Inauguration Day 2009

How Could You Not

You know how every time a black person is in the news for doing something stupid, ignorant or pathetic, we cringe? Because they’re black, we feel some connection to them.

Well, guess what? It works both ways. Whenever someone black is honored for an accomplishment, we as black people get a warm and fuzzy feeling. We’re entitled to it, too. We walk taller and prouder. That's why I do the Black History Fact every day. We need to hear about the good and great things black people have done and are doing every single day.

So, whether you are voting for Barack Obama or not, because he's a black man, he represents you and me if you are black. That should give you chills. Not only is he doing the darn thing; he's got an excellent chance of winning and being our first black president. How could you not support him?

If he’s representing you, why wouldn't you represent him? I’m not talking about someone who is a slug, a questionable guy or a mediocre dude. I’m talking about a person anyone of any race would (and does) support. Other races have a lot of reasons for voting for Obama. So do we. Just one those reasons, for me, is because he’s a black man.

Wanting Obama to win because he’s a black man isn't wrong. Racism and racial pride are two entirely different things. I can't honestly see how anyone who is African-American, no matter what he or she has said publicly, can NOT vote for this qualified black man. As a black man with a father whose wish before he left this earth was to cast a vote for Obama, I could not look at myself in the mirror if I hadn't done all I could to put this black man in office. When my first grandchild is old enough to read about this period in American history and says, “Fly Pop, did you vote for Obama?” I want to look in her eyes and say, “Yes.” I don't know how I could explain it to her if I didn't. I already have to explain why I'm only 23 years old.

I cannot vote in tomorrow’s primary election in Pennsylvania. All I can do until November is to beat the drum as loudly and as boldly as I can for Barack Obama and to encourage everyone to vote for him. If you have a black child or a black grandparent, how could you not?

  • Is a shame someone of your Age Tom will make such a reckless statement, vote for Obama because he is black, but however I could see why you would make such a statement because every now and then I listen to your show, and you pretty much sound racist. Blaming white people for everything. it’s a shame that you celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.', I bet if that great man is looking down on you from heaven he will be totally disapointed, because he was all about trying to get everyone treated equally, trying to get blacks what they deserve, isn't that what it’s about, why do we celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Day and not Malcolm. Tom you need to stop blaming white people for everything on your show, also control the guest on your show about what they say. we black people also need to start taking responsibilities for our actions. Just like yesterday I believe the lady comedian, as least that what she thinks she is, said “white people used us……….”, in regards to what Rev Wright said, how the hell do u blame that on a white man, the moment she started I had to turn my radio off, that was just stupid. Haven’t said all this Tom, I look at both side you do some good raising money for different charity. Vote for the candidate that is right the person that will bring the nation together, who will make this county a better place, not

  • Tom, I could not have said it better myself. You hit the nail on the head with this one. It's like crazy man Wesley Snipes said in Pasenger 57. I always bet on Black. Keep up the good work for our people brother, and do not worry about the haters.

  • Voting for someone just because he is black is not being a conscious voter. It not about style but about substance. What does the nominee, black or white, bring that will cause us to be a better nation? Will he or she be willing to address the hard issue regarding race, class, and gender? Being black just isn't enough. I am proud that a black man is running for the highest office of this land. I am an Obama supporter, not because he is black but because he is the one who will take us in a new direction.

  • Can somebody tell me what's so wrong with being black? I've talked to some black folks that don't support Obama because they compare him to themselves. Guess what folks, he is capable. Why not support him? He's set the bar for our children.

  • I agree with you-how can you NOT support him. We don't know any of the candidates personally and why do we have so much hate that we can't believe in a black man. Hillary has played so dirty that it is hard to support her although I will is she wins. She has really been ugly in this race. I am supporting him because he is smart, has a plan for helping our country and because he is black. Hillary and Barack have very similar policy so you can't really say you are supporting Barack because of the his views on the issues. We are all raising our black children and why wouldn't we want them to see that they can truly be anything they want to be. Come on black people "WAKE UP"!!!!
