Congratulations, you've landed your job or your first step in beginning a new career.
Now what?
Here are a few pointers to help you get started on that very important first day.
1. Take notes. Grab a pad and start writing. Write down names (ask them how they're spelled if you're not sure), facts (where stuff is located, the copy machine, bathrooms, elevators, stairs, location of people you're working with and/or for.
2. Ask questions. My government professor at college once told me: "There's no such thing as stupid questions. If you don't know, don't guess. ASK!
3. Study the files. It will give you important details on what's happening in the past, present and in the future. It will give client names, email addys, phone numbers and all the other important details that you must know in order to do your job properly.
4. Find out if lunch is staggered. That means lunch can start anywhere from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Find out when your lunch break is and for how long.
5. Keep a Work Journal. Put in your success stories as well as your failures. You can learn from both as you job and/or career takes off.
6. Stay away from office gossip. It doesn't help you perform your job better.
7. Remember, you are there to work and earn your pay. You are there to learn new skills and additional experience. You're not in the office to make friends, text message, play computer games or watch porno movies.
More tomorrow.
