He wiill be missed. From his romantic potrayals in Dirty Dancing and Ghost to his tougher roles in Roadhouse and The Outsiders. Who could forget his sensitive father like portrayals in the children's film Three's Wishes and as a con man who escapes from prison and takes his kids on the run with him in Fatherhood. And of course, there washis breakthrough role in the miniseries North and South.
A talented actor, singer, dancer, and athlete. He will be missed.

The last few days... actually the last 6 months I've been dealing with something. Part of that something I thought I was coming to terms with came back last Thursday, the loss of Farrah and Michael Jackson. It has to do with what will I leave behind when I'm no longer here. I guess at some point we all wonder... I wonder how we can not.
I know I must make every second count, not minutes, not days, not months, not years, but seconds. I must squeeze out everything I can. Do everything I can. Love everyone I can in every second I breathe.
It gets hard looking at the time we spend on just making a living, just to live. But is that really living? If you are all like me, of course you have to make a living to live... it's kinda funny how the world works and turns on that little philosophy.
But think about it. What did you do yesterday or the day before or the day before that? How many of you can say you did no work of any kinda but instead listened to the birds sing or the wind rustle the trees? Today, a Monday morning, how many of you can say you are doing exactly what your heart wants to do and be at this moment? How many of you are truly living your destiny?
I think we are all so caught up in making a living to live, we don't really live. We believe we are because we work hard to make money to take that vacation that allows us a chance to breathe and know that money puts food on our tables. Some might say they live through their children, life is in the eyes of a child. Well why live life through your child? Why not live life “with” your children? People are always working constantly. Life is in the eyes of a child they say. Why not be the eyes of a child and look at life for the first time the way children do? I know, you might think I'm longing for youth... nope, you're wrong. I don't regret things that have gone before. For what I have learned and observed in that time from then until now is immense. Instead I look at what made me happy and how life afforded me happiness and how so that I may draw upon it now. How do I within every second of every day celebrate myself, everyone and everything around?
If you thought I had the answer... don't you'd think I'd tell you?
Work, distances between, commitments all keep us away from those seconds much of the time of our lives.
For myself, maybe like many of you... I want to know what legacy I leave behind. For some of you it will be your children and what you have taught them... as long as you spend the time with them. Some of you will leave behind maybe your work, if you are a photographer, recording artist, artist, authors, actor etc... if you do what you love and suffered for your art. You will actually leave behind tangible things that will be viewed for lifetimes after. Some of you will be the voice that carried freedom to the masses of a land that was devoid of freedom and peace... if you dare be brave and forthright.
Alas, these are the things I have been wondering about the past few months. What shall there be of me when there is no me. Is it going to be the pen I wrote with today, the bottle I drank water out of today, this keyboard that I'm touching right now as I type this? Yes they are all left behind, finger prints and such will be swept away and they will never hold really anything of me as time passes.
I guess or least I hope my words, these here that you may read, stick around some how either in a way that has touched you, made you think or something. Or maybe they just hang around the Internet forever somehow... as long as my name is attached to it. ;) I hope the people I love so very, very dearly in my life will carry me with them in some manner. I hope some how whatever art I create will be hung on someone's wall or in a book. This is what I would like to leave behind. I guess I need to really start squeezing all of this into every second of everyday from this moment on. I must make this pledge, not a contract... that's too much like work. But a pledge, I need to change my ways, change what I see and how I see it and seize the day... yes Carpe diem... well it should really be "seize the second" cause that's what I'm going for here, but that phrase doesn't exist in Latin, go fig.
I leave you with this for all those that may read these words... take the time.
I finally have downloaded the photos off my camera. I don't know why I don't do it more often. But I must admit that it's sort of fun to finally do it and discover lots of memories I had forgotten that I have.
For instance, I forgot I had these photos from last September's film set of "Summer's Blood". It's a psychological horror film, and I star with Ashley Greene (Twilight), Stephen McHattie (Watchmen) and Peter Mooney. This is a very disturbing movie, because we are a family of serial killers. Hint: Do not go down in the basement! :)
Poor Ashley Greene (with me in the photo) picks the wrong family to get involved with.
The other shot is the house we used as our main location. It actually belonged to a wonderful family who was very patient with us while we shot there. (Can you imagine a hundred people coming in and taking over your house for a month?) You can't see them in the photo, but they had sheep and goats and chickens and every other farm animal, and each morning when we arrived on set, they would all walk out to greet us. Very curious animals! Or maybe they wanted to get in the movie?
