If you're wondering how to build a chicken coop, then you are definitely not alone. Chicken coops are becoming more and more popular. Using these quick and easy design elements and adding them to your overall chicken coop plan, you will build a chicken coop that is both pleasing to the eye, and safe for your chickens.
Tip #1 - Build a Safe Chicken Coop
You not only need to protect your chickens from hungry predators, but they must be able to survive the natural elements, such as rain, snow, and summer heat. The location of your chicken coop is of upmost importance when considering the safety of your chickens. Primarily, you should build the chicken coop in a high and well drained area, so if and when it does rain, the coop will dry quickly. It is also important to have your chicken coop face the sun, so that the coop can dry properly in wet seasons.
When hot weather hits, proper ventilation is key. Installing sliding windows and doors that can be opened and closed as needed will provide the chickens proper ventilation in hot weather.
In order to protect your coop and chickens from predators, you should bury your outside runs with chicken wire surrounding the coop at a depth of about 1 foot. This will deter all but the largest predators from reaching your chickens.
Tip #2 - Build an Easy Maintenance Coop
Diseases and sickness can spell disaster to coop bound chickens. Cleaning your chicken coop should be as easy as possible so that you can do it quick and often. There are a few design techniques that will ensure cleaning your chicken will be easy. Install doors that open inward and not outward. Another design element that makes it much easier to clean your chicken coop is to design the floor at a low angled slope towards the main door. When hosing down the inside of the coop with water and disinfectants, the water will drain outside the coop automatically, instead of puddling in the middle - which can be a major hassle.
Tip #3 - Keeping Your Coop Warm and Bright
A properly built chicken coop is not only well ventilated, but warm in the cold winter months. There are a few simple tips to follow in order to keep your chickens warm at night or in the cold seasons. The first tip is to properly insulate the walls of the structure. This will not only keep your chickens dry in wet seasons, it will help to hold in the heat in the cold. You should also face the chicken coop so that the windows let in light from the sun. This is an easy and inexpensive way to keep your chickens warm in the cold months.
Another tip is to install a proper electrical lightning system. These are relatively inexpensive and cheap to maintain. Installing light will not only let you see the chickens if you need to at night, it can serve as a wonderful heat source.

I’ve got a friend that recently found out that she has a tumor in her lung, so my wife and I went over to their house to pray for her. I asked another friend of mine named Chuck to come with us because he’s a really good guy & someone that I would call a “prayer warrior”. He’s helped us out a couple of times so I knew he would really help my friend too. We chatted a little bit and then Chuck asked, “so, what did the doctors say?” She said, “ he called it Hodgkin's lymphoma or something like that, I don’t remember the name”. What he said next was so simple but very powerful. He said “yeah, it’s some name, but there’s a name above all other names” and I thought wow, that is so true. There is a name that is greater than any name. JESUS, the Son, the Redeemer, the Advocate, the Savior, the Healer, the Friend, the Light and where there is light, there is no darkness.
Well, a day later I got some revelation. After God created Adam, one of the jobs God gave him was to name all of the animals. The last time I checked, we have dominion over all animals right? So, if we have dominion over the things we name, then we should name the things we are going through. Whether it's a disease, financial burdens, emotions or anything else, we should name it and place it under the name above all other names, JESUS.

| Psalms 27 1. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? 2. When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me to eat up my flesh, they stumbled and fell. 3. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear: though war should rise against me, in this will I be confident. 4. One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple. 5. For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. 6. And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD. |
The last time I wrote in this journal, was May 19th. I had no idea that the next day, my dad, Bob Tyson, would go to be with the Lord. Just an hour after I wrote about starting a journal, I was on the phone with my daughter, Stephany, who was having some computer problems. It was around 10:00pm and all of a sudden, I heard a scream come through the phone. I was in Tegucigalpa and she was at mom and dads house in San Marcos de Colon about a three hour drive from my house in the capital. She was on a wireless phone so she immediately went into the room where dad was laying on the floor. I could hear him groaning in pain and the anguish was horrible for me because I did not know what was going on. I could only hear Stephany saying "Grandpa, are you alright." Stephany passed mom the phone and she told me that dad had fallen and hit his head and he was throwing up and clear liquid was coming out of his nose. I stayed on the phone with her for about an hour until mom asked me to pick up Steve, my brother, and to come immediately to San Marcos.
