Using Blogs and Social Networks to Grow Your Business Online

In my Contemporary Business Communications class I read an article from Businessweek.com called “Social Media Will Change Your Business”. It starts how talking about how most of the blogs out their have nothing but useless junk on them. The report continues about how there is about 2-5 million good ones out there on topics ranging from Business to Entertainment and Motorsports to Gardening or cooking. Those top rank blogs don't get the bulk of internet traffic but the amount visitors that they do get is nothing to sneeze at with some of theses getting couple hundred thousands of viewers to a few million viewers a month. Blogs are very affected way of getting your business message out and getting consumer feedback. Think about even if your business Blog gets a small fraction of monthly Internet traffic like less then 1%, you are still getting a huge amount of people traveling to your business blog. According to http://internetworldstats.com as of June 30, 2008 that there are 360,985,492 people that have Internet that is about 22% of the world population with the number growing everyday. Image getting about ½ of a percent of them or even 1/10 of percent of them. That is about 360985 to 1804927 people a month traffic with it growing everyday like I said. Think about it everybody image that you are getting this type of traffic to your GBG sites and blogs, your business communities would be exploding, so use your blogs as vital part of building your GBG business. Are you Fired Up! Yet. Blogs are not the best part. There is new thing called Social Networking that is huge, I'm just kidding I bet almost all of you either have a Myspace, Facebook, Tweeter, etc account or know someone one that has one. Every Presidential Candidate have one, many of those running for the Senate or Congress have one.

Stats from FaceBook.com as of January '08

General Growth
* More than 60 million active users
* An average of 250,000 new registrations per day since Jan. 2007
* An average of 3% weekly growth since Jan. 2007
* Active users doubling every 6 months

Stats from MySpace.com as of January '08

· MySpace has more than 110 million monthly active users
around the globe
· We are the country’s most trafficked site on the Internet
· 85% of MySpace users are of voting age (18 or older)
· 1 in 4 Americans is on MySpace
· in the UK it’s as common to have a MySpace as it is to own a dog

So do you see why companies want to have a Social Network Page. The way for me to describe social networks is to think about a High School Cafeteria where you have your different groups. The sports enthusiast are in one spot, the music lovers are in one spot, the poets have their spot, etc. With social networks someone can belong to a group that is about Dragracing, a group about Hunting or the outdoors, a group of rock music lovers, country music lovers, and a group to support your Candidate for President. What cool about social networks if Nike wanted to place an ad about their new running shoe they can pay myspace or whatever site to place the ad on the home page of anyone who is a runner and that makes the ad targeted right to the group in mind. By placing ads that way companies or whatever do have to spend so much on traditional media like TV, Radio and Newspapers that it is hit and miss to get their target audience. Also if you are a fan of an artist or company you can become friends with them online and get the latest information about them. Also you can post your feelings about a product or service and companies can use to better the product or service quicker with the instance feedback from the consumers. There is a new site called Twitter.com that works like some the other social networking sites where you can be friends with others online and post messages on each others profile. You can only post a post that is 140 or less characters long like text messaging someone. Steve Rubel who has his own Internet marketing firm did an interview with the author of the Business Week article and the reporter asked why do you use Tweeter and so Steve type on his Tweeter Page “Sitting with Steve Baker, wants to know why tweet?” and with 10 or so minutes there was 20 response why to use tweeter. So to all of you who want to build a successful GBG business use your resources online like your blogs, the social networks like our new Prosperity Wellness Community Forum. So lets go out there and share this great business and our great products while doing that have some fun making money and making a difference in our world. God Bless and Good Night.

  • Yeah social media is starting to be where it's at online. It's hard because there are so many communities to get involved in. There are a few I love but you really have to be organized and have time to stay on top of all of them. I've actually recently stumbled on a new social media company that's up and coming - it's geared around just blogs, similar to Technorati, but I really like their platform. I can't wait to see it explode. Feel free to check it out. Right now I think they are mostly working with pre-registers/invites, but I believe you can still sign up if it's something you like. Check it out: http://fatvine.com I am working now on building a presence on the internet and it is a lot of work...it's one of those things that pays off later. You don't always see the results right away. But they'll be there if you just follow a few simple guidelines. Great info though, thanks for sharing.