One other very odd thing....for some reason the house was getting attacked by flies. Literally. We had fly traps hanging everywhere, and still could not stop them. In several scenes Ashley Greene, Peter Mooney and I were supposed to be eating food, but as soon as they set it out, the flies would swarm all over it. You will notice that we just sort of pushed the food around mostly to avoid eating them. It actually works to have them in the scene for production value, because the movie is supposed to be about decay. I hope they keep the buzzing noise of the flies in the sound track. I assure you it was very creepy sitting there listening to it happen live and trying not to flinch when they flew into my ear while the camera was rolling. ACKKKK!!
I got to live another one of my dreams yesterday! I was asked to play a Captain in an Army training film for Combat Film Productions. I have always wanted to play someone in the military, but in all my 20 years or so of being an actor, I've never gotten to do it. Til now!
My character is Captain Chandler, Intelligence officer, and she is supposed to outrank the other officers in the scene and give them a hard time when they don't take her seriously. I needed some military coaching in body language, attitude and wardrobe, and everyone could not have been nicer to me. Plus, everybody else in the cast and crew used to be in the military, so I was able to pick everybody's brain. I wanted to know how it would really feel to be a woman in basically a man's Army, butting heads with men. I had an absolute blast, and hope they'll bring me back again. My huge thanks go out to Jody Hart, Jared Chandler and the rest of the cast and crew for treating me like family, and for making one of my dreams come true!
Here's their website: www.CombatFilmProductions.com They're doing amazing things, including 360 degree filming, and special effects.
This is Hugh Daly, who did my wardrobe and coached me on military protocol. He's former military himself, and looks and sounds like Sean Connery. He even has a British accent!
Notice the snowy hills in the background? We were shooting in Palmdale, CA to make it look like Afghanistan, where it really does snow. Trust me, this snow is very real! Would you believe as I was driving there, only an hour from Los Angeles, it started snowing so hard that they almost closed the freeway? And we had to shoot outside all day long. I still feel like a popsicle. :)
I also want to send a shout out to all the real military personnel who live in these conditions every day, for little pay except for personal honor. I salute you and thank you for serving!
I talked to three girlfriends today and all three made some negative comment about themselves and talked about trying to get perfect. (This is still in New Year’s resolution territory after all.) I had to laugh. Even though I am in the same club. In fact, while I was talking to them, I was measuring out my 1,000 calorie a day diet I’m on right now (per my nutritionist) to get leaner for filming, and reading a magazine about which celebrities have had plastic surgery.
It’s a sickness. We are all fabulous, beautiful and talented women! So why do we feel this way? That we are never THERE yet? Wherever THERE is. And where does this whole concept of “Perfect” come from?
I am working hard to get past it. And to celebrate me now, as I am, instead of what I possibly-maybe-probably not-could be someday. My business puts added pressure on me though. Every other actress I work with is a size zero. It’s my life, and I have to deal with it. It’s disheartening, but if I start to obsess about it I start to spiral downwards. And that’s a bad place that I never want to see again. I am through feeding an eating disorder.
So…I consciously use “triggers” to get my attitude up again. They work instantly too! Things like: My magical vision board! Love words I say to myself! Celebrating my wins as they happen! Screaming a big fat happy YES inside myself!
And this year on January 1st I started a gratitude journal that I write in every night. I get into bed, open the book and reflect back on my day to find the good stuff. Makes me more aware of all the positive things in my life, and it outweighs the "not perfect" ones. And my attitude changes.
My girlfriend Phyllis decided to use “white butterflies” as her trigger. I even bought her white butterfly earrings. And would you believe she often ends up seeing them fly around her now? How weird is that. She calls me all the time and says “I’m looking at a white butterfly!” For real. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one around here, and I live in the same building. The Universe really does listen to us and sends back exactly what we are putting out. If it’s positive you’ll get positive back. But if it’s negative, watch out.
So when the negatives start happening to you, please borrow my trick. Do something that celebrates the positives in your life. Create your own triggers so that you are in control and can bounce right back up! It's that magical Law of Attraction thing...
Maybe we should just form a club called CLUB NOT SO PERFECT. And celebrate that! Hey, I think I’m on to something….
Love and Light!

Leslie La Page talks about being a woman in show business and how she created LA Femme Film Festival as a way to support and showcase women directors, writers, producers and directors of photography. She tells how the film festival process works, what they look for in submissions, and how to make your film stand out! She also distributes films and helps with mentoring, funding and marketing independent film makers.
Episode Segments:
What's it like to be a woman in the film business, and how can we inspire and mentor each other?