We left around midnight with my wife and my brother and we arrived in San Marcos close to 3:00am. Dad was laying on his bed with his eyes open and he was moving around just a bit. Around 4:00am we decided to get some rest and dad actually got up with some help to go to the bath room. We thought at that time that he was OK. At 5:40am, mom woke us up to tell us that dad was getting worst. More liquid was coming out of his nose and he was vomiting. A doctor came and put him on IV and he was giving medicine to stop any swelling in his brain. We called his doctors in Tegucigalpa and we also called his doctor in the U.S. and they both said that he should not be moved and we should wait. They thought that maybe he had a concussion.
He was this way, still semi conscience, until noon when he went into a coma. I called Doctor Boss who has always been dads doctor and he asked me to check his pupils and their was no reaction. He was just about brain dead and now their was nothing we could do but wait. His vital signs was good and his blood pressure was almost perfect but there was no reaction physically from him at all. At 7:10pm, he took his last breath and he went to be with the Lord.
It took over 4 hours for the funeral home to come from the capital to pick his body up. By that time, hundreds of people had surrounded our house and many tears were being shed. I personally broke down and cried like I had never cried before. As my dad laid there, I hugged him and begged him for forgiveness for leaving the mission back in 1997. I had been back working again since 2003 but I felt so much guilt and my heart was about to explode. Mom and Steve were in shock. This seemed so unreal to all of us. Dad had always had such a presence about him that it was almost like he would never die. For over four hours, we set by his side crying and at the same time, attending the people who had come.
There is one moment that I will never forget. I was outside the house greeting the people who were coming to pay their respects. I went inside and I found Stephany laying almost on top of his body crying. Stephany and dad had a wonderful relationship and he loved her so much. I had to almost drag Stephany off of him and take her outside where she could clear her head. The atmosphere in our house is something that I cannot explain. It was like having a bad dream but at the same time, being awake. There was so many things going through our head that we did not even no where to get started. We had to start planning a funeral, start trying to get all the legal papers to get him out of the country, and many other things and we did not even know how to get started.
Elma, Our High School Director, and Angelica, Our High School Sub Director, immediately came up to us and said, "You worry about your dad, we will take care of the funeral here in San Marcos." What a relief it was to know that we had people ready to help us. At around midnight, the funeral home van came and dad was placed in a simple wood casket and transported to the Capital. We followed behind so we could meet them at the funeral home.
When we arrived at the funeral home around 4:00am, we had no idea that we had picked a very cheap funeral home to start preparing his body. They were on the list of the funeral homes that the American Embassy had recommended but this was an awful place. I don't know if they had not paid their light bill but a man escorted us into a dark room with a flash so we could pick out a casket. This place scared all of us and emotionally, we were not ready to deal with this kind of situation. We were tired but at the same time, we could not sleep. Our bodies were weak and this funeral home was not helping at all.
The next morning, we found out that dad would have to receive an autopsy. We also found out that American Airlines only worked with one funeral home and it was not this one. So without sleep, Mom and Steve started the process of getting an autopsy for dad while some of our workers made arrangements with the other funeral home. I had not slept all night long. I was trying to arrange other papers and the process of calling all the family members in the U.S. Finally, dad was taking to get his autopsy and what a horrible place this was. The only way I can describe this place is if you can imagine a dirt road leading to a dirt field with an old building with some freezers that did not even work. The Autopsy took about three hours and we were now ready to get his body prepared to return dad back to San Marcos for the Funeral.
