Racing Excitement

It’s two weeks out from my first race of the season and I am getting psyched to race after all these months. Instead of the typical road race, my season “opener” will be on the track at the Fred Hardy Invitational (formerly the Spider Relays back in my heyday) at U of R.

I figured I should milk it for as long as I can, as long as I can remain competitive and look like a college student! It is certain I will be the oldest (but probably not the oldest looking) in the race. I may stick out, too, since I promised myself I would never wear huggers again in my life. Period.

If you do not know what these are, all I will say is that college girls do not run in shorts.

The last two workouts have really gone smoothly and it is such a great feeling to feel confident, as your legs start to develop the turnover you have been envisioning for two months. Every season, I am fearful that things just won’t click………that the tempos, the intervals, the strides just won’t meld together for a great race. They ALWAYS do. The hardest part is having the confidence in your coach that everything will be in sync.

I think Saturday’s workout at down at Pony Pasture/Riverside Drive was the most mentally demanding I had completed in years. I did 3 times 2 miles hard with only 2 minutes rest b/tn each repeat. I thought I was going to drop dead and puke in the last part of the second repeat. There was no way I would be able to lift my feet for another step! Sure enough, I ran the last 2 miler twenty seconds faster. I still cannot believe it.

While I think I am still tight from Saturday, I am so glad I had a solid workout. There have certainly been many bad ones in the past. Now I need to just rest up and ice my hamstring that I stupidly pulled last night (bounding too high during a drill).

I think I need to go listen to Where the Streets Have No Name now and get some inspiration……..

  • Cool! Any other track races in the future this season, or are you hitting the roads after that? That stretch of pony pasture is great. Unless you're puking, of course. Rest that hamstring!
