From the cryptozoology files, we're going to look today at rods, those magical, mystical living UFO's that inhabit the invisible shadowlands of Earth.
Rods are said to be flying creatures, from a few inches to a few feet in length, that are invisible to humans, but visible to cameras, both film and digital, both still and video. Their bodies are shaped like long thin rods, and their only appendages are wavy wings, one on each side, stretching the full length of their bodies. They move through the air by undulating these wings, like eels swimming through water.
A gentleman (using that term very loosely - R.Rattus) named Jose Escamilla claims to be the discoverer of rods. On his web site, Roswellrods.com, he says that he first captured rods on video in 1994. He says he was taping UFO's when he accidentally filmed the rods as well. Since Mr. Escamilla did not recall seeing any such thing in person while he was taping, he decided the most likely explanation for his video is that he'd discovered a new species of flying creature that is invisible to humans, and only shows up on film or video.
Since then, innumerable photographs and videos have surfaced that purport to show rods. Search the Internet, and you'll find hundreds of them.
If rods are as ubiquitous as it would seem they are, why is their existence not generally accepted? Justification for the existence of rods requires that four basic claims be proven or at least shown to be reasonable:
1.
There should be zoological precedences for the existence of undiscovered insects up to a meter in length. New species are being discovered all the time, so I think we should grant this one. It's certainly possible that there are undiscovered flying creatures a meter in length.
2.
We must accept the existence of creatures that are invisible, although they're up to a meter in length and perhaps up to several inches wide. Discounting microscopic organisms, the natural world offers no better than transparency, such as that found in some species of jellyfish. Transparency is not invisibility. Supporters of rods have not proven that invisibility in the animal kingdom is possible, and they will need to do so by presenting an invisible animal.

Certain images must be visible only in the output of all types of visible wavelength cameras, but not visible to the naked eye. When cameras output their images to the final medium, be it film, paper, or a video screen, we see their output because our eyes see the same visible wavelengths that were recorded and output. We're not talking about thermographic or other non-visible-wavelength camera technologies here, so rod supporters will need to prove that all standard cameras can convert certain invisible wavelengths into visible ones, without affecting the visible wavelengths; which is something those cameras were not designed to do. Only with this proof can it be reasonably accepted that it's possible for a camera to see something that was invisible to the photographer.

Even if all of the above can be substantiated, there needs to be a lack of a more likely explanation. If a simple procedure can be shown to easily reproduce the appearance of rods on camera, then we haven't even established that there is a phenomenon to be investigated.
As you might expect, there is indeed an alternate explanation, and a simple procedure to take a picture showing rods. Picture yourself standing with the sun at your back, facing a large shaded area, such as the shaded entrance to a cave. Dragonflies (or other insects) are flying everywhere, darting back and forth at around 20mph, which is about 29 feet per second (dragonflies can hit 60mph). Take a photograph, with a common shutter speed of 1/30th of a second. In that time, the dragonfly will travel about 12 inches. Because your exposure is set for the dark background, the path traced by the dragonfly's transit will be overexposed and will appear solid white. The dragonfly will make one full wingbeat in in that time (some insects would beat their wings twenty times in 1/30th of a second), so the path described by its wingtip on your film image would be one full sine wave period, twelve inches long. There would be one of these sine waves down each side of the twelve-inch-long rod shaped track traced by the dragonfly's moving body.
This phenomenon is so common that most any professional photographer can tell you about being plagued by it while trying to take outdoor photographs or video in similar lighting conditions. Nevertheless, the resulting image is strange enough that someone not familiar with photography basics might conclude that the subject in the photograph was in fact twelve inches long with undulating wings, and the photographer would be absolutely correct in stating that he did not see any twelve inch long flying creatures with his naked eye.
The conclusion from all this is that rods are a well known, well established, and well understood byproduct of photography. The proposed alternate explanation, that they are an unknown and invisible lifeform only seen by cameras, requires that some pretty outrageous claims about invisibility and photography be proven. Until they are, or until a rod is captured and can be studied, I see no reason to suspect that such things might exist.As eSCAMilla chooses to attempt to mislead his acolytes on the subject of science.... heres some real INFORMATION

You sort of have to get past the sarcasm and humourus taint of the article, but to me it makes sense that they could really be physical evidence of rods! What if rods are simply descendants of the Cambrian Anomalocarids that were discovered in the Burgess Shale. For some reason, the Burgess shale fossils are only soft parts (I believe), not typical of fossils, but what is these genera are all transparent, or at least not visible in humans spectrum of light, and are only visible when steinkerns of their former self are left in the fossil record. Am I crazy, who knows, but its intruiging to think about.

