate as possible.  But given three states to cover and dozens of counties from the mountains to the Jersey Shore, there is and will always be some form of variation.

      Thanks for your input !

      Sincerely,

      David

P.S.  I am reminded by the old joke I used to hear in Rochester, NY.  The man on the phone calls to complain that he is shovelling 6 inches of partly cloudy off of his driveway.

You can blame that on lake effect.  Laughing

    • Description:

Tomorrow morning I'm taking my 3rd 'Toyota Prius One Tank Trip' to Doylestown, Pennsylvania - what some call the cultural hub of Bucks County. I'll be live from a delicious bagel shop there, Bagel Barrell, from 5-9am. But we're not just talking about food and where to eat, I'll also be showing you some cool places to take the kids, interesting places for adults to check out, and of course - an in depth look at the famous three castles. They were built between 1908 and 1916 - but wait til you see what they house today!

As we've been doing the last 2 trips, I'll also show you just how long (in distance and time) it will take you to get to Doylestown from wherever you live. The most important thing to remember though, of course, is that you can get back and forth on just one tank of gas! Can't beat that!

If you'd like to make a suggestion for a future one tank trip, either message me - or fill out the form under the Good Day tab of www.myfoxphilly.com

      First, The Forecast:

A cold front is slipping through this morning, but there aren’t many showers with it, just a spritz or two.

Sunshine takes over today, and we end up with a pretty nice afternoon, with a high of 83.

Starting tomorrow, the weather gets unsettled again, with rain possible after midnight tonight, and even more likely later in the day, as our front moves back north as a warm front.

More problems with the weather on Saturday, as Tropical Storm Danny moves close by.  By Saturday, it could be a Category 1 Hurricane.

      The Tropics:

Tropical Storm Danny is gaining a bit of strength in an area  just northeast of the Bahamas.  This storm looks like it could be on a similar track to the one that Hurricane Bill took last weekend, a path in between Bermuda and the east coast of the United States.

Similar, but not the same.  Computer models have this storm potentially coming a bit closer to the east coast of the United States.   It won’t be as big or as powerful as Bill, but it will have similar effects at the shore on Saturday.

This is a shame, since we’re coming up on  the last weekend of August.  Rip currents and heavy surf….and the chance of thunderstorms for all of us, especially on Saturday.

You can follow Danny right here on our website, by using the trusty Tropical Tracker…all season long.

      Today’s Trivia:

Today is Mother Teresa Day, marking her birth on August 27, 1910, in Skopje, Macedonia. The Catholic nun founded the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, which cared for the destitute in Calcutta. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and died in Calcutta in 1997. Her birth name was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.

It is that time of year again...time for our bloggers to take a guess on who you think will be this year's Monster Hurricane.

The object ?  To pick one or two storm name(s) that you think will be remembered for its strength and/or its destruction.  Only the storm names that are retired are considered "winners"----of course, I use this word loosely.

Recall, Gustav, Ike, and Paloma were retired in 2008 and replaced with Gonzalo, Isaias and Paulette, starting in the year 2014.

The start of the Hurricane Season is June 1st, nearly two weeks away.  Below is the 2009 list of Atlantic storm names.  Enjoy.  There are no prizes, no mugs----just bragging rights.

      Good luck.

      Atlantic Names 2009

      70 degrees BEFORE Valentine's Day ?

      ______________________________

      70 degrees BEFORE Valentine's Day ?

Is that EVEN possible for Philly ?  Why, yes it is.  The best chance of this happening will be mid to late next week, namely Wednesday or Thursday, February 11th or 12th.  Even if we don't hit 70 degrees officially, temperatures in the 60s will sound awfully nice to some who are suffering from the winter blues.

Oh sure, it is a long way off...about a week away.  And it is a prediction dependent on several key pieces falling into place.  For example, we would need a strong Bermuda high off the coast.  Midwest storms would have to race to the Eastern Great Lakes, thereby pulling warm, humid air up to the Delaware Valley.

We hit 70 degrees on the 12th of February as recent as 1999.   That is the record high for 2/12.

The record high for February 11th is a mere 66 degrees, set back in 1887.  This number could be in jeopardy as well.

      Stay tuned.

      Sunny & Cooler Monday

The real story by midweek will be the warmth.  Temperatures spreading between 66 and 70 degrees seems reasonable to me on Wednesday.  The record high is 66 degrees, set back 122 years ago, when Grover Cleveland was President for the first time.  I fully expect we will break this number.  Some rain and even a thunderstorm will be possible late Wednesday evening into early Thursday morning.

It’s almost spring, and we’re going into a weekend that promises rapid weather changes.

After a high of 50-degrees in Philly yesterday, we should zoom into the 60s this afternoon, ahead of a cold front.

A few peeks of sunshine this morning, then it’s increasing clouds and high winds this afternoon.   Rain begins late in the day, and lasts through the night, until the cold front is through before daylight dawns on Saturday.

Temperatures drop through the forties during the day tomorrow, and most of the day should be dry.

The next system is a secondary low that will form on the southern end of the stalled cold front, and move northeast along the coast Saturday night into Sunday.

And this is when things get interesting:  looks like a mix of precipitation is possible with some ice and sleet on Saturday night.  Sunday should see that precipitation change over to rain.

But since this second storm is still a few days away,  keep close to this web site for updated information all weekend long.

Lots of big events this weekend:   It’s the last weekend of ice skating at the Blue Cross River Rink on Penn’s Landing.   And, of course, Sunday is the first day of the fabulous Philadelphia Flower Show.   This year’s theme is:  “Bella Italia.”

As for me, I’m so happy that I’m going to be a part of the Girl Scouts celebration this Sunday at the National Constitution Center.

