  • What was your first car?

My first car was a 'Datsun Sunny'. It was a sort of metallic pale green with four doors. And it was a show room model - so in pretty good shape.

I was very lucky to have it and used to drive my friends around in it.

I am still very fond of Datsuns - or Nissan's as they are called now! And now drive a Dark Green Nissan Primera.

I find they hold the road very well and are good for short people as the car seat can be pushed forwards so I can reach the pedals! I drive my teenagers around in it - and their friends too. It's a great car and very reliable.

My first car was a 2CV - it ran on fresh air!.  I loved my 2CV and called her Tootsie - she was rickety and cold in the winter and certainly wasn't the best car for driving up through the mountains where I live, particularly if I'd been for the weekly shop..a couple of those 3 litre bottles of milk and a few cans of beans in the boot would have that poor car wheezing up the hills at 10mph!

Also, the front passenger door wasn't the best and whenever I gave my larger-than-life friend a lift home from work she used to have to pull hard on the string on the door when we turned left or else she'd have been deposited in the gutter!

Then there was the iffy windscreen wipers.  They rarely worked but I found that by cutting a potato in half and wiping the half spud over the windscreen kept the glass clear of rain even in the heaviest deluge.

Of course, one day the MOT man finally shook his head and passed the death sentence on Tootsie.  It was a sad day and driving since has never been as much fun as when I drove Tootsie from A to B with my fingers crossed every trip Surprised

Oh I can relate to both of these..I had a Datsun Cherry first. One day the dustbin lorry was round and it bumped my little car at the back and dented it all the way down!! It was green as well.

A few cars later I had a green and white 2CV...I loved it so much. It burst into flames whilst driving home from work one day!!!

Now I have a little Mitsubishi i...if you 'google' it you will see it is a funny shaped little thing. However, it's automatic (and now I wouldn't change back to manual) and runs on fresh air..and £35 a year road tax.

Previous to this I had a green Ford Ka. It used to give me nightmares by telling me 'this green car will kill you'...no joking..this happened frequently and I didn't dare tell anyone as it seemed stupid. In the end I had to change it though I was scared stiff of that car.  No more green cars though...they aren't good to me...

  • My first car

my first car was a 1930 Hillman ,mostly made from baked bean tins which were pop riveted over the rust on the doors and most of the body . The valves got burnt out ,as i was driving concrete trucks at a building site at heath row airport ,we pull down a building with aviation fuel tanks so it ran on that fuel diluted with t.v.o like paraffin it sure could fly down the bath rd ,Since then i have had too many cars to keep count at the moment i have a 3.8 Lt Holden lumina[ Vauxhall] in time i may go down to a 2.4 a little more economical

  • My first car

I had four children aged 9,8,7 & 6 in my late 20's.  A busy mum & the kids all had so many different interests in different places.  It made sense to learn to drive just then.

After passing my test (1st time), I bought a bright red Triumph 1500.  I went to pick it up, drove off only to find it wouldn't change into 2nd gear.  Luckily I had been raised with the knowledge of double de clutching, so got round this.

I loved this car & it proved so useful to get the kids out & about & a new found freedom for me too.

Finances were tight at the time & I had to apply to my bank for the a loan of £450.  I was told that I would have to submit a 1/3 rd of this.  I only had £115, so to raise the £35 needed, I sold my washing machine & hand washed for the next few years.  That's the way it was then, but happy days!

  • My own first car

My husband tried to teach me to drive in his ancient Hillman minx but I had a terrible time with it- and him! So he booked me proper lessons with an instructor who looked like Father Christmas (white hair and beard) His car was a Vauxhall Chevette and I loved it, so much so that when I passed my test (second time around) I bought one.

I used to tell peope I drove a "chevvy" hoping they would think I had a big American limo....
