Picture people dressed in costumes themed from movies ranging from "Shaft" and "Foxy Brown" to "Super Fly." Well, that wild bunch kicked off an early evening of festivities that took you back to the 1970's. This event was filled with comedy, music and a 70's party that would not be complete without a soul train line.
The evening began with a best costume contest, where guests paraded around the room to show off their attire to the audience, who chose the winners by rounds of applause. Its host, J. Anthony Brown, and Tom Joyner came dressed in their grandest 70's attire to highlight the evening and get things started. Gary Owens was the featured comedian; he entertained the audience with his "surprisingly relatable" brand of comedy.
Michael McDonald headlined tonight, and while he performed, the audience sang with him as he bellowed old familiar tunes, such as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and "Minute by Minute." His final performance was a special tribute dedicated to Tom Joyner. The crowd chanted for an encore performance, and he obliged.
No 70's party would be complete without a "Soul Train" line! Every signature dance move from "Soul Train" went down the line, and DJ Hollywood and Steve "Silk" Hurley cranked out as many 70's tunes as they could throughout the night.
This was the most visually entertaining party we've had this week. Kudos to our DJs on the wheels of steel!

Play Date is an afternoon activity of fun and games sponsored by Ford Motor Company. This activity allows guests to relive their childhood by playing a number of popular games. When you walk into the Dragon's Liar room, you will see people playing some of their favorite games like Hungry Hippo, Twister, Rock 'em-Sock'em Robots, or even playing Spades. Throughout the session, guests could answer trivia questions about Ford's new line of cars for prizes.
Just when you think that is all to see, you turn the corner to see someone hosting a grown-up version of Simon Sez, musical chairs, and a dance-off between the men and the women. The final dance competition was a breakdance duel between a male and a female, and when it was all over, the female dancer pulled off a "Stomp the Yard" move so fierce that everyone in the room had to give her loud props!
"I went to the Play Date and joined in the fun. I teamed up the women who played Simon Sez against the fellas. Of course, we won!" stated Julia Richardson of Silver Spring, Maryland.
Give us a song, some games and a minute, and we will represent at any age! This play date was unlike anything I've experienced as an adult, and it brought back so many memories. This was yet another fun-filled activity on the Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage Cruise. Are you getting ready to pack for 2010?

The Kem concert has definitely been regarded as the one you won't want to miss. It's been sold out every night so far, and everyone says that the show is fantastic. The reason why he moves people so much is because not only is he talented, but he also infuses a spiritual message to inspire his audience.
The venue he's playing in is called the Viking Room, a very intimate setting which allows you to feel very close to Kem. During the concert, he moves around the room to touch and connect with his audience. You can expect Kem to engage his audience with some sort of group participation activity. His love ballads make the ladies swoon and will put men in the mood for love.
Kem's sound is authentic as he moves from the piano to the keyboard, then back to the mike. At the same time, he will melodically display his raw singing talent enhanced by various percussion accents. He is backed by an awesome band, whose members have played with some of the greatest artists around, such as Anita Baker and others. He introduced his new CD, entitled "Share My Life," which should reach platinum status in record time.
"I thought Luther Vandross' spirit was there when Kem sang his new single 'Share My Life,'" said Shephard Green III of Atlanta. "It took me back to the Luther days of listening to old love ballads."
During Kem's concert, he stops to give a testimony of his life and how God brought him through some challenging times. He also attests to how God will remain a driving force in his life and music moving forward. He regards the messages in his music as a way to serve others. With this unique combination of talent and inner spirituality, Kem will be around for a very long time.