It’s the 75th Anniversary of the first Girl Scout Cookie Sale!

And yes, it happened right here in Philadelphia, in 1934.

We’re going to celebrate with a whole bunch of Girl Scouts by taking a bite out of an 8-foot, 75-pound Girl Scout cookie.  It’s being assembled this morning by a master chef from the Moshulu.   We can all take a bite on Sunday!

There will also be a Color Guard Flag Ceremony, games and other activities, and the best news of all:  it’s FREE!

It’s happening from 1 – 3 p.m. this Sunday at the National Constitution Center.

If you were ever a Girl Scout, are one, or even if you just like cookies, stop by!      There could even be a surprise or two….

    • Description:

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is announcing that DUI enforcement will be conducted by TEAM DUI police officers in many southeast Pennsylvania locations during the July 4th holiday period and subsequent dates.

Over the July 4th holiday period in 2008, statewide, there were 468 impaired driving related crashes resulting in 34 fatalities – the third deadliest holiday period of that year. This period includes the holiday weekend, as well as the weekends before and after the holiday.

Under PennDOT’s impaired driving program, police receive grant funds from PennDOT to pay the officers overtime for conducting DUI enforcement. Planned DUI checkpoints and patrols will include:

      Chester County

      July 2-4

      -        DUI patrols along Routes 30, 100 and 113.

      Montgomery County

      July 2-6

      -        DUI patrols along Route 611 in Abington and Upper Moreland townships.

      -        DUI patrols on Routes 63, 202, 309, 463, 663 and Sumneytown Pike in Hatfield, Montgomery,             Towamencin, Upper Gwynedd townships and Hatfield and Lansdale boroughs.

      -        Franconia Township, Lower Salford Township, Hatfield Township, and the Upper Perkiomen Police

      -        DUI patrols along Routes 1 and 30 in Lower Merion Township.

      July 10

      -        DUI checkpoint along Route 152 in Upper Dublin Township.

      July 17

      -        DUI checkpoint along Easton Road in Cheltenham Township.

There are DUI laws for boaters as well.  You can be arrested for DUI while operating any vehicle or boat if you are impaired to a point where you are incapable of safe operation regardless of any blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of alcohol and or drugs.

According to PennDOT statistics, there were 531 alcohol-related highway fatalities in Pennsylvania in 2008, about 36 percent of 1,468 total highway deaths in the state that year. In southeast Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties), there were 104 alcohol-related traffic fatalities in 2008, about 41 percent of the 252 total highway deaths in the region. • Cool Sun, High Clouds Monday

    • From: David_Aldrich
    • Description:

The sun returns on Monday, amidst a few high thin cirrus clouds.  Temperatures will struggle to reach the lower to mid 60s on Monday, under a northerly breeze.

With a stalled front off the Jersey shore, it is just a matter of time before some kind of tropical or subtropical development begins around Cuba.

Even the National Hurricane Center acknowledged this possibility today in a 2 PM discussion.

      You can read that here

Welcome to the party, pal !

      By the way...

I first mentioned this on-air on Mother's Day:

I still like our chances of seeing Tropical or Subtropical Storm Ana forming in the Gulf of Mexico (leaning toward Florida) mid to late this week (Tuesday to Thursday, May 19th - 21st).  It was a long-range forecast, but a BOLD prediction.

Suffice to say, "Ana" has the potential to ruin the second half of our Memorial Day Weekend plans with rain  (Sunday through Tuesday, May 24th to 26th).

      Stay tuned.

Warmer air (80s) moves back into the picture by Thursday and Friday of this week.

  • Rainy, Windy, Thunder Late Mon

    • From: David_Aldrich
    • Description:

Yes, the chance for a shower exists tonight from the storm system to our West.

However, outside of a brief shower or sprinkle tonight, I am expecting most of the action to hold off until daybreak Monday, as this system gradually fills-in areawide.

The rain on Monday will come with a nasty wind.  Gusts around 35 mph.

A FLOOD WATCH has been posted for the following counties:  CLICK HERE

The thunderstorm threat arrives late Monday afternoon and into the evening.

      55 to 59 degrees by 11 PM

  • Some Wet Snow Tonight, Sunny o

    • From: David_Aldrich
    • Description:

A weak storm system is passing to our south.  The center of low pressure is actually in North Carolina.  But coupled with some upper air dynamics between 5,000 and 12,000 feet, we have got the kick start needed to produce some wet snow showers this evening.  And yes, some rain may mix in, too.  The potential (key word here) is for a trace to 0.5 inches of snow.  Accumulation will tend to be on the lower end of this range for most (meaning flurries for most), but where these snow showers persist, up to 0.5 inches may fall between now and midnight tonight.  No big deal.  After midnight tonight, skies should begin to clear and it will turn colder.

      Sunday looks sunny to me.

And Tuesday looks sunny to me.

Presidents Day, however, will include quite a bit of high thin cirrus clouds, filtering the sun out from time to time.  The reason for these high clouds is due to a coastal storm off the shores of North Carolina.

TONIGHT:  Evening wet snow showers, some rain mixed in, too.
Trace to 0.5"  Cold, clearing late.

Lows:  23 to 28 degrees from suburb to city.

      Winds:  W to NW 5 - 15 mph

      SUNDAY:  Chilly sun.

High:  39 to 43 degrees from suburb to city

Winds:  NW 5 - 15 mph, gusts to 20 mph.

MONDAY:  High clouds, filtered sunshine, a bit colder.

High for Presidents Day:  near 39 degrees.

      TUESDAY:  Chilly sun.

      High:  near 41 degrees.
