Slowly I stride, Step by Step

Okay, I think I’m becoming slightly obsessed with cadence or the rhythm or length of my stride.

Am I expending too much energy because of the shortness of my gate?  If I lengthen it can I increase my distance at the same heart rate?  The problem is my stride feels natural.  Should I work on changing it?

Why can it be so different even between people of the same height?

Some of my running friends have heard me talk about this.  Andrea is 5’8”, I’m 5’11 and yet, if we are running at the same speed she is taking fewer steps than I am!  The other day at the Y, I noticed while April, Matthew, and I were

On treadmills next to each other  that for a couple minutes we were all at the same cadence even though Matthew was running seven (7) minute miles, I was running 8.5 minute miles and April 9.5 minute miles. (mile times are approximate)

I wonder what determines a persons stride?  I’ve heard from an experienced runner that I should try to lengthen my stride and from another that I should not worry about.  Maybe after the 10K I’ll try changing it to see if (1) it is possible or feels unnatural, (2) if it helps my times.

  • I was told by an experienced runner that I actually have a rather long stride considering my height (5'2") so he couldn't figure out why I wasn't going very fast! HA HA HA!!! Usually while running with Kim she will have us all "stretch our legs" for the last little stretch of a run. I definitely feel it working different muscles and wonder if it wouldn't be beneficial to be more conscious of it. I wonder if it would change my time or if I would just get tired faster from trying too hard. Maybe I'll have to test the theory on a shorter run next week.
By the way, what is it you do again, Kevin? Are you some kind of scientist or engineer....all these crazy questions about running. I obviously don't put that much thought into it....one foot in front of the other is all I can manage some days!

  • I just worry about finishing...I know my stride is not long for the long legs I have. I agree with Andrea, you look fine to me and you always finish way ahead! But maybe after the 10k and Half I will try out a longer stride too. Think I need a coach, though!

  • Kevin - if it's all comforting you always look like running is so easy for you. You never look winded, never look like you're struggling, you never look like you might just keel over and yet because I've run with you enough, I know that's not true. I, on the other hand, sound like a freight train, my face turns bright red and I complain a lot. I think you should just stick with your stride and enjoy making the rest of us feel inadequate!