Leslie talks about her history as an actor/producer/director and how she learned to combine her business strength with being an Artist. She says women need to do more mentoring "up and down the ranks" and help women get the training and experience they need to compete for every job on the set. Men do it, but women don't do it enough for some reason. Women are talented filmmakers, and we don't need to limit ourselves because of old views in Hollywood. She created LA Femme Film Festival to celebrate and empower films made by women in key roles.
How do film festivals work, how do I submit my film, and what exactly are the different festivals looking for?
She's got a lot of festival experience, working as a programmer at Slamdance for years. She talks about how she created the Slamdance Bootcamp seminar for filmmakers, to take them from concept all the way through to the finished, distributed film. She is going to do the same thing soon through LA Femme Film Festival.
Leslie says to be smart when deciding who to submit your film to, and talks about the difference between festivals, that each one has a "theme". Find out who goes there, what kind of film do they pick, and what happens to the winners?
Guidelines for submitting to the LA Femme Film Festival, and how to level the playing field when you're competing against higher budget films.
Leslie works with the New Orleans Film Festival too, and talks about Louisiana and Florida film commission tax incentives. We need more incentives in place at the state and federal level, to keep production here in the states.
This is the third year for the LA Femme Film Festival, taking place Oct. 11-14, 2007 in Beverly Hills. (The LA Femme Film Festival takes place annually in October.) Leslie gives the guidelines for submissions, and says since it's here in L.A., there will be lots of distributors attending. That's important, because having your film in a festival is really the only way to get your film seen for most people. She says that smaller budget films can definitely compete against higher budgets with bigger names, and says the key is having a great script, great actors and lots of rehearsal!
LA Femme is an international film festival, and it's exciting to see films from women all over the world. It's important to network at these events!
LA Femme is an international festival, and she's getting submissions from women all over the world, including China, Korea, Jerusalem and Iran. Leslie says if you don't make it into her festival the first time, she gives you a free VIP pass to attend and watch all the other films to learn what you're competing against, so you can come back stronger next year. You can also attend all the events and parties and network with people like Martha Coolidge, who is being honored this year.
Leslie has a distribution company called Foundation Films, and offers services such as script-doctoring, financing, accounting and marketing. She says never take "No!" for an answer!

This movie has been in development at Warner Bros. for many years and yet it has never gotten off the ground for many reasons. Such things along the lines of high turnover in personnel during the development and not coming to an agreement over the right storyline or what direction the film should take. The last known plans for this film were to have German director Wolfgang Petersen direct, but he pulled out to direct the film Troy. This left the studio with a hole in their schedule for the year 2004, and so the film Catwoman starring Halle Berry was put together instead.
Her portrayal in the role left fans with a bad taste in their mouths, and the film was a box office flop. Many felt it was not true to the character with many still preferring Michelle Pfeiffer’s version of the role in Batman Returns. Many fans not in the know were confused over why the executives at Warner Bros. would replace the aborted Superman vs. Batman film with a flop which at the time could have ruined any chance of either franchises featuring The Man of Steel or The Dark Knight of making a return.
The individual Superman and Batman franchise fared much better with the releases of Batman Begins with Christian Bale in 2005 and Superman Returns starring Brandon Routh in 2006 which erased any stain Catwoman may have left just a year or so earlier, and both films performed well at the box office. Relaunching both franchises after a long hiatus, twenty years for Superman after Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest For Peace failed to bring the hardcore fan base of the first two films and ten years for Batman after the notorious disaster they call Batman and Robin rubbed everyone the wrong way.
Renewed success with these two franchises continue with the release of the Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight which featuring Christian Bale returning in the role of Bruce Wayne and Heath Ledger in his final performance playing a much different take on The Joker before his tragic death from a drug overdose. A third Batman film is planned with another return by Christian Bale and the Superman franchise will be given another overhaul to give The Man of Steel more of an edge, despite actor Brandon Routh being attached to once again play Clark Kent.
With these two icons returning to the big screen, there has been some light discussion about reviving the aborted film Superman vs. Batman. The director attached for the film Wolfgang Petersen has expressed interest in returning in addition to Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan from Batman Begins and The Dark Knight expressing interest in the film. Brandon Routh and director Bryan Singer of Superman Returns mentioned being interested also, but Routh expressed more interest in a team up instead of feud between Superman and Batman. Let’s examine the real problems behind this movie and how they could be fixed.
One problem is how these films conflict with the schedule of the individual Superman and Batman franchises, not allowing Bale and Nolan or Routh and Singer to make room in those schedules for it to happen. A good idea would be to rehire Wolfgang Petersen to direct the film, and hire two new actors to play both these iconic roles. To avoid any sort of confusion by the audience between this film and the individual Superman and Batman films, have Superman vs. Batman take place in an alternate time line or alternate universe.
