OK, so not many people would equate a three year old girls princess party with a major sporting event. Afterall, sports are competitive events where experts in a given discipline square off to establish themselves as the best...to compete....to win...little girls are, well, soft and pink and...cute.
My daughter turned three today and had 6 of her friends over for pink cupcakes and pink M&M's served on pink plates with pink napkins (that remain unused). To an outsider this might appear like a cute gathering of tu-tu and tiara wearing "Enchanted" devotees, but this was more...so much more...
When the first two girls arrived my daughter quickly established a low post positon by the bin full of princess dresses. During chalk and video work ups the night before I had stressed the importance of positioning and footwork and - of course - toughness, both physical and mental. She had yawned quite a bit as I diagrammed play after play, but I could tell that she was fascinated by both the bredth of my knowledge and the practical application of years of sports devotion. It was all on display today - she was the Wayne Gretzky of 3-year-old-princesses. She bobbed, she weaved, she poked another little girl in the eye (accidently?), she pounded back cupcakes like Ezra Johnson eating hotdogs on the sidelines of a Packers game...
The day saw everything seen at a major sporting event - drama (LOTS of drama), excitement, good footwork (mostly in dancing), laughter, tears and of course,... popcorn.
All in all a big win for the family - expecting a similar performance at my son's 6th birthday in the Spring.
