10k follow up run Shady Grove

There was a very good turn out at Shady Grove for a run yesterday morning. It was nice to see so many people that want to keep the momentum going and they should! 10 weeks of training was a huge committment and you should not give up now! Just think how much better next year's race will be if you continue to train. Shady Grove Y is trying to keep a somewhat organized Saturday run going, so check it out if interested. We suffered through a lot of cold weather but now spring is here. Don't be surprised if all the sudden on a warm day your performance isn't what you had hoped. This happens as the weather gets warmer. I know it happened to me and I was so disappointed in myself until our Caoch Dan pointed out that it takes a while for your body to adjust to the heat. If I did adjust, I don't know if I realized it because it was just darn hard to keep training through the summer. But I am glad I did!So, have you signed up for your next race?

You have finished the Monument 10K! I truly hope you had a great day and are proud of the accomplishment! I am so excited that everyone in our small running group had a PR today! And it is all from supporting each other and the great fellowship we have found through running! You all are the best! I didn't make my goal of breaking an hour but was close at 1:01 which was 6 minutes better than last year. And I remembered the fact I ran a Half Marathon 6 days ago. (no excuse really, since April did outstanding in both).I hope all of you 10K training team participants want to continue your fitness efforts. If running just isn't your thing, find something you love to do...walking, working out at the Y! There are great friends to be had at the YMCA as well! Thanks to all the great volunteers along the course and especially our great volunteer coaches! I will be back next year reaching for another PR!Keep on running!

The Shamrock Half Marathon is over and we did well, sticking to the plan we made while training. We planned to finsh by 2:20 and actually finished at 2:19. The training paid off...I had plenty of energy left to pick it up at mile 11 and sprint it home at mile 12! Thanks to Coach Dan and a special thanks to my running buddy Dave who paced us on his Garmin the whole half marathon. He pulled me back when I would randomly speed up.So, for Saturday, try to stick to whatever plan you have. Do not go out there and try to do something totally diiferent than you did in training and you will be successful! Most of all, have fun!! It is a great race, lots of entertainment so enjoy!

It's that time of year again...basketball! Don't stay up too late, you have rest to get so you can keep up with training! Seriously, life is short so enjoy as much as you can!I am "tapering" this week for the Shamrock Half Marathon on Sunday. Can't say I haven't enjoyed the shorter runs and a little more sleep. The shorter runs have felt really good. Next week everyone will be "tapering" for the 10K. Coach Dan wrote about this in his newsletter this week, please heed the advice. Training extra hard next week will not result in a better 10K.On a sad note, a friend of mine from the world of "dog sports" I participate in passed away from cancer this morning. She was my age and this time last year she was preparing to walk the 10K. I remember seeing her cheering section of dogs and people along Monument last year and I was really touched. She lived everyday to it's fullest following her diagnosis, competing in agility with her dogs up to her last days. Remember, life is short, give it all you have!

Week 9 at Shady Grove was so much fun! Never thought it would be so much fun to "only" run 6 miles! It was great to see Coach Dan! It was sad to say goodbye to Coach John, but he promised we would have a post 10K get together run. Next week a few of us head to the National Half Marathon and the Shamrock Half, so we were honored with lovely hats and headbands to wear yesterday. And April got a special one for that and her birthday! Also found out one of our awesome coaches is doing the Full Shamrock Marathon next weekend. The rain held off for our intermediate group but I think the novice and walkers got some rain. This will only help you prepare in case race day is wet. Some of you accomplished your longest distance ever yesterday and I hope you are proud of that! I saw a lot of faces that I recognize from the previous two years. A lot of people seem to enjoy this 10K training team, and rightly so!This week is a "taper" week for us doing the half marathons next weekend so we have to be sure to not overdo and stay injury free. Next week will be a taper week for the 10k, as well as a recovery week following the half. I am not sure how that will work out, I have never done back to back short races much less two longer ones! Guess I will find that out soon.April looks so good in her headband..and that was after she ran! I don't look that good after running...