Dad's body finally arrived at the Good Samaritan Tabernacle around midnight where hundreds of people were waiting for him. I cannot tell you the total amount but the Tabernacle was full and even tents were set up outside to feed everyone. We thought that this was going to be just a wake but it turned out to be a Funeral Service with many of our pastors speaking. In honduras, there is a custom that the body cannot be left alone until it is buried so everyone stayed all night until the main funeral service the next day.
I was getting ready for the funeral when my mom came to me and said "Philip, we have a problem. We have all the papers to get dad out of the country but we do not have his death certificate. The office that handles this is on a national strike." I took off to the local office in San Marcos where I found a sign on the door saying that they were on strike and no papers would be issued including birth and death certificates. I explained to the Government Employees how serious this situation was and that his body could start decomposing and that we needed their help. I asked them if they could just open up for a few minutes just to issue his death certificate. The man looked at me and said, "I don't care if he decomposes or not. We are not opening up." I stood their for a minute with my brother at my side in shock not knowing what to do. Without even thinking, I took off to the Tabernacle where the funeral was being held. There was thousands of people and without even thinking, I went up to the platform and asked for the microphone. I told everyone what was going on and I asked Ramon Aguirre, the pastor of the church in San Marcos, to pray for this situation. As he prayed, I returned back to the Government office. As I was arriving, I received a call from a friend of mine that works for the Government. His sister is the president of the political party and even though his phone call was to give his respects, I asked him to help me with this problem. In just a few minutes, I had the chief of staff for the president on one phone and the president of the congress on another. I started receiving phone calls from many top government officials promising to do everything they could to help us with this situation. This may sound incredible but these government workers in san marcos would not even talk to them. They said that until their demands were met, they were not going to open up the office.
About 2:40pm, a fax came in from the attorney general for Honduras ordering the strike to be lifted just long enough for dads death certificate to be issued. He said that if this order was not obeyed, these men would go to jail. Immediately, they opened up the office and gave us the papers that we needed. Even in dads death, God made a miracle happen. Even today, the people in San Marcos are asking for these men to be fired from their jobs.
Two days later, we were able to fly our dads body back to the U.S. to be buried. What we did not know was that the ministers of the Presidency of Honduras had met and an order was given to all police, immigration, and all government offices to co-operate fully with us in any need we had.
Dads body is now resting but we know that he is in heaven with all of his loved ones and friends. This is truly one experience that I will never forget. This has shown me more than ever that when God has his hand on us, no one can fight against the power of God. Like I said before, even in his death, God was glorified and if there was someone that did not know dad in Honduras when he was alive, they definitely know him now.
Philip Tyson
It is incredible how time can get away from you, especially when you are in Honduras. Everything runs so slow but before you know it, a month has gone by and you can't even remember what you have done or accomplished. Well anyway, that is me. I am about to leave for San Marcos with the first truck of furniture, clothes, etc. My wife and I are very excited and nervous about the move but we know that it is God's will. During these past couple of weeks, I have experienced many feelings that I have never experienced before. It is hard to put a name to it but I guess I would call it some type of insecurity. I have been reading many articles on the internet about insecurity and it is amazing how many people in this world suffer from this. It is a nervousness of not knowing what is going to happen next. Some people have insecurities about their weight, their looks, their finances, their marriage, or many other things. Mine seems to be about living somewhere else that is not the home that I have lived in for the last eight years. It is incredible how our minds adapt to all of our surroundings. The color of the walls, the way the kitchen is laid out, or even where the light switches are at. All of this makes us feel more secure.
You probably recognize these things in people around you. But you may also be aware of these things in yourself. Are you insecure? How does your insecurity show itself? But, what can we do about it? Some things look so impossible that we just learn to live with them. Live with our awkwardness, our difficulty with other people, or our bad reaction in certain situations. It is not easy to know exactly what to do or most importantly what people want you to do. During all this time of waiting on the Lord, I have tried to determine exactly what does everyone want me to do. I have definitely found out that their is no way to make everyone happy. One decision can bring a smile to someone's face but at the same time, you can bring stress to others. Not everyone thinks alike.
