Thousands of Jews were assimilated out of their Judaism and into Christianity as a result of the 600 years of persecution from the Catholic Inquisition. These Jews are known as the Anusim (Hebrew word for someone forced against his/her will), and they are also known as Marranos (literally "Swines" in Spanish) or Conversos ("Converts to Christianity"). Many of them continued to practice Judaism in secret, hence the name "Crypto Jews", at great peril to their lives. After hundreds of years, the descendants of those assimilated Jews are finally tracing their roots back to the Judaism that their ancestors were deprived of.
