Coach Deserves More Respect

By Drew Stanton

December 22, 2008

A couple of weeks ago, Coach Marinelli put a team picture up in a meeting that was taken from earlier this year.  He went on to explain how he did not want to see this hanging in the Hall of Fame as the first 0-16 team in history.

Well, history is looking us right in the face and we only have one more game to alter that.  There have been 1-15 teams before, and they become after thoughts quickly, but 0-16 would live on forever.  Heck, look at Miami now, they were 1-15 last year, got the right people in place and have won 10 games in 2008.

This year has been extremely difficult on everyone involved, but especially Coach Marinelli, I think that is rather apparent.  I have been thoroughly impressed with the dignity and class with which Rod has carried himself in every situation.  He is a tremendous person who cares about his players, and I still believe in his philosophies and how he coaches.

Coach Marinelli deserves more respect from reporters than he received from Rob Parker yesterday.  His failed attempt at humor after belittling Coach Marinelli and his son-in-law showed the ugliness of his profession, and the fact he believes there are no boundaries.  His job is to report the news and ask questions that could provide insight.  People could see last night on national television after Parker’s third attempt (as Rod has done all year) that he was not going to budge or throw anyone under the bus, regardless of whether that person is his son-in-law or not.

The rollercoaster season only has one more loop to make before the ride ends, but everyone in the organization must do everything within its power to make sure we get Jason Hanson his first win ever in Green Bay

I want to wish everyone a happy holidays and a great new year!

  • Respect or not - GOODBYE ROD!!! Thank goodness this season is over and we don' thave to deal with you anymore. This time next year you'll be wishing someone would be cracking jokes on your coaching choices - because unless the Browns or Bengals want you , I just don't see you in the NFL. Best wishes Drew, sorry the season went the way it did. The players played hard, but was let down several times by the coaching mistakes that were made. It's all about the offseason now, hope that we see you in a Lions jersey next year!

  • I agree 100%.... HUGE fan of yours here from East Lansing.... we been rooting, praying and hoping that you get the chance to show this organization what you can do, what kind of attitude you can set for you team. I only wish you came sooner to the lions drew, because i feel if you were there from day 1 with Rod we would be a much better team. I can understand why you still respect Rod so much when the mass media is telling us that he is basically the master planner behind are 0-15 season.... Rod wants tough players, who care more about the fellowship of playing with your teamates, looking the other 62 guys around you square in the eyes and saying I will lay my body, heart and soul out on the field to win for this team, because i can trust that you can do the same. I may get laughed at when i say the lions aren't that far off, but with a few more pieces in place on Defense like Ernie Sims and i feel this team would go far, its about getting those kind of players that you and a few others on the team already are and letting them loose on the field. BTW If your ever come back near campus, EVERYONE i work with at Big Johns Steak and Onion look up to you, and hope the best for you, come in and grab some free food if your ever around!

  • I say it week in and week out - this type of class will help you become a starter in the NFL. As much as I've disagreed with the coaching this year, I do respect a man that is willing to go down with his ship and defends the way he does things. Rod's said all year that he believes in the team, what the team is doing and the way he is approaching things. He could of tapped out earlier in the season, but chose to ride the storm out, regardless of what the outcome would be.
Green Bay will be a tough team. I heard you weren't starting, which is unfortunate, but I hope that the Lions do get their first win Sunday. It'll be a good game and I know that not one player on the team wants to go down as THAT TEAM that went 0-16.
Hey, if Miami can do it, WE CAN DO IT!! Ha
    Happy Holidays Brother! Jason
