Why not the Beach?

The holidays have finally arrived, and for Southern California it seems that winter is already over. While everyone one is bundled up in their snow gear and hitting the slops, us Socal kids are eagerly anticipating the soon to come new season of beach volleyball! The dates and cities have not been released yet, (trust me I check the site daily) only building the anticipation!

Every year when schedule is released I am always excited to see if there are any changes in the locations from the past years. If there are changes I always wonder why they changed, especially if they take away an event that is on a real beach and replace it with an oversized parking lot sand box. I mean no offence to those cities without a coast,( I do love me some Vegas) it just seems untrue to the sport of BEACH volleyball. There are plenty of coastal cities in the US that embrace beach volleyball and have never had a chance to hold a tournament. Or what about places know all around the world for their beaches like Hawaii or Mexico?

Why not reach out to more beach cities rather than bring a beach sport to land lock? Beach volleyball is a lifestyle and should be preserved that way. The essence of the beach volleyball is the beach, so lets get some more BEACH!!

  • Why not Oceanside?! OK, it's not the south bay, but it's a sweet spot for the AVP.

And, ladybird, it's on the coast (alongside the ocean...Oceanside). I bet it's 70 and sunny at the pier right now, so let's volley it up!

But I must disagree with regard to your push that the AVP abandon landlocked markets and only go to coastal locations. Atlanta and Glendale were pretty cool considering those spots are parking lots most of the time. If the AVP can pull it off, why not go for it?

"Oversized parking lot sand box"??? Give me a break. I say it's more about fan support and the vibe that epitomizes beach volleyball than the proximity to an ocean everyone pees in anyway.

The coast is sweet, but it's the people that make the AVP. And 75% not a good enough ratio for coastal events? Where there is fun and desire is where the tour should go. How's that for the essence of beach volleyball?