Rods and Full Moon

I was wondering if anyone has associated rods with the full moon? On May 9/09 I saw rods (7 of them) between midnight and 12:30 a.m. I was standing on a balcony watching for the full moon to rise above the tree line when the rod flew directly at me. I leaned back away from it as it went right by my face. My mother saw it also. Not 5 minutes later I saw two one after another headed the opposite direction. I then again saw four more. It was amazing. The rod was approximately 12 inches long (it was black in color) and had two appendages one on either side one farther up and the other farther back on the rod. I had seen one a few years ago in the daylight and it also was black in color. I am a firm believer it whatever they are. Maybe they are an alien life form, who knows, all I know is what I saw and what I believe. Like I said I am wondering if other people have noticed that the full moon has something to do with the sightings???

repeated sightings

I have sighted 12 rods in west/northwest Chapel Hill, NC in the past month.
Twice I saw two rods in the same evening...once both going west to northwest
and today one going north to west in the sky. All sightings are between 6:10 and 7:15 pm.
One rod was traveling at incredible speed tonight (o4/01/2009)...not am Aprol Fool's joke!

The sighting lasted about 50 seconds.
The ROD appeared VERY large and moving sw to nw
at a VERY high speed. The sighting lasted for the 50 seconds
because of the size. The sighting was at 5.50 pm. I was not
able to photograph it because I was observing through the kitchen window.

While my husband and I were on vacation in Canun, Mexico in 2003,we had our picture taken on the back deck ,out looking the ocean,of the Hard Rock Cafe'. In the very middle between my husband and I a rod showed up, it was horizontal,just below our necks down to below our waist.I am going to look for the pic and then I will post it. I have always been curious about the supernatureal ,well my father ws buried the day before we left on this vacation and when the rod showed up in the picture my husband joked that it was my dad just following us.I had never heard about rods prior to that so I was unsure what it was. Then I was watching the History channel and a program came on about flying creatures and I realized that that is what this is. I will find it and post it asp.I mean it looks almost like I am holding a stick which is impossible because I had a beer in that hand.I will posy soon amd then you can give me opinion,

just finished watching the rods episode of Monster Quest. What a load of BS, if feel bad for Jose who tries to prove to people that these things are real. the people of roswellrods.com already know that cameras are capable of doing and how images can be distorted to show an alleged rod. However, what were those rock carvings from 1000s of years ago? they only mentioned that for a minute and proceeded to disprove rods throughout the show. the clip that they left out from the base jumping video is where the rod precisely swoops below a base jumper and vanishes out of frame. I dont know what kind of bird insect, bat, or any known animal that can fly that precise and fast. let me know what you think

Rods over Mexico City

About 5 or 6 years ago. I was living in Mexico City and attended to the Zocalo ( main square) for Mexico's Independence celebration at night time.
There were a lot of lights on top of buildings, it was very iluminated. I was walking with my familiy in middle of the crowd. And I look up to the sky and I see a bunch of these Rods flying at a high altitude.
I saw some pigeons flying at a lower altitude. That's why it was so strange to see something else flying in the sky. Up till now I found about the flying Rods.
Now it makes sence that what I saw that night were Fly Rods.
I invite people to observer the skies at night and keep your camcorder ready.

I had a experience when I was a child upon waking up laying in bed I felt a sensation of something entering my left ear canal. It was not a bug but it felt like a twisting and it entered my brain. I have not told anyone about this except my mom. Maybe it was a rod. It seems to me that it was and I was wondering if any other person has experienced this before?

Hello. I looked at all the videos people have taken on the rods phenom! I think it's totaly cool that Jose made this discovery. I also think it's cool that these things have been video taped in all parts of the world.
Who's going to be the first to capture one? What are they made of? Are they from another demision? I saw some experts on the net that explained what they were. The truth is nobody knows.... yet.

When boaters think about unwanted life forms in Owasco Lake , things like Eurasian watermilfoil and Japanese knotweed generally come to mind. They're not too worried about sea serpents.
Maybe they should be, given a report published in The Post-Standard in 1889.
According to the article, reprinted in " Hidden Headlines of New York ", several fishermen said they had seen a large serpent in the shallow finger lake that stretches south of Auburn. The paper published the account two of them gave of a July 7 incident.
"The two men were trolling near Buck' Point yesterday afternoon, when they noticed a long, dark object in the water some yards away. The object, which was at first thought to be a tree trunk, was moving against the wind and waves. In order to get a better view of the object, the two men stood up in the boat, only to see the monster disappear under the water. Several others whose veracity is not usually questioned claim to have seen the serpent."
Any more recent sightings out there? A living, aquatic dinosaur could make folks forget about all those pesky crows. - Blog post