This is it for me for 10k Saturday runs. This is my last training run at Shady Grove because next weekend I will be heading down to Va Beach for the Shamrock Half Marathon. I need to say bye to John Hurley...he has been the best coach and has realized that a few of us have been doing more than 10k training. And tomorrow Coach Dan will be at Shady Grove too! Dan has been an inspiration for even doing a half marathon. He coached a small group of us last summer and fall for the Richmond Half in addition to coaching a Marathon Trasining Team for Sportsbackers! His dedication to the sport is awesome, and he has been a friend as well.It is going to be cold and damp tomorrow for our run but remember, it could be like that on race day so it is good training! We had some glorious days earlier this week that were good for running and for me to get some great rides in on my horse friend Kurt. Give it your best tomorrow despite the weather, and remember how far you have come! Thanks April for being the only buddy that showed up on Tuesday..even though we struggled we were there!

Donuts Shady Grove week 7

I guess the weather gods heard my plea of enough is enough, the weather was just about perfect for running Saturday morning. I hope your 5 or 7 miles went well! Those of us also training for the Shamrock and Naional Half did 12 miles. That donut tasted soooo good! Donuts are a luxury I usually do not indulge in, as being in the over 50 slow metabolism group. But after the 12 I allowed myself! I can still taste it. Thanks to Shady Grove Y for providing the donuts and coffee. The coffee was great too! Just three more weeks of training! Have you made new friends? I hope so. Are you feeling more fit than when you began! Most definitely, I am sure! Remember where you were 7 weeks ago, and keep the momemtum going. Maybe someone will have donuts for you after the 10K!Today was a rest day, but I couldn't resist a wonderful ride over the hills and fields of Goochland on Kurt the wonder horse...he did most the work!

Enough is enough! I am ready to get back outside to run. I missed Monday and Tuesday but got in 4 miles on the "dreadmill" this morning. Tomorrow is still going to be too risky to run outside before dawn so it looks like another inside day. Thank goodness for the I Pod. Probably I will opt for a crosstraining class Friday morning and just be a little short on mileage this week. But I will make up for it Saturday with the twelve miles I have to do for half marathon training!I need to get the new shoes out, so a treadmill run might be a good way to start them out before Saturday. I hope no one has gone stir crazy with this weather and that you have found ways to keep the training going somewhat. I only like snow the first day it falls...then it can melt! We may even complain it's too warm on Saturday!

We escaped the bad weather Saturday fortunately. Andrea scolded me for not wearing my new shoes and after the run I wished I had worn them! I will get them out this week. But now we are paying for the weather break on Saturday. I am trying to figure out how to get the training in this week and it's not going to be easy. The YMCA is opening late and I work, so if I can't get there at 5 or 6 am I cannot make it. And I know there will not be a treadmill available in the evening. Maybe a cardio class will work if they do not close early tomorrow. I thought about checking out the streets tomorrow evening for a quick run before the freeze again. That probably will not be wise at rush hour! If we have built a fairly good base thus far, this light week should not set us back too badly. Just don't overdo and try to make up for it all at once!Sorry for the short blog...feeling a little emotionally drained from having to put our 21 month old lab puppy down yesterday due to kidney disease. But my running buddies have really helped get me through this. They are the best!

Rain?

It looks like a possibility of rain Saturday morning for our runs/walks! We have been lucky this year as we have not had any precipitation so far! Get ready...I ran last year's 10K in the rain so it never hurts to be prepared! The sun was out by the time the walkers started off, but for us runners it was wet.If you want to stay dry, then don't come out if it is raining Saturday! Plan to get wet if you do come out on Saturday...and you should! Just know you are going to get wet and prepare for it. It really isn't so bad. Make sure you wear "wicking" type clothes. If you wear clothes that really absorb water, they are going to weigh you down and make you feel miserable. I also like to wear a baseball type cap in the rain because I do not like the rain dripping in my face and that type of brim helps! And wear your regular walking or running shoes. They will get wet but you do not want to hurt yourself by wearing another type shoe or old shoe because the weather is bad. If your shoes get wet, pull the insoles out, stuff them with newspaper and let them dry...they should be fine.Let's hope the forecast is more optimistic and that we miss the rain on Sasturday! But if not, remember you have come to far to let a little wet weather dampen your progress!

