some interesting and important facts learned on my trip to the Amazon... also some of my personal thoughts at the end :)
- Almost 20% of global carbon emissions come from deforestation in the Amazon rainforest. As an aside, this is larger than the emissions from all of the transportation sectors combined.
- The rainforest is one of the largest carbon sinks in the world, along with the oceans. As the oceans have no further capacity to absorb CO2, any decrease in the amount of forest directly increases the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
- About 15% of the rainforest has been deforested to date and we are losing 1 to 2% per year at this point. The tipping point at which the rainforest can no longer sustain itself is at 30% deforestation. This means that we have about 10 - 15 years to turn the tide.
- Where government parks (for the most part) and indigenous lands have been set aside, the forests are in good shape. This is due primarily to heroes on the front lines (like ACT and Saude Alegria and Gaias Amazonas and REDD and Imazon) who have empowered the indigenous peoples to protect their lands. One rule of thumb...where there are indigenous peoples there is intact forest, where there is not, the forest is under pressure.
- The majority of the deforestation comes from logging, cattle farming and soy production on private lands. This is where the rubber will meet the road in the next 10 - 15 years if we are to prevent the collapse of the rainforest.
- There are growing forces on both sides of the development (highways, logging, farming) versus preservation equation in Brazil. It is highly likely that solutions will come from within the country (consumer awareness of the consumption of precious resources) and from outside the country (resources to protect the rainforest, compensate landholders for not cutting down the forest). One encouraging example of an international effort to slow deforestation was the $1B contribution of the Norwegian government this year to Brazil in its efforts.
The good news is that there are many smart and devoted social entreprenuers on the ground working fearlessly to to make sure our future is protected.
The main thing I took away from this trip was how important community is. The villages were " all for one and one for all". I really wish we had a stronger sense of community and togetherness in the USA. But often egos and selfishness get in the way.
Another thing I really appreciated about the social entreprenuers I spent time with on this trip was the way they communicate. One thing that bothers me about some people in Hollywood is that they get mad at you for having a difference in opinion or they think you are dumb for not thinking EXACTLY like them and they make snide remarks and even insult. Since they are rich, successful and "smart" they think that they are always right and know everything.
The proper way to communicate to listen, try to understand, and respect other peoples POV's. I could go on and on about the issues I have with some powerful people in Hollywood, but I will leave it at that!
I wish everyone could have the opportunity I did. I realized how spoiled and fortunate we are living in the USA yet so many people bitch and moan and demand perfectionism. People need to wake up and chill out and be grateful for all they have has individuals and all we have as a nation. The easiest place in the world to live!
"In what must be discouraging news for the man-made global warming crowd, Michigan had the snowiest winter EVER this year , or at least since they started recording snowfall in 1880. Milwaukee had 95.4 inches of snow this year , the second highest amount on record. In even worse news for Al Gore and company, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has reported that all of the allegedly “lost” ice has now returned to the polar ice caps . Is it just an anomaly that we are experiencing one of the coldest winters on record in the last century?
While I’m not saying our earth hasn’t warmed a degree or two overall in the last hundred years or so, Jupiter , Neptune , Mars , and Pluto have also been warming. So are we to assume that our greenhouse gases are affecting other planets or just our own? I guess the possibility of our own sun causing the earth to become warmer or cooler is just too obvious. Of course, if the sun were causing it, there wouldn’t be a thing we could do about it and there wouldn’t be any money or political power to be gained over the illusion that we are at fault for it. If the sun is going to get infinitely hotter, then we’re screwed no matter what we do."
My blog www.wardrobewire.com, that will eventually turn into a full blown site, has made it to Alltop. check it out: http://fashion.alltop.com/
About Alltop.com:
We help you explore your passions by collecting stories from “all the top” sites on the web. We’ve grouped these collections — ”aggregations” — into individual Alltop sites based on topics such as environment, photography, science, celebrity gossip, fashion, gaming, sports, politics, automobiles, and Macintosh. At each Alltop site, we display the latest five stories from thirty or more sites on a single page — we call this “single-page aggregation.”
You can think of an Alltop site as a “dashboard,” “table of contents,” or even a “digital magazine rack” of the Internet. To be clear, Alltop sites are starting points — they are not destinations per se. The bottom line is that we are trying to enhance your online reading by both displaying stories from the sites that you’re already visiting and helping you discover sites that you didn’t know existed. In this way, our goal is the “cessation of Internet stagnation.”
At 8:00 pm on March 29th people are being asked to turn off the lights to conserve energy. Folks who participate will shut off their Tv's, radios, computers and anything else considered non-essential. The whole idea started in Sydney, Australia and has spread across the globe. Because of widespread cooperation among governement agencies, business and individuals, energy usage dropped by more than 10 percent, according to the World Wildlife Fund. Learn more about the challenge @ www.earthhour.org . I am going to give this a try though it may require a nice glass of wine, a fire in the fireplace & some candlelight...it'll be cool to be a part of something so simple and helpful to our world! Hope to hear about what you did during 1 lil hour without electricity! :)
College education is the key determining factor in professional success, and the most effective way to break the cycle of poverty in a family. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a worker with a bachelor’s degree earns nearly $1 million more over his or her lifetime compared with someone with only a high school diploma. Yet, every year nearly 200,000 college-capable high school graduates from low-income families do not enroll in college; they do not even apply.
