Stick to your guns!

I had to stick to my guns today....my almost 2 year old son was acting like a wild man running laps today during storytime at the library.  He usually wanders around but today he acted like he'd been restrained all morning and I'd let him loose the minute we got there.  He just would not calm down.  I kept threatening to leave reminding him that he would miss the bubbles at the end and he wouldn't get a stamp.  I don't know how many times I warned him of this as I held him in my lap while he wiggled and squirmed to get free.  When another little girl started running because of his poor example, I decided we weren't going to contribute to the delinquency of another.  I grabbed him and all of our stuff and headed for the car.  I was so embarrassed and frustrated.  I was fussing all the way to the car and told him he made mommy sad when he was bad in the library.  He said, "sawee.  sawee."   It was sweet and almost convincing but I didn't go back in.  Later this afternoon I e-mailed Andrea, one of my running buddies who was at storytime with her angel of a daughter.  I told her how embarrassed I was and that I hated to leave.  She wrote back saying that it was refreshing to see a parent actually follow through with their threats eventhough it is hard to do.  Thanks again, Andrea, for helping me feel so much better about sticking to my guns.

This got me thinking about how we need to stick to our guns concerning the commitment we've made to this 10k training team.  I know it is hard to get your runs in but it is really important that you do.  You have already come too far to not give it your all at this point.  You can't let the weather, crazy schedules, or anything else stand in your way.  So, keep up the good work, don't forget how far you have come, and look ahead to how close you are to the finishline!  Stick to your guns!!!  (...what  exactly does that mean anyway?)

  • Thanks, Andrea and Judy, for your support. I only hope he remembers this next week if he starts to misbehave and I have to start with the threats again. We will see... I am so glad to have more experienced moms I can go to if I need help. Thank you both for being there for me!

  • April - you go mom!! I have done the same thing years ago and I do appreciate a parent that follows through on threats. I know it's hard, but then I look at some of the coworkers and employees I have dealt with over the years...did they have parents that believed in discipline??? You are only making a responsible person out of your son!!

  • Angel? Angel? Come on over and see the "angel" that you so sweetly mentioned. My body is aching all over from that cardiobox class yesterday and my little angel thinks I'm a human jungle gym today. She has managed to step, elbow or fall on every muscle on my body as I lay on the floor. I'm trying to think of it as a massage. I would much prefer the massage you mentioned the other day at the Y, but I guess I have to take what I can get :) Enjoy the day!
