George E. Buttner, Author’s Brief Bio
Since getting sober in 1986, I have been actively apart of an A.A. recovery program. After a six-month treatment, I managed four halfway houses in Detroit, Michigan for recovering alcoholics until 1988. During this period, I took classes on peer counseling, but eventually I went back to work at my trade, as a Master Bookbinder.
Ironically, in 1994 a drunk driver hit me. This devastating auto accident broke my back, and so I moved from Michigan, to Eureka, in Northern California to recuperate. After the accident, as part of my retraining, Social Services (Voc. Rehab.) sent me to school, which was located amid the big redwood trees we call the heartwoods.
After my first semester (4.0), I settled into this academic awakening and began creating for myself a brand new life. Much to my amazement, while studying Chemical Dependency Counseling, I made the President’s Honor Roll, the National Dean’s List, the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society and I graduated with highest honors in May of 1997.
I hold a California State Certificate of Achievement in Chemical Dependency Family Counseling, and I now have 21 years experience as a public speaker on recovery. Truly, I became a brand new Heartwood Creation.
Other course work includes a college two-semester field study as a counselor on the after-effects of long-term child abuse at the local Eureka Senior Resource Center and some of these ideas have found there way into my writing. An Unsuspecting Trap , Tate Publishing , materialized from this late in life learning curve.
Now trying my hand at being a small publisher, The Siren’s Cup , Alcohol and the Human Race, reloaded -- HEARTWOOD CREATIONS is also available.
My short stories on alcoholism have appeared in various news magazines, and these articles have generated great interest from national politicians, including two Presidents, Bill Clinton and George Bush. Both have written me letters, as well Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas, whose words I cherish today.
Besides writing two books, other published works include, “My Sweater’s Recovery, A Boys Cannon Dreams, Portals into Forever, A New Writers Dilemma, The Progressive Nature of Alcoholism, and, The Things All Alcoholics Have In Common.” My short story on hitting bottom, titled, “The End Days”, was considered for possible inclusion in the Forth Edition publication of the text, Alcoholics Anonymous (The Big Book). I have a passion for poetry and fair play as well. As other new stories are developed, I will add them to my web site, heartwoodcreations.org
I am now retired, active in my district, and I continue going to A.A. meetings and working with other alcoholics in the small beach community of Oceanside, California. It has led me into a rich rewarding lifestyle.
God Bless, George E. Buttner