Almost every man on this ship disappeared at the same time, and the Promenade became a ghost town. Why, you ask? Because the infamous Uncle Luke Skywalker had entered the building! What added to the party was an announcement from Doug E. Fresh saying that this party/concert would take on a "Miami Beach" theme ... OMG!! Ladies who brought a man on this trip either stayed in their rooms mad or joined him at the party.
Females fell up in there clad in nothing more than pieces of fabric in the guise of swimsuits. I would not call feathers a swimsuit, but some chick certainly did! Not everyone knew that Whodini, Doug E. Fresh, and Big Daddy Kane planned to perform at this show, but did they ever! Doug E. Fresh did his classic rendition of "Lodi Dodi,” and Whodini did their thing as well. Big Daddy Kane is so laid back, you would not think that he could move with such agility onstage, but he totally gave it up on his turn at the mike.
Carolyn Baldwin of Maryland said she "was pleasantly surprised at this show. Big Daddy Kane and Whodini did a great job, and Doug E. Fresh was icing on the cake. My guy friend and I left before the concert ended, but Luke was just getting warmed up."

It don't mean a thing if you ain't got the Go-Go swing! DO WHOP! DO WHOP! DO WHOP!
Now I know why the can of Red Bull was placed in my room! After three hours of non-stop dancing with Chuck Brown and his D.C. crew, you needed every drop of the Bull to keep it going. His mix of jazz, hip hop, R&B and reggae gave you a flavor of both old school and new school.
Linda Salvador of New Jersey says, "Chuck's performance is over-the-top. As soon as I can get him to perform, he will be at my next party."
I saw old school party people doing the soldier boy and the stanky leg. This non-stop, three-hour performance was backed by DJ Kool, who got right into the mix to keep the party going.
There is a D.C. crew here whose posse follows Chuck and parties with him all night long. Just when you think they are out of energy, they chant "Wind it up, Chuck!" He then gives you another surge of energy to keep you on the floor. I heard in my sleep "Wind it up, Chuck!"
What a concert!

If the Represent Night Party wasn't enough for everyone, the next stop was the hip-hop concert hosted by Doug E. Fresh and DJ Hollywood around 2:30 a.m. "Love among legends" is the best way to describe the most remarkable, exhilarating, nostalgic and moving display of classic hip-hop songs I've ever witnessed.
Here's the line-Up: Kurtis Blow ("If I Ruled the World," "The Breaks"); Rob Base ("It Takes Two"); Dres of Black Sheep ("Flavor of the Month"); Kool Moe Dee ("How Ya' Like Me Now"); DJ Kool (He had us do the "Freeze" moment) and, last but not least, Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five (all the classics!). Although Doug E. Fresh did not perform, which was surprising, he still thrilled us with his original beat box antics. Picture, if you will, thousands of people, moving and jumping and rapping (all the words) in unison to every song performed on the stage. Picture, if you will, the legendary rappers giving love to one another as each one KILLED IT on the stage. Then picture the largest party you've ever seen where no one is sitting down. This was the hip-hop concert.
"I grew up on the hip hop legends who performed tonight, so I was so into the concert that I felt like crying almost!" declared Pamela Jordan of North Carolina. "They were so feeding off our energy and us giving them love that they were video recording us! People have not stopped talking about it! Many were talking about the concert every day since as the best one so far. Anyone in their 40s who missed this one missed a piece of history."

This is what I experienced at Represent Night on Day One!
"Whatta you have?"
"Whatta you have?"
"What's up, Atlanta?" You know ... the phrase from the popular restaurant in the ATL.
Place your order for another serving of fun, excitement and more fun as we kick off Day Two of the cruise. You will need it after Day One at Represent Night. That's what's up.
Salt & Pepa deejay Spinderella was on the wheels mixing up the sound, and the crowd was on and popping! Yes, the place was jumping! Five hundred people were on the Promenade deck doing the Cupid Shuffle, stomping the yard with Spinderella.
Everybody wore their T-shirts to represent their hometowns, favorite sports teams, Greek affiliations and creative expressions. Some of them that impressed me most read like this:
- "The swine flu didn't keep me from coming on this cruise."
- "What happens with girlfriends stays with girlfriends."
Wake up, Atlanta -- and the rest of those representing. Get ready for Day Two!