It was cold again yesterday! It still amazes me to see the frost on everyone's fleece! It was four miles for the novice/walkers and five again for the Intermediates. It looked like everyone was doing really well! Andrea was really pleased with her time - she was out in front of all of us! April and I pushed for 11 miles yesterday to keep with the half marathon training and Dave hung in there for about 9.A few weeks ago April wrote about new shoes...well I should know better by now about putting off the new shoes because it always leads to injury. The ball of my left foot has been getting more sore with each run and I have a new pair of shoes sitting in the closet! I am just such a miser I want to stretch it out as long as I can! I am a runner that strikes hard and I tend to go through shoes a little on the quick side. Well, I better make the move soon before I pay with an injury. Please, make sure your shoes are serving you well and that your clothes are too! You need to be as comfortable as possible while training. The great coaches we have are a wonderful resource on both! Happy running this week!

Some Motivation

Today was a day off from running so since I also took the day off from work, I decided to take in a Yoga class at the YMCA. I love yoga but just don't seem to find the time to fit it in my schedule too often. When I arrived at the Y, the previous aerobics class was just finishing and in there was my 82 year old dad! I know both my parents frequent the Y and my dad does these classes at least three times a week, but seeing him look awesome in that class just made my heart swell with love and pride! He is a lot of my motivation because I want to grow old as fit as he is! He has always set an example of being active, trying different things (he ran for several years, learned to be proficient swimmwer as an adult) and telling me if you don't try the race, then you automatically lose it! And by the way, he still has all his original joints and they all are still in good working condition! He has suffered a broken elbow (falling off a ladder 10 years ago) and a back surgery for a disc problem. And he is smart enough to take some time off or change activity when something is hurting. So I hope maybe sharing this bit about my dad will help keep some of the 10k training team motivated! It is all good for you in so many ways! The yoga was great - I really recommend it for good crosstraining! Happy Saturday runs and walks!

I was part of the change of plans for Tuesday. I had a bad sleepless night and did not show up for training. So I was glad my buddies elected not to do the tempo run! But the rest day really helped, April and I did a 3.6 mile tempo run today and I managed to keep up with her and felt good! It helps so much to be flexible and have such committed buddies!I cannot say enough about the friends this running has brought into my life. They are so supportive, not only about our fitness plans but everything in general. Sometimes our runs are therapy sessions! Right now I am faced with the rapidly declining health of my labrador puppy (21 months) that was supposed to be my new running partner since the running became a little too much for my 10 year old dog. So I am sure I will be calling on their support.Happy running and take advantage of all the wonderful people out there training with you! Speak to everyone, and you never know what reward you may get.

Shady Grove week 5

Well, it wasn't too bad after having having enjoyed an over- indulgent Valentine dinner Friday night! Did have a headache, most likely from the two glases of red wine. I had to do 8 miles to keep up with the Shamrock Half training schedule. My one partner David had a family emergency and could not make the run (everythings ok) but my other other buddy Kim showed up at 6:15 to do the extra 3. Overall, it was a pretty good daY. The 5 miles with the 10k team was a little tough on Kim since she has had a cold this past week. I was there two weeks ago. If you just aren't up to it, just do what you can do...no need to push yourself too hard! Remember the body needs rest to recover and build strength!I am just amazed at the number of runners showing up for the training...keep up the good work! You will be amazed at what you can accomplish. So what about April with her blazing fast time in the Sweetheart 8K! Under 46 minutes! She is definitely going to finish the 10k in less than an hour! Remember, just last year at this time she was in the novice group for 10K training!

I am tired this week! I have a couple of running buddies that have really picked up the pace this week and I am struggling! Monday was hardly a "recovery"run. I kept up but was panting hard at the end. And hold a conversation? No way! They kicked my behind! Today's tempo run was a little better, but still challenging. One of my buddies stayed along with me while the two speedsters went on ahead! They really only finished about 25 seconds ahead. But I am feeling it this week. Tomorrow will be a crosstrain day (Spinning), then the 4 mile on Thursday and finally a rest day Friday! Well, they say it's good to run with faster runners if you want to get faster yourself!Keep the good work everyone and take your rest day!