College Summit, a national, school-wide college access program, equips schools and districts with tools and support to increase the college enrollment rate of all students, with a particular emphasis on those from low-income backgrounds. Since 1993, College Summit has built its tools and expertise around motivating and managing students through the post-secondary transition in the following ways:
About fifteen percent of the rising senior class attends a four-day workshop on a college campus where they get a head start on college applications by learning how to effectively write a personal statement, meet one-on-one with a guidance counselor, learn the basics of financial aid and gain concrete skills in self-advocacy. Armed with real experience, these students then return to their schools and spread their knowledge and enthusiasm to their peers.
College Summit meticulously tracks progress and delivers data to educators. By sharing ongoing measurement and analysis, College Summit empowers educators to innovate and make course corrections mid-stream, to maximize college-going in their schools.
To date, more than 20,000 students have participated in College Summit's program at schools across the country. Additionally, more than 1,000 educators have been trained in college application management and College Summit’s own Navigator curriculum. High schools partnering with College Summit have achieved significant school-wide college enrollment increases over baseline.
College Summit’s proven strategy engages critical stakeholders across the community, resulting in an approach that embeds systemic, scalable, and enduring change. Central to its work are meaningful partnerships with schools, districts, colleges and supporters that go far beyond financial investments. A national partnership with Deloitte , for example, leverages their intellectual capital and core competencies by focusing on skills-based volunteering, development of a scalable database capable of accurately measuring and reporting high-volume college enrollment rates and board service in regions across the country. Capital One , another national partner, recently provided the same intensive management training to all College Summit managers that it provides to its own leaders.
At the turn of the century, our nation was in the process of making high school graduation an outcome for every student. At the time, that was a bold thought -- one that seems obvious now. In 2007, many observers, including some within the education milieu, believe that college readiness is for some students and not others. As a nation, we maintain that posture at our peril. Whether or not all students make it to college, it simply must be the case that no student is denied the chance because a high school environment doesn’t drive to college readiness. College Summit is a capacity builder for schools and districts, providing practical tools for the growing number of superintendents and principals who embrace this view.
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society's nationwide signature event. I had the honor of being a Co-Captain for TEAM PITA in 2007. Throughout the event, my teammates and I took turns walking around the track and camping out. Our team fundraising goal was $1500, however we raised over $3000!!!! This took a lot of hard work and dedication from the team members! Our team was created on behalf of Pita Carrasco, my cousin, who has been a breast cancer survivor for 3 years.
The event took place on August 11th-12th atKimball Parkin National City. Many people walked in honor or in memory of someone they know who has been touched by cancer. ALuminaria Ceremony was held at sun down, where candles were lit, placed around the track, and we remembered those who have been touched by cancer.
The chair member from the National City Relay For Life was proud to report that the event had a total of 28 teams come together, bringing approximately 300 participants who raised $70,000 through Relay For Life. This wonderous group of 88 survivors provided inspiration to all.
Overall, the experience was truly special. I met a lot of great people, had a lot of fun, and made special memories!
Remember..There's no finish line until we find a cure!
This is well said…
A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. Like so many others her age, she considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, and was very much in favor of the redistribution of wealth.
She was deeply ashamed that her father was a rather staunch Republican, a feeling she openly expressed. Based on the lectures that she had participated in, and the occasional chat with a professor, she felt that her father had for years harbored an evil, selfish desire to keep what he thought should be his.
One day she was challenging her father on his opposition to higher taxes on the rich and the addition of more government welfare programs. The self-professed objectivity proclaimed by her professors had to be the truth and she indicated so to her father. He responded by asking how she was doing in school.
Taken aback, she answered rather haughtily that she had a 4.0 GPA, and let him know that it was tough to maintain, insisting that she was taking a very difficult course load and was constantly studying, which left her no time to go out and party like other people she knew. She didn't even have time for a boyfriend, and didn't really have many college friends because she spent all her time studying.
Her father listened and then asked, "How is your friend Audrey doing ?"
She replied, "Audrey is barely getting by. All she takes are easy classes, she never studies, and she barely has a 2.0 GPA. She is so popular on campus; college for her is a blast. She's always invited to all the parties, and lots of times she doesn't even show up for classes because she's too hung over."
Her wise father asked his daughter, "Why don't you go to the Dean's office and ask him to deduct a 1.0 off your GPA and give it to your friend who only has a 2.0. That way you will both have a 3.0 GPA and certainly that would be a fair and equal distribution of GPA."
The daughter, visibly shocked by her father's suggestion, angrily fired back, "That wouldn't be fair! I have worked really hard for my grades! I've invested a lot of time, and a lot of hard work! Audrey has done next to nothing toward her degree. She played while I worked my tail off!"
The father slowly smiled, winked and said gently, " Welcome to the Republican party."
