Good and Bad

October 19, 2009

Lambeau is on the short list of venues that will forever be recognizable in sports, very similar to Wrigley Field or Joe Louis Arena.  There is an indescribable feeling when you step foot on those grounds, and those who have know what I mean.  I remember my first time going there, last year, the last game of the year.  It was miserably cold, but the faithful showed up in full support of a team that was 5-10.  Needless to say it left a lasting impression on me.

Enough about Lambeau Field and its greatness though, the reality is we are 1-5 heading into the bye.  The bye comes at a good time for us, as we are banged up at various positions and can utilize a week off.  The bye is always a chance to evaluate where you are as a team, and the corrections that need to be made.  So our week will consist of doing those things and then getting a head start on St. Louis.

Back to Sunday, it was nice to play, but not so nice walking away without any points.  I saw Daunte pull up when he scrambled, and my immediate reaction was to get loose, because it looked like his hamstring.  In that situation, you do not have time to stop and think, just merely react and that is what I did.  I had a couple warm-up throws as Daunte handed the ball off one more time and then I went in.

We did not have success my first drive, and I almost got Bryant killed in the process.  After apologizing and warming up more, all I wanted to do was go back out there and move the ball on offense.

In the end, I felt like I did some good things, but throwing two interceptions is something that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.  The game definitely seems to be slowing down for me in comparison to last year.  Because in reality, that was the last time I worked with the first unit in a game situation.

Looking back, I think that is attributed to a couple of things, first, just simply playing and getting more reps this year than I ever have.  Second, is my comfort level with the offense.  I wasn't at the line of scrimmage second guessing myself.

Who knows how many opportunities I will get in this league, but I will always be prepared and do my best.  At the end of the day, those are the things that matter to me. I have yet to see the film, as I am about to head into the facility right now.  So I will withhold further judgment until after I see the film.

  • U know Drew i stick up for u all the time with other Lions fans on the Espn board. They always kill u, but i see something in you. Its us fans out here that root for you and maybe even believe in you more than you do! I think you can be a top tier QB in this league and even if the Lions dont see it some other team will. I can tell by the last game they have you conciously thinking about not using your feet, but man thats a gift! By all means make the tough pocket throws, but in doubt u use them legs. Those INT's wasnt even terrible picks. You were trying to make something happen in a blow game so hold your head up. I believe in you man and i root for you as if i know you or something! I get slack alot but i KNOW its in there. You just have to believe that YOU are what some of us think you are! Forget all these bum coaches prior to this year who tried to down you, YOU HAVE IT MAN!!!! You will get another shot this year at some point and when you do, you go in there and make it happen!!!!!!

  • Good and Bad is about right.. I liked the way you kept the chains moving although I thought you could have used your legs more to get downfield.  That's too good of a skill set for you not to use it at all.  My guess is Stafford isn't ready although he dressed and the coaches didn't want you to get injured.

I liked the pump fake on your first pass but man did B. Johnson get laid out.  In your defense I don't think the safety was playing the ball.. he was lining up Bryant as soon as the ball left your hand.

The first interception obviously wasn't your fault either.  The rookie TE has hands of stone and should have caught that pass.  The second interception however was a forced pass that I think you would like back.

All in all I thought you had a good showing.  If they actually give you a full week of practice with the first team and let you start against the Rams you'll bump Daunte from that second spot.

  • Drew, I've been watching you play since you QB'ed at MSU.  I believe you are the best QB we have on the team, honestly.  Whenever you take the field I have a real sense of hope for the Lions.  I don't want to see anyone get injured but I've also never thought of you as our 3rd string QB.  You HAVE WHAT IT TAKES to be our FRANCHISE QB.  Keep your head up.  Feel the potential in you and then BE THAT.    You have a lot of fans out here who want to see you play and believe that YOU could lead this team to a winning season.  Stafford can become a great QB but he needs time to learn from you.  Step it up and be that guy.  Like you said before, "some QB's are Tom Brady"...except you could be even better than Brady.  I look forward to seeing you on the field again!

  • Nice job out there Drew. Yeah you threw two picks, but you haven't had much time on the field. I hope that you can start in a few weeks and show the world what you've got. From the glimpse I've seen, you have a lot of potential. You look a lot more confident out there and are seeing the field a lot better. Keep your head up; the picks are due to inexperience (hey, Stafford has thrown an abundance already). You lead the Lions down the field twice in such a way that Culpepper could not. Your worth to the Lions is a lot greater than they know. Good luck, I hope to see you as starting QB in a few weeks!