Shady Grove Week 4 - Hills!

Did you love or hate the hill route Saturday at Shady Grove? I know the Intermediates did the awesome hills across Nuckols road. And how can you slow to walk up a hill when Coach John is standing at the top waiting to "high five " you! I can't do it! And that is what kept me going yesterday. I had already run 5 miles with two of my buddies prior to the 10k hills, so it was challenging. And I had my buddy David (who also signed up for the Shamrock Half) along side reminding me of proper form up every hill...shorten stride, chest up and out a little, chin down slightly and as Coach Dan always says...arms down and back. Having a strong core will help also. Remember that hills are our "friends", making us stronger and better runners. I didn't really believe this but last year my buddies and I committed to doing that Shady Grove Hill route at least once a week and we all noticed an improvement. Some days we were great on the hills... and other days we had to take a rest break. We always committed to never stop on the hill and if we had to rest we would do it after accomplishing the hill. Hey team- the Monument 10k is flat - so if you can conquer the hills you will be better for it on race day! What about April and her 5 mile accomplishment yesterday? She was way ahead of me. Lets all give her positive cheers for the Sweetheart 8k next Saturday so she can enter the National Half! And Kim - made my heart melt when you showed up with us at 6am yesterday! Themnyou kept up that blistering pace with Andrea and April.Keep up the great work team and enjoy this glorious weather today. Pat yourself on the back for a job well done and take a deserved rest day!

Rest days

Today was a "rest day' and I loved the extra 90 minutes of sleep, but still had to go out in the cold to walk the dogs, something I do twice a day, everyday! Remember through rest you build strength! I also love the quote from our wellness director at work, "If you listen to your body when it whispers, you will never have to hear it scream". How true is this? Think about it! So take your rest when you need it and enjoy - you deserve it. And reading April's blog today...rest is a reward too!Tomorrow is cold...I think we have already decided to run on the treadmills at the Y. That is very boring for me so I listen to the I POD. I find I have to cover the screen of the treadmill with my towel so I stop looking at it thinking "how much longer?"I have to share the best compliment I got today...ran into someone I worked with 14 years ago and he said "You haven't changed a bit, what have you been doing?" I thanked him and said "RUNNING and working out! Keep up the great work 10K team!!

Four of us met this morning to do the 4 mile run posted in the training schedule for the Intermediate group. One of us felt really good, one of us struggled and two of us were so -so, but all finished in good time! Again, the importance of good buddies! And the temperature was not so bad. However, it might be kind of cool to run in some light snow tomorrow morning if it is not slippery! Our schedule for tomorrow is 30 minutes of weight training at 5am at the Y, then the 35 minute tempo run. If the weather is too bad, we will run on the treadmills.Yesterday was beautiful, I went for a hour ride on my horse friend Kurt....lovely! And thankfully today I got my Springsteen tickets for May 5 at JPJ...remember "tramps like us, baby we were Born to Run". (I have a t-shirt with that quote.) So, training team members, keep up the great work, use your awesome coaches and go for it! Try to follow the schedule but listen to your body...if you need a day off, take it!

10K Training Shady Grove week 3

Today is a rest day on my training schedule - one day to sleep late!!! Well, thanks to my two dogs they decide to break through the baby gate at the bottom of the stairs at 6:50 am and create a ruckus outside my bedroom door! Not a day of rest for them, time for food and walk you lazy mom! The intermediate group training run was hard for me yesterday - an off day definitely but I can blame it on a cold all last week and missing a day of training! I really struggled but completed even more than the 5 miles...almost 6 so that tells you if you hang in there you can even finish on bad days. And one of my devoted running buddies hung in there with me whcih helps a lot! But I did remember as we headed up Nuckols Road to Shady Grove Rd for the first mile...two years ago when I first did 10k training with the novice group I could not run that same first mile! So stick with it and you will be truly amazed at yourself! And hook up with some buddies! 10k training is where I met mine and we are still running and working out together more than two years later!