The distinctive feature which could separate this film from the current and more modern Superman and Batman being done in the last few years is to have it set in the 1930's-1940's during The Golden Age of Comics when both characters were in there formative stages. Both Superman Returns and Batman Begins along with its sequel The Dark Knight are each set in a different universe from the earlier Superman and Batman films. And they both originated in comic books, a medium which knows a thing or two about alternate universes. It should not be hard to suspend disbelief here.
Another issue is the storyline for Superman vs. Batman, all previous attempts have involved Lex Luthor and The Joker hatching some scheme to mess with Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne’s lives causing them be at odds, leading to some kind of showdown between the two, maybe this rehashed plot device is one reason Superman vs. Batman has yet to see the light of day. Let’s cast these villains aside for awhile, and focus on this being more of a character driven film. Maybe focus on the origins of how both Superman and Batman came to be, and how this can put them at odds.
The film could open with the scene in Crime Alley where a young Bruce Wayne witnesses the murder of his parents Thomas and Martha Wayne at the hands of thug Joe Chill when they exit the old movie palace showing The Mask of Zorro. Then he gets a tip from a private investigator revealing he’s located the last living relatives of Joe Chill, the man who murdered his parents years ago. Bruce Wayne learns they are an old couple named Jonathan and Martha Kent living in a rural town called Smallville. He then dons the Batman persona and goes to confront them.
When he arrives, Batman barges in the retired couple, breaking into their house, and killing them both. Bruce Wayne’s reason for being Batman has been vindicated by eliminating the last remnant of Joe Chill, and the spirit of his parents can now rest. The next day, Clark Kent gets a call from The Daily Planet getting the disturbing news his parents have been murdered in Smallville, and returns to his hometown to identify the bodies. After losing the parents who raised him since he came from Krypton in a capsule as an infant, Clark Kent’s reason for being Superman has now been threatened.
When identifying the bodies of his deceased parents, Clark spots a business card from Wayne Enterprises with Bruce Wayne’s name on it, but does not give it too much thought since he is stricken with grief over his loss. He retreats to The Fortress of Solitude to grieve in private where he encounters the ghost of his Kryptonian birth father Jor-El who shows him a projection into the current state of Metropolis without Superman, which is now a crime ridden shell of its former self with street gangs and graffiti all over the place.
Bruce walks down the Crime Alley section of Gotham City for the first time since the fateful night when his own parents were murdered. It is now much different place, any type of criminal activity has long since been wiped out, and it has become a peaceful and quite place where the sun shines bright. The crime rate in Gotham has gone down, and almost feels he has no reason to assume the Batman persona anymore. He then hears about the nearby town of Metropolis going into decline because of a recent crime wave, and decides to relocate there.
Clark soon learns of a dark bat like vigilante hitting the streets of Metropolis, and once again dawns the Superman identity, returning to Metropolis to confront him. In the final showdown with Batman, he learns this dark figure of the night is the one who traveled to Smallville and killed his parents. Superman reveals he is Clark Kent, the adopted son of the old couple he murdered, and learns Batman is in fact Bruce Wayne who then reveals his own parents were murdered by a relative of theirs, and had to be raised an orphan by their butler Alfred as a result.
This last showdown goes back and forth without a clear cut winner, and leaver the door open for moviegoers to decide who really won this personal battle between these two heroes who have now both been through tragedies in their lives. Bruce Wayne having led a tragic life since his parents were murdered at a young age while Clark Kent led an ideal optimistic life being raised by two loving parents until they were murdered by a vengeful dark knight who wanted retribution for his childhood being robbed from him so many years ago, and can now find some measure of peace.
Superman vs. Batman would not have to be some movie which makes a lot of money, Warner Bros. already has the individual Superman and Batman franchises themselves for this purpose. It also does not need some huge plot or over the top villains to drive the story or be some awful attempt to cash in on the idea of cross breeding two franchises along the lines of Freddy vs. Jason or Alien vs. Predator. It just needs good storytelling with deep internal motivations for the characters rooted in their origins and bringing forth something we have never seen before.
This makes me laugh. We were so young! Boy, we had fun on this movie, and it's become kind of a campy cult classic now. With me here is Nick Vallelonga on the left, and Bobby Ray Shafer on the right. I just shot another movie recently with Bobby Ray, called "Heat Wave" which will be out soon.
This man changed my life. He passed away in September, 2008, and I miss him very much. Read his book "Dreams Into Action"... he was on Oprah with it, and Deepak Chroprah wrote the forward. It's an amazing kick in the butt to get you on your way to living your dreams!