As a child, my dad made sure that I was not insecure about anything. He made me accomplish task on my own which brought a feeling of reaching a goal. The more goals you reach, the better you feel about yourself and the more confidence you have. I remember when the mission purchased their first computer. Dad hired some programmers to come in to put all the mission finances on the computer around 1987 but they could not figure it out. I was around 18 years old and one day dad came in and said "Philip, work on that thing and get the mailing list and the finances on it." I had no idea what I was doing but after a few weeks, our finances and mailing list was totally working on the computer. I felt so good because I had accomplished a huge goal. In the late 80's their were no software or automated programs, everything had to be programmed but I had learned something new and the most important part is that I made my dad proud. He never really told me that he was proud but I could tell that he
was. Just the look on his face was enough.
As I grew up, I met many people in my life and I was able to become close friends with Presidents, Politicians, and many others who would invite me to their home. All of this made me feel even more secure about who I was and I learned that even these important men were just as normal as I was. The only difference is that they held an important job and they had power. I have been thinking about all of this for a few days and the Lord suddenly placed a thought in my heart. It is not what we do that makes us important, it is who we are. Who are we? We are the children of the Almighty God. How much more importance can this be. We are the children of the God that owns everything and who created not just this world but the universe.
I definitely do not understand everything about life. Here is what I can tell you though. I get feelings of insecurity sometimes and other type of emotional scares so I immediately think about Proverbs 3:5 "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding." This verse has helped me more than you can imagine. I may be nervous about the move to San Marcos but I must Trust the Lord with all my heart. He knows my future and because I am His child, He is going to take care of me as long as I stay in His will. The Bible says in Proverbs 3:23 "Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble." Our life is in God's hands.
I want all of you to know that I love each one of you. I may not know some of you personally but I know that thousands of prayers and been prayed for me. I lay in bed at night and so many Bible verses that I thought I had forgotten just seem to come back into my mind and into myheart.
My next journal entry will be from San Marcos. I have installed a satellite internet service so I will still be able to update the website and send out the emails. Please keep us in your prayers and pray that I have a part in seeing more souls come to Christ.
May God Bless You,
Philip Tyson
It's about 9:10PM on December 17th. Greg and I have been here since about 4PM. Our good friend/producer/studio guy, Mike Snow, got here about 7:30PM. Its about 30 degrees in this room which is the churchs office/practice room, which is lovingly called Club 130 Jax. Snow and I are staying close to the space heater. Cara stopped by earlier to take some pictures.
Its Day 2 of recording for Broken Falls upcoming album, which were calling Reconciled only for tonight. The joke behind that is that this is the happy version of W&R. Musically it's more light and upbeat and lyrically it's more hopeful.
After tonight, I will now forevermore refer to Greg as Greg the One-Take Wonder Moses. Well, maybe not, but he nailed the new song No Tomorrow in one shot (other than the fact the computer freaked out towards the end, but otherwise it would have been perfect). We are currently working on Embrace which has been nothing short of hilarious. Its probably only funny to us since were tired and freezing.
Anyway, I know Im really excited about working on this record. Its a bit more reserved than the previous one, but were trying to stretch our musical abilities by incorporating different instruments and trying different music styles such as folk, jazz, and blues. Weve found spots for the tin whistle, harmonica, mandolin, dobro, and potentially the banjo, trumpet, and sax (no promises though). Well see what we can do for loops or programming which will be Snows doing.
The plan for now is for Greg and me to come back tomorrow and do some more work before we both go home for Christmas. Hopefully, we will be able to return in early January and keep moving forward.
Well, thats it for now. Well probably finish three tracks tonight and keep going tomorrow. Until next time.
-Brandon.
