We'd like to highlight for our readers the existence of the Italian Jewish Cultural Center of Calabria.

It is led by Rabbi Barbara Aiello (originally from the USA). Rabbi Aiello is the first female rabbi in Italy and a leader in the Progressive Judaism movement there. She has been instrumental in leading efforts in Italy and the US to enable people with Jewish ancestry to re-aquaint themselves with their Judaism.

Following a successful rabbinate in southwest
Florida, Rabbi Barbara Aiello was named spiritual
leader of Synagogue Lev Chadash in Milan, the
first Progressive/liberal synagogue in Italy.

As the first Progressive and first woman rabbi in
Italy her appointment marked the official
beginning of the liberal Jewish movement in Italy.

Since her arrival in 2004, Rabbi Barbara has
assisted in the organization and growth of the
Progressive movement by serving chavurot in
Florence, Rome, Padova and as rabbinic advisor
to Chavurah Or Chadash in Turin, where she led
the first ever Progressive Rosh HaShanah service
in an Italian synagogue.
