I am active in a number of environmental and conservation related organizations in Delaware such as Delaware Audubon, the Kent County Conservancy, GreenWatch Institute, the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary as well as others.  I got interested in the environment after reading Rachel Carson's Silent Spring in 1963. In 1970, I enlisted in the Navy upon learning that my lottery number for the Viet Nam draft was 51.  I was trained as a reactor operator aboard a nuclear submarine, believing that I could have a career in the nuke power industry after my enlistment.  In 1970, nuke power was being promoted as a clean and cheap way to produce electricity.  After spending 6 years in the Navy, I became an ardent anti-nuke.  I have an undergraduate degree in Public Administration and a Masters degree in Energy & Environmental Policy.  I spent about 25 years working in senior management positions in state environmental agencies in Missouri, Delaware and Pennsylvania.  I am currently employed as a senior consultant for an engineering consulting firm that has embraced sustainability and the use green technologies and practices in development.  I have a large collection of works by Lewis Mumford who I consider my virtual intellectual mentor.  I believe we are doomed to ultimate failure as a species unless we are able to devise an economic system that is compatible with the cycles of the natural world and the limits of the earth's natural resources.  This concept is defined in the theory of "ecological economics" and "natural capital" as expressed in the works of such authors as Gretchen Daily, Robert Costanza, Geoffrey Heal, Herman Daly, Lester Brown, William McDonough, Amory Lovins and Paul Hawken.   

Interests and hobbies:
I enjoy kayaking, birdwatching, hiking, reading (about the environment), and visiting wineries.
